Say, Mean, Matter Forum

Post here each week about contemporary issues that intrigue you. Follow the close reading strategy of 1. What does the text say? 2. What does the text mean? 3. Why does the text matter?
PDF of SMM Explanation

First Say, Mean, Matter Post

8/20/2013

Say, Mean, Matter Discussion Forum—You will contribute one Say, Mean, Matter post online each week. You may choose the content of your post. Consider the following possibilities:

a.     Important newspaper articles, which you can find online or in a print newspaper

b.     Textual quotes from the literature you are reading

c.     Any contemporary issue that intrigues you

You will then analyze the content in terms of “What does it (whatever you chose) SAY?” This is a summary, so put the content into your own words.

The next section will be titled, “What does it MEAN?” This is an interpretation. This is where you determine what the content means. This is YOUR interpretation based on your background knowledge and your knowledge of the subject matter, etc.

The final section is the “What does it MATTER?” This is the implication piece. What are the possible outcomes? How will this content impact you, the community, the nation, the world? See columns below. There will be a sample SAY, MEAN, MATTER post online for you to consider while you compose your own. Your SMM post is due online each Friday at midnight.

Please use your first name and last initial and YOUR CLASS PERIOD. You will NOT receive credit if there is no class period listed.

Gregory Boyle, in TATTOOS ON THE HEART, wrote, "You stand with the belligerent, the surly, and the badly behaved until bad behavior is recognized for the language it is: the vocabulary of the deeply wounded and of those whose burdens are more than they can bear"(179). (This is cited in MLA format.)

Say:

This says that bad behavior is a way of communicating one's pain and that standing with the badly behaved is necessary until the pain is revealed and understood.

Mean:

My interpretation of this passage is that it means that when people act out and misbehave that they are doing so because they are in tremendous pain. Either they've been neglected and their own needs are not being met, or they have been abused or hurt in some way, or perhaps they've suffered a loss that is too big for them to bear. Instead of using their words about how much pain they're in, they act out by doing things that are inappropriate and often illegal (This is a book about gangs.)

Matter:

This passage matters because it offers an explanation for bad behavior and challenges us to see beyond the behavior to the heart of the matter. If we can do that, then we may feel more empathy, and as a result, be able to stick it out with those who are acting badly rather than quickly dismiss, judge and abandon them.

The author of "Wired for Story" states, “so it’s no surprise that we tend to be utterly oblivious to the fact that beneath every captivating story, there is an intricate mesh of interconnected elements holding it together, allowing it to build with seemingly effortless precision. This often fools us into thinking we know exactly what has us hooked---things like beautiful metaphors, authentic sounding dialogue, an interesting character---when, in fact, despite how engaging those things appears to be in and of themselves, it turns out they’re secondary. What has us hooked is something else altogether, something that underlies them, secretly bringing them to life: story, as our brain understands it.”

Say:

It says that people have wrong idea on what elements of a story attracts them. Readers forget that the story itself is the hook, but believe that the descriptive language is what bring them to read.

Mean:

It means that the most important part of a story is story itself, but not the fancy language it has. People usually think the skill to express the story is more important than the content of the story, and this idea is not right.

Matter:
This statement matters because it explains a common error made by both writers and readers when dealing with stories. The statement tells that if a story can make readers understand it, then it is excellent on expressing, even though it contain little beautiful descriptions or words decorations. For me and many others, we miss the main part of writing---making sense, but to chase the outside appearance of writing, so I think this passage matters a lot to me.

A passage I liked in " Wired for story" is, "story is what makes us human, not metaphorically but literally."

Say:
Basically this quote says that stories are what makes us who we are now.

Mean:
I think it means that because of stories we become who we are. Our brain responds to stories, we have pleasure in it. Which is a normal way for us to pay attention

Matter:
If stories impact humans as much as this quote says then we should be able to do more of telling and reading in our lives.

Martin Luther King's real message
By Jonah Goldberg
Say:"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character"- Martin Luther King He hopes that one day his children will live in a nation that will not be judged by their skin color but by their character.

Mean: I think this mean King would hope that every individual would not be judged but be appreciated. They would not be judged by the color of their skin.

Matter: this quote matters because if King did not say the speeches that he said then it would not have been put in consideration. Possibly there still might be slaves today and there still might have discrimination in America today.

Biden: No doubt Syrian regime used chem weapons
http://news.msn.com/staging/biden-no-doubt-syrian-regime-used-chem-weapons
Say: This article states that Biden has confirmed that chemical weapons have been used by the Assad regime in Syria. It alludes to the fact that chemical weapons are illegal internationally and is considered especially heinous.
Mean: This is important because a high-ranking official making these claims is to be believed. Before there had been doubts, but it is dispelled by these events. This speaks about the central role politicians may play in wider politics.
Matter: For one this matters to the U.S. as a political body as new affirmation may change the course of future policy. In addition this revelation changes the view of the Assad regime on the international scene. More to the point of the story, this article is hinting that the Syrian case is so occluded that a recognizable figure is needed to clear up any doubts.

Lisa Cron, in Wired for Story, wrote, " When a story enthrall us, we are inside of it, feeling what the protagonist feels, experiencing as if it were indeed happening to us." (4) (This is cited in MLA format).

Say:
When we are focused or fascinated by a book, the readers or audience can experience what the protagonist feels.

Mean:
We are able to visualize and feel what the protagonist is experiencing. We can also sense the point of view of the author. We can truly understand what the author or protagonist is doing. The readers or audience are so fascinated by the book, they are able to connect with it so deeply, they can experience what the protagonist is encountering.

Matter:
This can actually prove the author that we (audience/readers) understand the story and more importantly, the understanding of the author's intention towards the book and audience.

Daniel Born, in " The Joy of Reading" wrote "print culture affords irreplaceable forms of focused attention and contemplation that make complex communications and insights possible.

Say: Basically what this quote is saying is that books are an irreplaceable form of learning, in which you can being focus, pay attention, and delight the complex of the story.

Mean: It's mean that print culture(books) are the basic of a well-educated life.

Matter: It's matter because if youth gather to read more books instead of doing different types of activities such as watch tv, they would be more focused at school, and have a better communication within their communities, and should interpret what's around them with a different point of view.

Lisa Cron, in WIRED FOR STORIES, wrote "...unless that story meets their hardwired expectation, it stays on the shelf" (5).

Say:
This means that unless the book is able to capture the reader's attention, the book will not appear interesting.

Means:
A book needs to actually snag the attention of the brain or it'll simply go unread. The Brain needs to enjoy and understand the story. Even though there is passion in each story, they have the fire in the story, they usually do not possess that framework to ignite that fire.

Matter:
This passage matters because it means that even though you might like a story, someone else might not because we all have our own personal taste when it comes to book. In addition, this proves why some shows - those shows that are usually filled with gossip, or those comic books - are more popular than others.

Daniel Born, in "The Joy of Reading", wrote," In other words, if you don't want Dr. Strangelove or Big Brother in the future, you could, at the very least, help kids appreciate Hansel and Gretel" (1).

Say:
Literacy and book reading are so important, it could also be seen as a factor in stopping the rise of dictatorships.

Mean:
Literacy and book reading are essential skills/hobbies to have.

Matter:
As technology improves and more and more people become attached to electronics, they are ignoring the importance of reading. Reading is an important aspect of life, as much as literacy. Born concludes that reading/literacy prevents Authoritarianism, stating "the link between reading and democratic participation is clear".

Daniel Born, in THE JOY OF READING, wrote, "Less reading overall lowers our collective IQ. There are now more literate speakers and writers of English in India than in the United States."

Say:
Because there are less and less amount of people in the wrold reading, it literally lowers the standard IQ of an individual. Also, India beats the United States in the English field. There are more literate speakers and writers in India than United States.

Mean:
The story means to me, that areading is an important factor in everyone's life. Reading is an overall essential for survival.

Matter:
Imagine living in a world without being able to read. Reading is very important because it's a tool for us to read and write.

From "The Joy of Reading"
"The survey showed that serious readers watch almost as much television-- about 3 hours a day-- as nonreaders."

SAY:

The quote says that people watch as much TV whether they read or not.

"Reading Matters" by Chris Dodge
"Reading these books, and others through the years, change my life." (page 79)

Say:
Reading is where we started to connect from peoples. Books could connect about our personal life.

Mean:
Books have different stories it sometimes have similar stories about our personal life. Reading book is exercise our brains. Reading improves concentration. Reading strengthens brain connections and actually builds new connections. Reading helps develop empathy. Reading relaxes the body and calms the mind. Books are the first entertainment. We educate through books.

Matter:
Without reading we might don't know how to follow instructions, can't any job since reading is the important thing in life. Reading is use everywhere you go in streets, directions how to go here and there, malls directions. Without reading we can't learn and explore things.

Daniel Born, in "The Joy of Reading", wrote,"one's brain is not similarily massaged by trawling for web site residue, a habit familiar to the millions of Americans living in cubicle-land."

Say:
We as students and or adults take advantage of technology, therefore we do not use the textbook that is provided to us in courses taken throughout highschool and college.

Mean:
Education throughout all ages, children and adults are both cheating their ways through to success since we are using technology more than actual textbooks. all our generation does when we are assigned research assignments or any other project would be to go home or to the library and search it up on google, copy, paste, and print it out, then turn in in for a grade to the professor or teacher. we are cheating ourselves from learning new material.

Matter:
As technology improves and more and more people become attached to electronics, they are ignoring the importance of reading. Reading is an important aspect of life, as much as literacy. we are taking education for granted and the next generation would be the ones who suffer from our mistakes and they are the ones who keep on carrying the burdens.

In the article, " The Joy of Reading" by Daniel B, he mentioned about " less reading overall lowers our collective IQ" . (87).

Say :
This quote stated that less reading lower your IQ, so you need to read . Simple as that. It doesn't matter what you read, as long as you read on the daily, it already is going to improve your IQ. You can start reading what most interest you, such as magazines, comic books or even school newspapers.

Mean:
What this quote mean is that it is important to read because then you will increase your IQ. I personally think that reading is important because I know that it will lead me to success, hearing from my parents always encourage me to read . Not only that, I read magazines, such as the "Vogue" , because fashion and make up is interesting for me to read. I've also seen my upperclass friends, who are already in college, that by reading, you gain knowledge, and most of them went to a good school all because of their interest in reading. Therefore, I want to go into a good college so I can make my parents proud.

Matter :
This quote matters to me because it has made me realize how important reading is. It determined our road to success. Reading helps me in life because not only I gain knowledge, but also I work on imagination and creativity in my mind. I also develop a better understanding and a deep connection in what I'm reading. The more I read, the better I do in life. Being confident, not clueless in what I'm reading, having a successful future, and with a high IQ, it takes a bigger chance for me entering to the college of my dream.

๐ Say :
This says that story-telling bring us together to share the thoughts and ideas. Some details in the story is very interesting that we must hear it once in a lifetime.

๐ Mean :
My interpretation of this passage is that it means that story telling used to be a method use for gathering a group of people to share one's experience.

๐ Matter :
This passage matters because story has existed for a very long time. It is one of the first method used to gathered people together. Even though, you don't know each other, when you listen to a story, it is what connected you to the people around you. Sharing information would also fulfill one's thought.

Say:
Computers forms the axis of evil that demolishes literary reading.

Mean:
Technology slowly kills literary reading because as the technology progresses, people tend not to read as much as the newer generations.

Chris Dodge, in Reading Matters wrote, "Writing a book is an act of falling in love with yourself and the audience," critic Leslie Fielder says in the store reader. And so can reading be an act of love."

Says:
It says in the process of writing a book you are not just telling a story, you are spilling out your bleeding heart to the audience.

Mean:
when you are writing a book there is a much stronger connection than just words itself. You have a link between the reader and writer that only you two understand. Its almost like a secret relationship.

Matter:
This passage matters because once you understand the relationship between the reader and writer the story is taken to a whole new level. If you are the reader you need to learn to be involved with the writers thoughts. And if you are the writer you have to captivate the reader's mind.

Chris Dodge, in READING MATTERS, wrote, "Writing a book is an act of falling in love-with yourself and the audience"(80).

Say:
When you are writing a book, you are in love with yourself and the people who are reading your book.

Mean:
When you write a book, you pick the words from the bottom of your heart. While a reader is reading your book, your sincerity will be perceived by him or her. It seems that you and your audience are communicating by words, through heart.

Matter:
A writer's accomplishment is to impress his or her audience by using written words. Through the lifeless words, a writer expresses his or her emotions, feelings, and moods. Although every reader may have a different interpretation on the same words, words are the bridges which link the writer and the readers.

Lisa Cron, Wired for story states " Writers can change the way people think simply by giving them a glimpse of life through their characters' eyes" (2).

Say

The writers are the ones with the power because they can change the way we think by what they wrote from their characters' point of view.

Mean

Writers have the power for all human beings because they give people insight on how to think on different things in life, through the stories they have written.

Matter

Writers are important because they keep an influence on society, to every kind of person there is a kind of book that interests them. Writers provide a place for people to escape and dream in. Writers provide a glimpse of life to people who don't experience much in life or didn't experience what was happening in the book. Writers teach us, it's like having a intellectual teacher, and soon we become wiser people.

Lisa Cron, in “Wired for Story”, wrote, “Story is what enabled us to imagine what might happen in the future…” (1).

Say:
This quote says that although story is only imagination, it allows us to make predictions about the future.

Mean:
My interpretation of this phrase is that it means that by reading stories, I will be prepared for what will happen in the future. Writers imagine what our world would be like years from now. When they have a solid idea, writers express their ideas onto paper, and the ideas get published. Readers are enthralled by the new idea the author has proposed; therefore, they will view the future as do the author does. All this happens just because a writer had an idea and decided to publish his story.

Matter:
This quote matters because reading will help us plan for the future. If we have an idea of what the future might be, we can strive toward that idea. Because of stories, we will have a greater understanding of the future and how to prepare for it.

"Story is what makes us human, not just metaphorically but literally."

SAY- Books and stories are important factors in making us who we are.
MEAN - Stories are more important than just entertainment; they are necessary parts of life. Because we are hardwired to respond to stories, they are evolutionary principles, key to our well-being.

MATTER- We need stories to teach us the way of the world. Since primitive times, humans have been telling stories. It has been so long that storytelling has been integrated into our society. Authors can take advantage of this by writing with words that stimulate our senses.

Mean
I think it means that Americans are doing more of other activities than reading.

Say:
18-24 year old are more committed to the internet and electronics.

Mean:
They are pretty much saying most 18-24 year old are more committed into their electronics then books. Basically saying 18-24 year old are more distracted with electronics around.

Matter:
- It matters because one day if electronics are gone they are going to have to depend on books more.

"After all, a good story doesn't feel like an illusion. What it feels like is life." From Wired for Story by Lisa Cron.

Say: A good story doesn't just trick us for a little while. It doesn't just show you pictures and words. A good story truly makes us believe that we are the story.

Mean: A good story makes us believe that we aren't just reading a handful of words, causing us to make a few pictures, but that we are physically, emotionally, and utterly living it. That it is us that wields the sword and slays the beast. That we, with a stele, draw healing runes along the length of our arms. That we are defeated but then go and defeat. That we fall completely in love with an angel, that we are betrayed, that we solve unlikely mysteries, let loose of life long magic, and we transform into that magnificent, dark grey wolf. A good story doesn't just show us these things in our minds. They transport us from our homes, our beds, our benches, to a world we can only dream of. A world where we matter and are important. A world where we can truly be anything and everything we've ever wanted.

Matter: This matters for so many people. For some, a book is for enjoyment. For a chance to kill time or to read something new. For others, it is an escape. It is a chance to leave behind that life they have if only for a moment. Stories and books allow some readers a chance at a new life, a way out from whatever problems they have or whatever troubles them. Books let us say what we need to say and let out our anger or sadness through a character's words. They let us be who we truly are without anyone judging us. For a lot of people, stories take us to a place where we can not only escape our haunting troubles, but they take us to somewhere where we matter. We can step in to someone else's shoes and be them for a little while. We can save the day and help in stopping something terrible. We are important in that other world. We aren't just that misunderstood student or that tired parent. We are heroes. We have someone who needs us and relies on us and we can finally feel something good about ourselves. Books and stories connect us all together. They allow us that little bit of freedom to truly be us. We don't have to change our ways or standards or any part of what defines us for anyone. And that, that saves lives. That helps people make it through that tough night where the darkness seems to drag you to insanity. It gives us the strength to go one more day, and then another. That's why it matters. And many people don't see that. But stories really are that anchor that someone may need to keep themselves afloat.

Lisa Cron in WIRED FOR STORIES wrote, "Art is fire plus algebra."

Say:
This quote is the requirement that stories must have in order to be successful.

Mean:
I think that this means that stories need to be written with passion but at the same time contain structure. The two compliment each other, and without one or the other the story would fail.

Matter:
This quote matters because it is a guideline for writers in order to be successful in delivering their stories. Although it applies to writers especially, I think it also holds significance to readers. As readers, we become aware of what our subconscious automatically looks for in a story.

Daniel Born, in "The Joy of Reading" wrote," To lose such capability...would constitute a vast cultural impoverishment" (1).

Say:
Books are very crucial to us. Without books, we lose a connection to other cultures.

Mean:
Books can tell us stories of other cultures and life in the perspective of others. By reading books, we can learn another person's culture and understand their background more.

Matter:
A connection to culture is vital. People are able to understand one another and cooperate on a whole new level. By losing the ability to read books, we are also losing the ability to connect to other people of another culture. The community that I live in isn't really diverse, so I feel like reading about another culture would give me more insight on what is beyond this little bubble that I live in.

"Story originated as method of bringing us together to share specific information that might be lifesaving"

Say: We created storytelling as a way to share information during our evolution.

Mean: I think it means that our brains are hardwired to survival and in order to survive we must know as much information as we can.Which provides an explanation to why some people love books, and can also explain why recent interests in reading books has been lost. Since we now have more effective ways of transmitting information.

Matter: This gives us the ability to become engaged when we hear useful information. It also means if our current way of sharing information (internet, TV) stops. Then we will still have a hardwired set of instincts to pass along information to others.

Lisa Cron, in Wired For Story, wrote "Thus it's no surprise that when given a choice, people prefer fiction to non-fiction" (2).

Say: This quote says that people enjoy reading things that aren't real rather then realistic information because fake material can be much more interesting.

Mean: What i think this quote means is that people enjoy fake stories because they are more interesting and better to read about. Also in fake stories, lessons can be taught in a more interesting way and it's also easier that way. Non-fiction stories don't give enough interest to readers compared to fiction.

Matter: This quote matters because it affects the writers out there. Since most people enjoy reading about fiction rather then non-fiction, then writers will end up writing about fiction and not non-fiction.

Say:
I think this passage is saying that people's brains are not exercised by just looking up answers on the internet which is familiar to us.

Mean:
It means that people need to read and find out answers for themselves instead of just relying on the internet for answers. Nowadays, since internet is accessible to most people, they rather just look things up because it's a faster way to get an answer than reading an entire book or article.

Matter:
It matters because people's brains do not get exercised by staying in a "cubicle", which is a small place because your brain doesn't get the chance to expand. Also, it is important to explore and find things out for yourselves. We must all make time in our daily lives to read because it helps your brain expand and can really change your thoughts and feeling on many issues.

Mean: I believe Cron is trying to say that listening, interpreting, and telling stories is what separates us from all other living things on the planet; with stories, we are human.

Matter: Due to decline in reading nowadays, we have lost some touch with our inner "humanness." Story plays an important part in our minds. Being able to process stories has made us "superior" to other living creatures, so we should continue reading if we do not want to become animals.

Matter:
If serious readers watch as much as non readers, than we should try to limit their hours of television. "Wired for Story" by Lisa Cron wrote,"Story originated as a method of bringing us together to share specific information that might be lifesaving."

Say:
Story began as an process of sharing certain types of information that can be important.

Mean:
My interpretation of this passage is that stories are significant to our daily lives because of how it has the power to change a person's life. Writers have the ability to inspire their audience with their written words and it's true how they can save a life. A person can be feeling extremely down, but a good book can help cure their sadness. Stories also bring people together, whether it's written or verbal, people end up growing healthier and stronger relationships.

Matter:
It matters because stories are somehow becoming less important and life changing. Nowadays, most people read about famous people and their daily lives. Because of the media and the constant status updates of Facebook, Twitter, and other websites, the stories seem more uninspiring. It's true that someone can write something inspiring on these websites but the majority of what's written isn't. It also drives people away from genuinely inspiring books with amazing stories that should be read. People are beginning to choose status updates over a good book.

This passage matters because computers are obviously a big threat to literary reading. Due to the prevalence of computers, many people now find leisure in surfing the web rather than reading books. If this trend were to continue then soon, books will be completely abandoned. However, many companies are trying to combat this deviation from reading by providing computer users access to online books and other literary resources. Reading is something society cannot afford to lose.

The government could pass laws that could affect their wages, their health, their education, or their future generations, and these people would be clueless. They would be taken advantage of in their life.

Matter:
From where did our Founding Fathers get the ideas of how the American government should be like? It was through the reading of the Enlightenment thinkers' writings, such as Locke's and Montesquieu's, and other philosophers that they got all these ideas from. One thing that all these people have in common is that they all read. They read, and then began to question the authority of their rulers, "Why are they the ones ruling us? What give them the right to govern us?" Then they started to shape their own thinking of the best of government, human's rights, human's nature, and laws. If they do not read, how would they know? Where would they get the ideas from? These people were influenced by others , and soon, they influenced us. If we do not read, we will be oblivious to what is going on, and will simply follow acquiescently to the people and the laws. The power of reading influences our values and our choices in life.

Daniel Born, in “The Joy of Reading”, wrote, “…getting books into the hands of the young, and helping them learn to love these books has strategic importance” (87).

Say:

This quote is saying that it is vital for young adults, teenagers, and children to learn to appreciate books and reading altogether so that they can read for pleasure and not because they have to. This is a “strategic importance”, because through reading, they learn about people, places, and events that are completely outside of their own experience.

Mean:

I think this quote means that it is crucial for the youth in this generation to realize that reading should still be an important must in everyday life. This is because not only does it improve concentration, and build vocabulary, it also exercises the brain. Reading can relax you and relieves one of stress; these days it seems as if people have completely forgotten to simply calm down, and take a break from their surroundings, and simply be silent.

Matter:

Reading matters, because it is proven that less of it lowers a person’s collective IQ. The article also states that India has more literate speakers and writers of the English language compared to the United States. The percentage of illiterate adults is drastically rising, and technology seems to be taking over as the new form of entertainment. My interpretation of this sentence is that it means that if you want to do something, then do it. You will regret later that you did not do it when you had the chance to. In the long run, you will wish that you had done it, but it will be too late.

Mean:I think it means that missing someone will bring hope right back to you.
Matter:This is important, most of the people doesn't like long distance relationship, because they think the person you love or like would be better standing next to you. This quote just simply justify the meaning of truth love no matter where you are.

In "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card he states: " Human beings are free except when humanity needs them. Maybe humanity needs you. To do something. Maybe humanity needs me --- to find out what you're good for. We might both do despicable things, Ender, but if humankind survives, then we were good tools."

Say:

It shows Graff explaining to Ender the story behind everything they are doing.

Mean:

My interpretation of the passage is Graff teaching Ender about whats going on. He explains the roles he could contribute to this world. Graff also explains that maybe the world needs Ender to help or do something. If Graff convinces Ender, and humankind survives, then both were good tools and assests to saving the world.

Matter:

It matters because Ender could be something useful for the world. He could help others defeat and relinquish whats happening. This is where his thought lies on humankind. To help save the world or not.

Say: We need to focus on what interests the kids of today

Mean: If today's youth aren't motivated and engaged then we will lose more students in the education system then will "save."

Matter: This matters because as the rest of the world around us is evolving, but for the most part the education system has remained the same. More students are dropping out of school, and doing poorly or struggling. The same methods of teaching aren't working anymore. The curriculum has to change as well as the teaching methods.

"Expectation is the root of all heartache." - William Shakespeare

Say: When you expect something to come or to happen and it doesn't happen you are going to hurt even more.

Mean:The more we compare our lives to others and look outside of ourselves for happiness the more we will become unhappy.

Matter: It is true that happiness starts from within ourselves. It doesn't depend what happens on the outside, everything starts within. If we look outside ourselves, we will never be happy, never satiated. We will continue to covet things, find flaws about ourselves, and compare ourselves. Our expectations are sometimes so far- fetched that they rarely come true, and when they don't we end up disappointed.

Say: This incident happen in 1958 where a nine year old boy was kissed on the cheek by a little white girl. The boy was strongly prosecuted for an act he didn't even do and was going to serve 14 years in prison as a boy.

Mean: This shows you the hostility of white people towards people that were a different color not too long ago. Also different colored people would never be able to marry each other.

Matter: Even though it seemed like black people and white people would always be separated. Now 55 years later every kind of male and female are able to marry each other.

SAY:App turns iPhone and iPad into security camera, motion detector (LA Times)

Ever wanted to know what your dog was doing all day without having to set up a complicated video camera system? People Power, a Palo Alto software company, has released a mobile app that can easily turn an old iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch into a security camera. The company's free app, Presence, makes it possible for users who have Wi-Fi to set up one Apple device as a video camera and another as a monitor. For instance, a dog owner could take an old iPhone, turn it into a camera and then watch the pooch on an iPad at work."We are breathing new life into [old devices] by turning them into a free Wi-Fi video camera," People Power CEO Gene Wang told The Times on Thursday.Wang said Presence is an app perfect for users who may want to watch their pets while they're out, watch their kids from another room or connect with elderly people who stay at home."A lot of people have told me that they would use this to yell at their pets -- for example, if their dog gets in the trash," said David Moss, People Power's chief technology officer. The app can also come in handy if someone breaks into your home.Users can program Presence to record a five-second video clip when motion is detected and send them an email alert. Homeowners can set multiple Apple devices to detect motion.
Wang, for example, said he used the motion-detector feature to figure out when his daughter really came home one night. He said he set up his old iPad 2 in his home's hallway before going to sleep at midnight and woke up the next morning to an email that said motion was detected around 2:30 a.m."I asked her what time she got home and she said 1:30 a.m., and I'm thinking to myself 'No, she didn't,' " Wang said, laughing. There is no limit to the number of devices that can be turned into cameras or monitors, although each device has to have the app and the device with the camera has to have the app turned on.The company recommends connecting the devices to their wall chargers so that they don't run out of power and stop streaming, but Moss said using old devices as plugged-in security cameras won't run up users' electric bills. At most, he said, users can expect to pay an extra dollar if they use their devices this way for an entire year."We really are creating this disruptive app that really creates an inexpensive security system," Wang said. The app is free, but People Power is hoping that users will go to the app's "Market" and purchase accessories, such as device tripods and fish-eye lenses, to enhance their security system. Presence is available now from the Apple App Store, and People Power said it hopes to release an Android version of the app later this year.

MEAN: This means that any old idevice can be used as your own personal security camrea when you download their app. The app is free and many people say that it works. It also has many features such as motion detection and record time.

MATTER: This matter because it gives the public an inexpensive way to watch their pets or secure their house with a free security camera. Any idevice can be turned into a security camrea that can be moved easly to any part of the house.

Mean: This means we should tell the truth of what we did wrong. If we tell the truth sooner, then we may not be given the full punishment. If we lie about it, we will just make it worse and it is not good for both parties.

Matter: This matters because being truthful is a very important characteristic. It is something that employers and colleges are looking for in a person. It best not to lie about anything.

Say: This says that family and friends are the most important things in life. The important of the love from family and friends are more valuable than wealth which is money and privilege which is power.

Mean:This means that family and friends are the most important part in a person's life. The love and admiration from family and friends will have more meaning than money and power because with love and admiration you will have everything that makes a person a real happy person, but with only wealth and privilege you will not have love and friends that will make you became happy.

Matter: This matters because it teach people a lesson about life. It tell people that money and power will not became the most important things in life for people because there was things (family and friends) that was more valuable. "A true friend is someone who thinks that you are a good egg even though he knows that you are slightly cracked." - Bernard Meltzer

Mean: True friends are very rare and they don't try to get you in trouble just for the fun of it. They will play with you, and not against you. They will laugh with you, and not at you. They will do things that will help you in life and not make it harder for you.

Matter: It matters because we all want true friends in our lives to support us. It is very important to determine who is true and who is a fake. They may be your best friend in the whole world, then they betray you in the next minute. "Even if i knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree"- Martin Luther

Say: Against all odds, a person should always be optimistic.

Mean: This inspirational quote elaborates on the fact that a lot of people give up if they believe a task is too difficult to accomplish. However, the sense of optimism that is clearly illuminated in this quote shines the light on an entirely new concept- trying even though you know you are going to fail. As a matter of fact, most of the time people assume they are going to fail, which is why they come short to being amazing.

Matter:
People should always be optimistic even if the situation does not seem to require optimism. Optimism is crucial for genuine happiness. In such a fast pace world like ours, sometimes we allow for the stress to devour us whole. It is a magnificent way to maintain one's sanity.

But we can try our best to achieve what we set our minds to because once you set that goal only you can stop yourself.

Matter: This idea matters because we must understand that we have limits, and it is impossible to be in one hundred places at once. For example Hitler did set his mind to the extermination of the Jew's (he believe he could do this with the mind set of anything is possible). But since not everyone in the world had the same opinion as him he was eventually stopped because in our world not everything is possible.

Mean: This quote means, to heat people is a thing sometimes count as immature, like the quote said, every one has something good about them and also bad about them, the same to you.

Matter:Don't alway complaining on some one, or hate someone so easyliy, because it's tough to forgrt this feeling. Heat is a sence of anger, and anger always mess up with people's life. why people hate?not love? we should be nice to every one who show up in your life, we can sit down tallk about the problems when you have it, we can try to give up people when you try to hate people. “Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.” – Confucius

Say: Everyone is beautiful, it just takes the right person to see it.

Mean: Not everyone will see you in the same way, just as not everyone will treat you the same way. Some people might hate you while others love you. But no matter what, you always have some beauty within you. Something about you that makes you special.

Matter: This matters because we need to know that not everyone will like us but we will always have something that makes us unique. We need to know that we aren't alone and that someone will be there for us. We just need to let them instead of convincing ourselves that we have nothing good and that we could never be loved. Matter: By increasing the minimum wage business will raise the price of their products to make the same amount of profit they are now.
