Introduce your literature circle book and the author. Then describe one character who plays the role of "protector."

Address the following questions:

1. How is the protector tender toward the weaknesses in the other characters?

2. How is the protector tender toward his/her own weakness?

3. How does the protector PROTECT? State at least two examples that you've read about so far?

Remember to put your first name and the first initial of your last name. Also, DON'T FORGET to put your class period.

I'm reading The Catcher In The Rye and I thought that Old Spencer was the protector.

1. Holden was a very lazy person who's always failing. Old Spencer decided to boost him up by talking to him alone.

2. Old Spencer is old so that was one of his weakness. He can't help and persuade Holden as much as he can. He can barely move!

3. He tried protecting Holden's grade by talking to him. Also, he didn't let Holden give up. He asked why, what's happening. He was one of the caring teacher.

My literature circle book is "The Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger. The person who plays the protector is Mr. Spencer, Holden's history teacher at Pencey Prep.

1. Mr. Spencer is willing to take the time to ask Holden to go over to his house to talk to him about school.

2. Mr. Spencer tries to do his best for things.

3. Mr. Spencer took the time to invite Holden over to talk to him about school. He tried to get Holden to get back on track to do better for his future. Mr. Spencer also gave him a lecture on how he should do things by the rules.

Wow, I believe that Mr. Spencer is the protector of this book as well! He will probably help Holden succeed in life and is the only person that truly cares for him.

"Sold" is a novel by Patricia McCormick, published in 2006. The narrator of this story is Lakshmi who is a Nepali girl from a poor family. The book depicts the adventure of Lakshmi when she is sold into sexual slavery in India.

One of the protector of the novel is the American Customer #1. Unlike other customers who treat Lakshmi as a sexual slave, he pays Lakshmi without sleeping with her. Instead, he talks with her and tries to see if she wants to leave the Happiness House. When Lakshmi shuns him and responds nothing, the American Customer gives her a card which is the contact information.

I am reading Catcher in the rye by J.D Salinger. I think the protector is Mr.Spencer.

1. He shows concern for Holden and his future. He puts his feelings of importance and helps him.

2. He uses his life stories to help Holden so he doesn't make the same mistakes.

3.He offered Holden hot chocolate and tells him good luck! He warns Holden to start caring about his future, he shows concern for him.

'The Help' was written by Kathryn Stockett who was very close to an African-American domestic worker. The Help is a book about two colored maids who worked for white families and tried to express the racism they experienced with the help of Ms. Skeeter. Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan is a protector in the story.

1. Ms. Skeeter, though is a white daughter, she cares for her maids and disagree with all the racism issues.

2. Ms. Skeeter has her own problem. She wants to be a writer but her mother want her to get married. She applies for the job and gets to be a writer.

3. - Ms. Skeeter does not promote the restroom issue for Ms. Hilly on the Club newspaper.
- Ms. Skeeter tries to find out about Constantine ,her maid who got fired a long time ago. She saw Constantine as a family, as a person who raised her up, and as a person she can trust. She does not care about the different in races.

My literature circle book is Sold by Patricia McCormick. This book is a story about a girl named Lakshmi who is trafficked into a brothel and forced to perform sexual favors in order to earn her way out. The character that I choose for the role of the protector is Shahanna. Shahanna is another girl who lives in the brothel (Happiness House) and helps Lakshmi cope with her surroundings.

1. When Lakshmi was new to the Happiness House, Shahanna showed empathy, guided Lakshmi, and explained the rules and order. She knew that Lakshmi was afraid and helped her cope with the environment.

2. Shahanna is tender toward her own weakness in that she obeys Mumtaz and turns a blind eye to the evils that happen to her.

3. Shahanna protects Lakshmi by giving her water when Lakshmi was locked in the room by herself to starve. Shahanna prevented Lakshmi from getting beaten by Mumtaz by instructing her how to handle customers.

From the way you described Shahanna, she seems like a very compassionate girl. I'm glad there is someone like Shahanna to protect Lakshmi from the horrors of her situation in the brothel. This book reminds me of a Chinese drama series that I watched a few years ago. The main character had a similar situation to Lakshmi, and the main character was protected by an "older" sister in the brothel. The older sister's goal was to give the main character everything the older sister did not have so that the main character's life was better than the older sisters'. The older sister was the protagonists' protector just like how Shahanna is Lakshmi's protector.

Unlike Lewen I don't have a personal anecdote about this subject, but human trafficking is also of concern to me. It interests me how even in the thick of things there are people who care enough to protect others. I think this is a venerable tale of humanity and dignity. Surely those fallen victim to this have more to say and sacrifice than we do.

Yeah.

Do we have to do this? Its not in the post. >_>

I really love that Lakshmi has a protector. Her situation is extremely horrific, and having a protector makes it an innumerable amount of times better. This reminds me of the film Taken because I always think back to the daughter being kidnapped for sex trafficking. She did not have someone to care for her, and she easily could have been murdered. Lakshmi is very lucky to have Shahanna, and Lakshmi is forever indebted to her.

In "China Boy" by Gus Lee, Kai is constantly bullied by the tougher kids in his neighborhood. He joins the Y.M.C.A. where he is mentored by Mr. Barraza, a former professional boxer.
1. Mr. Barraza does not alienate Kai even though Kai is horrible at boxing. Instead, he focuses Kai on a program that will help him protect himself from the other kids and that will help him get stronger.
2. Mr. Barrraza is haunted by his past, where his promiscuity made his wife leave with their son. He misses his son, which causes him to care for the other boys in the Y.M.C.A. He knows that he will probably never see his son again, but he does not give up.
3. He gives Kai free food from the Y.M.C.A cafeteria in order to get stronger. He also tends to Kai's wounds, which happens very often since Kai is always getting beaten by the other kids.

Just by reading this, i am interested in reading this book already! i feel sad that the young generation have to go through the bullying when they suppose to live happily young. I believe that Mr. Barraza is a great influence to Kai, because he tried helping Kai every step of the way. Starting from improving his boxing skills patiently, to even see him and take care of him as his own son. His kindness will pay off by God. His generosity help change people's life, in specifically, Kai. I feel a warmth in my heart just by reading about this quick summary of this book, and can't wait to read it when i have the spare time doing so. Not only that Kai will change his life for the better, but he will help others that are going through the same thing he went through, when he grows old. He will be a role model to the younger generation, and teach them not to bully and learn self defense to the one that has to go through it.

I am reading Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. Valentine Wiggin is the epitome of a protector because all she wants to do is protect Ender Wiggin from their brother, Peter Wiggin. Valentine is Ender’s older sister and Peter’s younger sister. She has much of Ender’s compassion, but she is not ruthless like Peter.

1. Valentine is Ender’s protector. She never ceases to believe that Ender is the best of the Wiggin family. Valentine understands that Peter is ruthless and manipulative. When Ender was still living with his family, Valentine would protect Ender from Peter’s aggressive threats and attacks. Now that Ender is at Battle School, Valentine becomes Peter’s partner which shows that she overlooks their differences and attempts to make their relationship stronger.

2. Valentine works with Peter to transform the political system on earth by using her pseudonym Demosthenes. She does not want to manipulate people like how Peter creates fear in people. She knows that she is intelligent enough to make an impact without being too controlling. However, Valentine falls prey to the irresistible urge to power even though she would never wish to do damage in her attempt to change the world.

3. Valentine protects Ender no matter what; she loves Ender unconditionally. For example, when Ender took off his monitor, Peter was taunting Ender for not being good enough to attend Battle School. Valentine maintains by Ender’s side to comfort him while Peter throws hurtful words at them. Another instance of how Valentine is a protector is when she still celebrates Ender’s birthday even though her whole family gave up on Ender’s return to earth. Through Valentine, the memory of Ender is still alive on earth, and she is still hopeful that Ender will do great things.

The book I am reading now is THE HELP by Kathryn Stockett. One character who plays the role of "protector" is Ms. Skeeter.

1. Ms. Skeeter is white and unlike her other white friends Ms. Leefolt and Ms. Hilly, Ms. Skeeter has respect and compassion for the help. While her friends are trying to get all white families to build separate bathrooms for black employees, Ms. Skeeter goes behind their backs and writes a book containing stories of black women working for white families.

2. Writing this book is a huge risk for Ms. Skeeter. She would become a social outcast if her friends found out. Ms. Skeeter chooses to write about the lives of black maids because of her lost friend and maid Constantine.

3. After talking Ms. Hilly to getting separate bathrooms for black maids, Ms. Skeeter apologizes to Aibileen afterwards, knowing how disrespectful that talk was. Ms. Skeeter protects the black maids by writing a book revealing black women's lives working for white families.

Wow. Ms. Skeeter seems like a woman out of her time. She would risk her reputation so that the African Americans would get recognition for what they do. She seems like a great protector and a great idealist because during her time, white people didn't really have respect or compasion for African people. Ms. Skeeter probably inspired many people to stand up for what they believe in.

The Help seems like a great book! It definitely sounds like Ms. Skeeter was a protector. It's amazing how she was willing to risk her social standing to help the African Americans earn the respect they deserved. Back then it was so uncommon for whites to be friendly with African Americans because they just used them as maids or servants. It's nice that she has a friendship with her maid Constantine. I definitely want to read this book next :)

I'm reading "The Stranger" by Albert Camus. The book is about this man that gets caught into becoming a muderer for trying to help his friend. The character that portrays the protector is Marie, the mistress of Meursault.

1) Marie tries to help people in trouble or at least feel the need to. She gives Meursault motivation to keep going when he has given up. She sticks by his side even when he doesn't really appreciate it.

2) Marie's weakness is Meursault and she wants to be with him more than anything else. She desires to marry him, but he really doesn't care if they do. She tries to stay by his side in hopes that he
will finally see that she is perfect for him and he will marry her.

3) Marie tries to help this lady that was being abused by Raymond by telling Meursault to call the police, but Meursault didn't like the police. Marie also tried to help Meursault believe that he would get out of jail one day and they would go swimming again.

I am reading Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. One character who plays the role "protector" is Alai. Alai was a member of Ender's launch group and they became best friends.

1. When Ender enters the battle school he is an outcast. No one really accepts him because he is better than the other students. Alai was the first to become friends with Ender and he helps him gain acceptance with other members of the school. Also his friendship with Ender prevents Ender from becoming depressed and instead, more motivated in the battle school.

2. Alai sticks to his values and culture throughout the story and does not change. He is able to be himself unlike other students who forget their values.

3. An example of how Alai protects is how he is on Ender's side and when Ender gets put down by some commanders, Alai is there for him and he believes in him. Another example is how Alai said that he will always be friends with Ender when Ender got moved up a rank.

1. Brian is the third of four children. He cares his family and help with his dad when the family get into trouble because he is the only son in the Wall family.

2. Brian is tender toward her own weakness in that he obeys to his father since he was too young to have position in the family.

3. Examples: Brian stood up for Jeannette when she was being beat, although he was even weaker and younger than Jeannette. and he helps Jeannette defend the siblings from local bullies.

The Cather in the Rye is a 1951 novel by J. D. Salinger. Originally published for adults, it has since become popular with adolescent readers for its themes for teenage angst and alienation. The novel is about a privileged yet troubled teen's take on life as he runs away from school to New York City. The narrator is Holden Caulfield. The events he narrates take place in the few days between the end of the fall school term and Christmas, when Holden is sixteen years old.

Jerome David Salinger was an American writer who won acclaim early in life. Very private for more than a half-century thereon, he last published an original work in 1965 and gave his final interview in 1980.

The protector of the novel is the narrator Holden Caulfield.

1. Holden wants to be the catcher in the rye by protecting children who may fall down the cliff.

2. Although Holden sometimes wants to act like an adult, he is extremely childish according to his behaviors. Since he thinks adults are disgusting, he really wants to to be a kid forever.

3. He wants to protect the kids who are playing in the field and avoid their falling down. He also wants to protect them by wishing them to be kids forever and being childish.

My Literature Circle book is The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak.

One character who plays the role of protector within The Book Thief is Hans Hubermann. Hans Hubermann, perhaps the most striking and clear-cut example of a protector within the book, is a security blanket and role model for Liesel and acts as a foil against the rougher characters of the book. Hans Hubermann is plainly shown to be a protector-type character when he firsts comforts Liesel near the very beginning of the book's events.

1. How is the protector tender toward the weaknesses in the other characters?
Hans Hubermann, unlike his wife Rosa Hubermann, actively comforts and protects Liesel from herself when she has nightmares at night. He does this every night, without regard to himself, no matter how much it inconveniences him. He cares nothing for this fault of hers or for himself and seeks only to make things right in his world.

His one fault might be that he does genuinely care little for his station in life (and his wife's opinions). He is comfortable just playing the piano accordion for money (which his wife finds intolerable). He doesn't have any ambition or drive to elevate himself, but he doesn't mind, himself.

His extremely selfless behavior toward Liesel is just one of the ways he is shown to be compassionate (although it is the main point toward this fact in the story). He also is forgiving when Liesel steals her first book and even trades her new books due to her interest in it. He also is the one who first teaches Liesel to read (yes, which is intricately connected with her theft of the book) which he does night after night with her after she has her nightmares.

THE CATCHER IN THE RYE, by J.D. Salinger, accounts a story of Holden Caulfield, a student who had been dropped out of Pencey Prep during Christmas. In the story, narrator Holden Caulfield describes his relationship with his roommates, Stradlater, and Ackley. Holden leaves school two days early to explore New York before returning home, interacting with teachers, prostitutes, nuns, an old girlfriend, and his sister along the way. He also accounts his interaction with other people in the adult world. Through the story, the author exposes readers to the struggles faced by teenagers in their adolescence and the path of growing up and losing innocence.
In this story, Holden Caulfield can be considered a protector. He acts nice toward others’ weaknesses and becomes empathy of that person. He knows his weaknesses but he was not brave and encourages enough to make same change to his own weaknesses; thus, he chooses to avoid his weaknesses.
In the story, Holden Caulfield is a protector. Holden thought he could protect his brother, Allie, but he could not do anything because he brother died of leukemia. Holden greatly care for his sister Phoebe because he wants to protect Phoebe from the phony adult world.

I am reading Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. One protector in the story is Alai. Alai becomes friends with Ender and becomes the bridge between Ender and the other boys in their group.

1. Alai becomes a good friend of Ender even though he isn't "cool". Alai also helps Ender by shielding him from the bullies in their launch group. Alai also continuously pushes Ender to become a better strategist.

2. Alai knows that Ender is different and knows a lot about the battle room. By becoming friends with Ender, Alai is able to learn from Ender how to become a better soldier.

3. Alai protects Ender on a number of occasions. One example is when Ender is about to hit Alai in the battle room. Instead of taking the hit and getting in a fight, Alai helps Ender gain his balance and then their friendship begins to start. Another example would be when Ender gets transfered to an amry away from all his friends. Alai is there to comfort him and to tell him its ok. He gives Ender a hug and that helps Ender continue on his journey.

2. He uses it as motivation to push himself to the limit and find ways to make up for them.

3. Ender protects his friend Shen from being bullied by Bernard. And also after Ender got promoted and started to teach his old launch groups maneuvers he learned from his army, Ender protected them from the other older boys that didn’t like Ender teaching the Launchies.

In the book "Sold" by Patricia McCormick, one of the protector was Shahanna.

1. One of the main characters, Lakshmi, just arrived in the Happiness House. She was afraid and haven't adapted to the environment. Shahanna, having lived in the house for a very long time, shows Lakshmi around and guides her, offering her advice on all the characters.

2. One of the weakness Shahanna posses is Mumtaz. Although Shahanna knows a lot about Mumtaz, she is still under her authority. Shahanna still has no independence she can call hers.

3. One way Shahanna protects Lakshmi is that she was the first to offer water to Lakshmi after a few days. Another way shahanna protects Lakshmi is that she advices her around the house, advices her on the way she can survive , on how to get customers, on how to get the best tips. She tells her about the Americans who often come, and who the polices are, etc.

My literature circle book that I'm reading is "Sold" by Patricia McCormick. I believe the protector in the story is a character named Shahanna.

1. Shahanna is tender toward the character Lakshmi by catering to her weaknesses such as Lakshmi being fairly new to the "happiness house," and by giving her advice on the does and don'ts of the house.

2.Shahanna also sees her own weakness by realizing there is no way out of the happiness house for her. Therefore, she is complacent and compliant to the owner of the house, Mumtaz's, authority.

3. Shahanna protects the main character Lakshmi during her captivity in the happiness house by teaching her how to conduct herself while she is there. In addition to helping Lakshmi adjust to the happiness house she also warns her about the dangers of Americans and how they can earn her a spot of humiliation with Mumtaz's goondas.

1. How is the protector tender toward the weaknesses in the other characters?
The protectors for "Sold" in this section were Shahanna and the little tea boy who brings tea to the Happiness House every day. Shahanna and the little tea boy were more benevolent to Lakshmi than the others because they all provided her information, care, and comfort in what she has to call a "home".

2. How is the protector tender toward his/her own weakness?
Shahanna understands that her debt to Mumtaz won't be paid until many more years, yet she acts like everything is okay. Her weakness is that, like all the other girls, Mumtaz is in charge of the girls in the house and regulates their money, so no matter how much Shahanna would like to help others like Lakshmi, she needs to focus on herself if she wants to get out of the Happiness House anytime soon. In addition, the little tea boy gives Lakshmi free tea even though he knows his boss counts every tea and every change given back so he takes the beating when he is missing some change.

3. How does the protector PROTECT? State at least two examples that you've read about so far?
Whenever Lakshmi was questioning something, Shahanna was always there to help answer Lakshmi's questions. Shahanna also keeps all of Lakshmi's secrets and guides Lakshmi a way to cope with the dirty men that go to the Happiness House. And whenever the little tea boy came by the house to sell tea to the women, Lakshmi would turn away because she didn't want to waste any money on anything else, but the little tea boy would offer to give Lakshmi free tea.

1. He treats them kindly, but he feels sorry for them. Sometimes he gives to people because he has pity for them, but other times its genuine.

2. He knows he doesn't have that much cash on him and he tries to help the less fortunate. He tried to give more even when it wasn't required or asked for. He has a weakness for those who are less fortunate.

3. In one part of the story he tries to buy two nuns breakfast. Although they refuse he tries to help in some other way. Holden then donates $10 to their charity services even though he knows he doesn't have money left. Another time is when he buys his little sister a record. My literature circle book is "Tweak" by Nic Sheff and the protector that I chose is Gack.

1. Gack is the one who sells the drugs to Nic, but he doesn't just sell it to him he does it with him. Later on they do become friends and Gack seems to know more about the whole drug life than Nic does so he sort of looks out for Nic and makes sure that Nic doesn't get into too much trouble.

2. Gack knows that he has a problem, but he uses it to his advantage. He helps other worth their way around their own addictions, like Nic, and shows them how they can do it without harming others and just to do it for the satisfaction of their own self.

3. Gack protects Nic by being by his side a lot throughout the book. At first Nic doesn't trust him, but later on Gack does return back with the drugs in exchange for the wad of cash that Nic gave him. Someone like Gack may seem like someone to scam you, but he didn't. He brought Nic to his house with his dad and guided him the way to be calm.

1. In the Help the protector Ms. Skeeter is tender towards the black ladies she put in her book by trying to comfort their fears of being hurt if they got discovered. Ms. Skeeter is also very patient and doesn't push the story out of them.
2. To herself she tries to keep herself from Stuart her (ex)boyfriend and the ladies of The League so she cannot be persecuted by them.
3. She lies to her mother about being with Stuart after they broke up because she is afraid of her mother being more worried about her not getting married. She also protects the ladies in her book by changing their names and where it takes place.

I am reading " Tweak " by Nic Sheff. The character in this book who i think is a protector, is Spencer.

1. Spencer is nic's sponsor. He helped Nic by convincing him to go back to L.A and start a new life and that he will help him find a place to stay and get away from his destruction and addiction to drugs.

2. Spencer knows how Nic feels, and he encourages Nic by making him laugh and see the positive side of life if he starts changing his ways. He also has been through what Nic is going through, so he knows that everything takes time and he is willing to help Nic every step of the way.

3. Spencer helped protect Nic because he convinced Nic to fly to L.A and he paid for the tickets so that Nic wont change his mind. He also find Nic a place to stay, and work with Nic daily. He has a lot of patience and he is very encouraging. He has a lot of things in common with Nic, which makes Nic's step to a new life a bit more easier.

My book is the "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card.
Colonel Graff is one of the protectors in the book.

2. He recognizes that some of his students are wiser, smarter than him, but he does not show that.

3. a. He attacked another student on the space shuttle to establish reputation for Ender.
b. He hid the fact that Ender killed two people from his fights.

I am reading The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. In her memoir, she tells the story of her life growing up and how she was influenced through the people surrounding her. I believe that her younger brother Brian was a very positive influence in her life because of his PROTECTOR attitude.

1. How is the protector tender toward the weaknesses in the other characters?
Brian is the only son in his family and feels the need to protect them because their Dad is an alcoholic. He knows that his father doesnt have the willpower to stop drinking so he takes it upon himself to look after the others.

2. How is the protector tender toward his/her own weakness?
Although Brian is a protector of the family, he still cannot disobey his father because he is too young to overcome him.

3. How does the protector PROTECT? State at least two examples that you've read about so far?
After Jeanette comes home from a fight with a gang of girls, he takes it upon himself to confront them and even fight. He also defends their home from a group of boys who want to pick a fight and make fun of their family for being poor.

My literature circle book that I'm reading is "Sold" by Patricia McCormick. I believe that the protector in the story is Shahanna.

1. Shahanna was more tender toward Lakshmi than others because when Lakshmi was new to the "happiness house" she treated her better and cared for her. She stood by Lakshmi's side when she was ill and emotionally ill. Shahanna provided Lakshmi with care, company, and advice.

2. Shahanna understands that her debt to Mumtaz won't be paid until many more years, just like every other girl working for Mumtaz. Since Mumtaz is in charge at regulating the girls money, she has all the power over them. Shahanna's weakness is that she would like to help others, like Lakshmi, but she has to focus on paying off her own debt, so she could leave the happiness house and go back home.

3. Shahanna protects Lakshmi by teaching her how to cope with the dirty men that come to the happiness house. She also tells Lakshmi everything she knows about the danger that could happen if you try to run away and how dangerous some of the Americans could be. Shahanna also kept Lakshmi's secrets.

I am reading "The Stranger" by Albert Camus. This story talks about the life of Monsieur Meursault after his mother's funeral. In my opinion, the protector in this story would most likely be Marie, Meursault's lover.

1. Marie acted as a way for Meursault to take his mind off his mother's death by spending time with her. Marie also spends quality time with Meursault to improve their relationship.

2. Marie wants to be loved so she wanted to spend more time with Meursault to improve their relationship together in hope that they will eventually marry in the future.

I am currently reading Ender's Game, a science fiction novel by American author Orson Scott Card. Card has lived and continues to live in Greensboro, North Carolina where much of Ender's Game is influenced by. It was a short story originally before Card expanded it. Ender's Game Set in Earth's future, a military school finds and trains fleet commanders to fight against "buggers," a deadly alien insect species, from taking over Earth. Ender Wiggin is the protagonist who is prophesied as the future hero of Earth. As Ender goes through his journey, He meets Alai, a fellow Battle School soldier, who becomes a protector.

1. Ender is hated amongst the other kids of the Battle School because he is the most gifted of them all. He gets slightly bullied and does not have any friends. Alai befriends him, comforting Ender and making it more comfortable for Ender to be himself. This allows Ender to grow as a commander.

2. Alai is a very talented fleet commander himself, but Ender is a better strategist. He, the better fighter, teaches Ender combat while Ender guides Alai in what plans to use as attack.

3. When Ender seemingly had no friends, Alai played a game with Ender to help change the other kids' attitudes toward Ender. This allowed for Ender to be approved by the boys and put him in a better situation. Second, Ender cried when he found out he had to transfer, and Alai comforted and hugged him. He whispered in his ear to tell him he would be okay, and this reminded Ender of his mother. Alai is a symbol of family for Ender at the Battle School, and he is comforting for Ender, allowing him to move on.

I'm reading "The Stranger" by Albert Campus. The protector in this novel is Marie Cardona.

1. Marie is tender toward the feelings of other characters specially Mersault when he is imprisoned and is awaiting trial. She stays faithful to him and is seen as a blessing.

2. Marie Cardona, is tender towards mersaults weakness by marring him because he is 'in love' although it is not shown that her intentions were clear because she also enjoyed that he wasn't so intrigued by her life when they were apart. Marie stays faithful to Mersault and she never gives up home on him. His weakness being the want of freedom at a point.

3. Marie protected when she asked Mersault to go check what is going on in the room next door where Raymond is with his mistress. she asks him to call the police, but Mersault refuses.

I am reading "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card. The protector I chose is Valentine Wiggin.

1. Valentine only protects the main character Ender Wiggin, and she is very caring towards him. When Ender is getting violently thrashed around by his brother Peter Wiggin, she steps in to negotiate and talk Peter out of doing so. She also knows Ender more than anyone else, but still does not know everything about him.
2. Valentine's weakness is that she is too soft and kind. What she does to counteract this weakness is by being so smart in her debating and negotiating that the opponent has to agree with her because of her common sense. So she uses her intelligence to hide her handicap.
3. Valentine protects by protecting Ender from Peter's wraith. In one scene of "Ender's Game", Valentine shows Ender what she had to endure because she stepped in and disrupted Peter's fun. I'm reading Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, and the character I chose that enacts the role of "protector" is Ender Wiggin.

1) Ender recognizes weaknesses in other characters or relates to them when they are treated as lesser beings, and he empathizes with them by trying to make light of the situation. Or at the least, he doesn't continue to pour salt into the wound(s).

2) Ender is tender towards his own weaknesses because he knows when he's afraid and when he's angry/unhappy, but he chooses to ignore them. He doesn't want to look weak in front of others, even though he's only so young.

3) Examples of Ender doing the protecting include: 1. the time Shen was bullied by Bernard, and Ender stood up for Shen by retaliating against Bernard. 2. when the Launchies were being harassed by older kids or commanders, Ender wanted to quit his extra lessons with them. He didn't want to drag the innocent kids down with him and told them they should just quit their daily lessons.

I am reading Catcher in the Rye. In my reading so far, I think Old Spencer is the protector.

1. The main character Holden, has been failing his way out of almost every school he has attended. Old Spencer wanted to help Holden stay at Pencey so he tried talking some sense into him. Unfortunately, Old Spencer wasn't able to convince Holden to do his work and to stay focused.

2. I think one of Spencer's weaknesses was his age. When Holden went to say bye to him at his house, Old Spencer couldn't even get out of his chair. Holden described him as weak and fragile looking. I think that was one of the reasons why he couldn't persuade Holden as much as he wish he could have. He didn't have the strength or energy to continue to push him.

3. Old Spencer tried protecting Holden in many ways. First, while he was at Pencey, Spencer offered to help Holden with his assignments and even passed him on things he should've failed. Spencer didn't want Holden to get kicked out of Pencey. The second reason that shows he's a protector is when Holden goes to his house to say good bye. Spencer is a little harsh with Holden and scolds him for what he's done. Old Spencer didn't mean to be rude with Holden, but he wanted to show that he cared and he didn't want Holden to fall into the same habits. He wants Holden to succeed in life and he makes it clear to him.

My literature circle book is "Sold" by Patricia Mccormick, published in 2006. The story is about the narrator Lakshmi, a poor girl from Nepal, was sold different times, and eventually became a victim of sexual slavery. One of the protector in this book is Ama, Lakshmi's mother.

1. Even though woman have extremely low social status in Nepal, Ama tries to take best care of Lakshmi and his brother. When Lakshmi's stepfather wants to make Lakshmi go to the city and work as a maid in the first time, Ama strongly refused and insisted that Lakshimi should go to school.

2. One weakness of Ama is that she is too docile. She obeys the rules in her society and order of her husband attentively.

3. One example, as I stated in question 1, is that Ama tries to protect Lakshmi from taken away from school. Another example that demonstrates Ama protect peole around her is that when there was a drought, and the money they have was scarce. Ama sells away her earings, which may mean something vital to her since she wore them eveyday, for exchange of some food and water.

The literature circle book that I am reading is "The Glass Castle", by Jeannette Walls. I think the protector is Brain.

1. Brain is the only son in the Walls family. Although he is the second youngest, he always try his best to help his parents and sisters. He shows his care and love when his family gets into trouble. When Jeannette was in trouble, he was the one that most likely to help her.

Brain seems like a protector in the making. Since he is young, he doesn't have the ability or strength to protect himself or his family. It's said that his grandma would try to do terrible things to him. I'm sure as he gets older he'll realize all that happened to him and it'll make him a better protector to his own family.

The book I am reading is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and I chose Hans Hubermann as my Protector

1. Hans takes other people's feeling into consideration and doesn't judge anyone. He does his best make people feel better when things are hard.

2. Hans really puts himself last after everyone. He always puts Liesel before his needs and always helps her when she needs it. So to me, it really seems that he doesn't really matter to himself.

3. Hans acts as the protector with Liesel and Max. He protects Liesel by comforting her when she had nightmares and wet the bed the times she did. He always stays up with her at night as well. He protects Max by helping him with his hiding. When Max came to his door, Hans did not shut the door in his face or turn him down. He let Max in with open arms and offered his assistance with whatever he could give.

In the book, "Ender's Game" by Orson Scoot Card, Valentine is one of the various protectors of this this book as she protects Ender.

1. She acts as a protector times such as when he protects Ender from Peter as she loves ender more than peter even though they are siblings.

2. As I continue in this book, as she finds various ways to protect ender not only from peter but also from those in his battle school, she finds a interesting theory in the world that she wants to distribute which acts as the protector of the world by this discovery.

3. Not only does Valentine protect ender, but she also tries her best to change the view of the world's politics as she finds it totalitarian like and undemocratic as well as injustice.

I am reading "China Boy" by Gus Lee. Toussaint plays the role of the protector.

1) He taught Kai how to live life on the streets
2) Toussaint let Kai joined the Y even though the membership to join. Toussaint doesn't expect much from Kai because he knows how it feels to be the one left out, so he takes Kai in like a little brother.
3) Toussaint protects Kai by teaching him the way of life in the streets, which makes Kai's life easier than it was before.

In the book The Help by Kathryn Stockett, Miss Skeeter plays the role of the protector.

1. Miss Skeeter is the protector in this story. She wants to protect the black people or the help. She was raised by a help that supported her and loved her. She has a lot of respect for black people, and she wants to help them achieve equality and no longer be subjected and discriminated by black people.

2. Living in a segregation dominated town, Jackson, Mississippi, she is in a very bad position to help black people. Everyone in her town is against equal rights for black people. However, she subtly gathers stories to write a book about the struggles of black people. She tries her best to gather the helps in secret to write down their stories. She does this without any of her white friends knowing. She does not give up on collecting her stories to achieve her dreams as a writer but at the same time helping blacks gain equality.

3. How does the protector PROTECT? State at least two examples that you've read about so far?
Miss Skeeter protects by talking to Aibileen and apologizing for the harsh things she has to hear at the meetings about separate toilets. Miss Skeeter cares and tries to protect the feelings of Aibileen. Miss Sketeter also tries to protect Yule when Miss Hilly inquired what Yule is doing. She protects the helps by trying to a book to reveal the struggles black maids go through to serve white people.

I am reading "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett and I feel that the protector is Miss Skeeter.

1. Miss Skeeter is tender towards the help in that she genuinely cares about their feelings. She is constantly worrying about making Aibileen feel comfortable in her presence, and takes certain measures to make sure that Aibileen feels as though she can trust her.

2. Miss Skeeter's weakness is that she longs to know about the mysterious disappearance of her old maid, Constantine. She is tender to this weakness in that every chance she gets, she asks Aibileen what she might know about what happened to Constantine. Skeeter also tries inquiring about the firing of the maid to both of her parents, however, to no avail.

3. Miss Skeeter protects in that she puts off publishing the Home Health Sanitation issue for as long as she can, so as not to offend the colored help or hurt their feelings. In taking such a huge risk with writing the book on the help, Skeeter also works to protect the help by changing their identities, while trying to work to protect their rights as citizens.

Tweak by Nic Sheff:

1. Nic is tender towards his girlfriend Lauren because when she got a seizure from the drugs, he couldn't help himself but try to save her by doing CPR and calling the police. He ended up saving Lauren's life and she was able to stay alive till the ambulance came.

2. Nic knows that it's really wrong to steal from people he knows. However, he feels guilty for stealing it. He also tried to change his lifestyle by quitting his drug addiction, and saving money to invest in something worthwhile.

3. Nic protects others more than himself. He cares for his girlfriend, Lauren, and he cares for his family. He protects his girlfriend from almost dying when he shot up drugs in her system, and he protects his family from not being in contact with them because he didn't want them to worry so much, and have his siblings get influenced by him.

I am reading THE GLASS CASTLE by Jeannette Walls. The protectors in this book are Jeannette and Brian.

1. Jeannette Walls is tender towards the other characters by giving them what they want despite the circumstances. For example, her father spends crucial money on booze. When Jeannette is finally handling the money she made sure that there was enough money to feed the entire family for the month. However, when her father asked her money for booze, she hesitantly gave him the money, despite the tight budget.
2. Jeannette's weakness is her father. Her father is the one person she cannot neglect, despite the circumstances. She desperately attempts to persuade her father to halt his drinking, yet fails.
3. i.
Jeannette protects by trying to find food for her family. Although she is only a child, she knows that her parents aren't going to provide for the family, so her and Brian go an expeditions scavenging for food.
ii.
Jeannette saves up money for her sister to go to New York, to protect her from the lunatics she calls family, so she can become someone who can support herself.

In my book "China Boy" buy Gus Lee, I feel that the protector is Toussaint.
Toussaint understands that Kai can not protect himself when others pick on him so Toussaint befriends him and tries to help Kai learn to protect himself.
Toussaint knows that his family doesn't have that much money, but like his mother, he shares what he has with the people around him and Kai. Since he also doesn't have a father, he makes one up from listening to Kai describe how nice his own father is which makes Toussaint happy.
Toussaint protects Kai by trying to teach him how to defend himself against the other boys in the neighborhood. He also is the first friend of Kai. This is protecting Kai because it gives Kai a feeling that someone has his back and would help him whenever he is in need.

My Literature Circle book is The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak.

Hans Hubermann plays the role of a protector in The Book Thief. He is an important role model for Liesel.

1.Unlike his wife Rosa Hubermann, Hans Hubermann protects and comforts Liesel when she has nightmares at night. He helps her through this every night, even if it means losing sleep. He is projected to be the protector when he first comforted Liesel in the beginning of the book.

2.Hans Hubermann cares too little for his opinion about his own life; he always obey his wife’s orders and opinions. For example, although he enjoys playing the piano accordion for money, he doesn’t because his wife is unhappy about it.

3. As a protector, he shows selfless behavior towards Liesel. An example is when he comforts her at night. He is the first person to teach Liesel to read. He reads with her every night after she awakes from her nightmares.

The book I'm reading in my literature circle is "The Help", by Kathryn Stockett, and I think that Miss Skeeter is the protector.

1. I think that Miss Skeeter is tender toward the weaknesses in the other characters by being patient with them. When she asks Aibleen and the other maids if she can interview them, she doesn't immediately expect them to say yes to her seemingly ridiculous request. She makes them feel comfortable when she interviews them, and genuinely cares for their safety and well being.

2. Skeeter's weakness is that she is eager for information, she constantly asks Aibleen what happened to her late maid Constantine, but she must resist her natural instincts to uncover the ugly truth.

3. Skeeter protects the maids by messing up Hilly's Home Help Sanitation plan in the League newsletter. She also protects the help by taking extra precautions when visiting Aibleen for interviews.

2. Meursault is tender towards his own weaknesses by avoiding any emotion that comes to him. When thoughts of his dead mother comes up he changes his thoughts to another subject.

In "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak, Hans Hubermann is the true protector throughout the book. He protects Liesel as a father and teaches her how to read.
1. How is the protector tender toward the weaknesses in the other characters?
When Liesel is not feeling happy or she's upset, Hans seems to comfort her like a loving father.

He puts everyone else before himself. He puts Liesel first before himself because she is his adopted daughter and he loves her.

Hans protects Liesel by comforting her. Whenever Liesel has a nightmare or she wets her bed, he stays with her until she can sleep and comforts her. He also makes sure Max is safe since he is hiding from the Nazi Party.

The book my literature circle is reading is called “Sarah’s Key” and it was written by Tatiana de Rosnay. The characters that I think play the role of protectors are Jules and Genevieve.

1. Jules and Genevieve are an elderly couple that found and gave refuge to Sarah and Rachel. After they managed to escape from Auschwitz, the girls needed a place to hide from the authorities. The couple took them in as their own, along with other Jewish children, and tried to give them as much of a comfortable life as possible.

2. Jules and Genevieve were farmers. This is a clear indication that they probably weren't the richest people ever, maybe not even close to being in the middle-class level. They most likely struggled to put food on the table daily, and had to work very hard to earn their money. Nevertheless, they still took in quite a few Jewish children and gave them shelter, on top of having kids of their own. They were genuinely humble people, and tried to put others before themselves, regardless of their own weaknesses.

3. The fact that Jules and Genevieve took in Sarah and Rachel in the first place labels them as protectors. They hid them from the Gestapo and took care of them like they were their own children. Nobody forced them, and they could have turned their backs to these Jewish children, but they didn't. Not only that, but when Rachel got sick, they called a Nazi doctor to see what was wrong with the little girl. They tried to do everything they possibly could to try and save her life, even if it meant getting caught by the Nazi officials. Both of these instances demonstrate that Jules and Genevieve protected Rachel and Sarah from beginning to end. If it wasn't for their kind hearts, these kids would not have gone far at all, and Sarah would not have been able to go back to Paris for her brother.

2. She is tender towards her own weaknesses by doing what she can and admitting that she cannot do some things.
