2.  How do actions of characters reveal their personalities?

Andrew L. , Period 5
11/7/2012 02:05:28 pm

CLAIM: The personalities of a person are clearly exemplified through one’s actions that are demonstrated.

EVIDENCE: For example in the novel, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Jack demonstrated his true identity of being a monstrous savage by his perfidy towards hunting rather than sustaining an egalitarian society. He demonstrates it by his volatile personality when he is denied the continuation of hunting. He disputes to Ralph, “ Jack stood up and took the conch. ‘So this is a meeting to find out what’s what. I’ll tell you what’s what. You littluns started all this, with the fear talk. Beasts! Where from? Of course we’re frightened sometimes but we put up with being frightened… Anyway, you don’t hunt or build or help— you’re a lot of cry-babies and sissies… ”(82).

ELABORATION: Jack’s enforce of hunting, led his forceful thoughts to be invoked with discussions that revolve around hunting. His continued thoughts exemplify his personality as a savage.

Raymond,

I'm so proud of you for posting.

Let's meet together at lunch one day this week, so I can help you with the formatting of claim, evidence, and elaboration.

Let me know what day works for you. I can meet any day except Thursday.

Claim:
A characters personality can only be revealed by how they act. You can never really know how they act until they act on something.

Evidence:
For example in the novel, LORD OF THE FLIES by William Golding, Ralph betrays piggy and tell the community what his real name was even after piggy told him not to." He's not fatty,"cried Ralph,"his real name's Piggy!" (21).

Elaboration:
This quote shows how friends will betray friends to get in to a group or a club. How Ralph wanted to be apart of the people who made fun of Piggy. After piggy feels betrayed and Ralph doesn't fully apologize for his actions.

Courtney Thong
11/11/2012 01:19:25 pm

I agree with it because it is true how people personality comes out, the way they act. Ralph shouldn't have made fun of Piggy in order to get into the group. Ralph was pals with Piggy before he joined the group and shouldn't abandoned him. What Ralph did to Piggy was so mixed up.

lika m. period 5

I agree with your post, Eric. Personality of people are shown through actions and sometimes their attitudes. The passage shows Ralph's personality when he makes fun of Piggy. It shows that he is an arrogant, mean child who does not care about Piggy's feelings.

Aron I. Period 5

Claim:
The actions of the characters reveal their personalities by showing that the characters do what they do because it comes out of their personalities to affect the others around them, such as when someone does a kind act, that person seems to be a kind person.

Evidence:
For example, when Jack is yelling at Piggy because of Jack is annoyed with Piggy, he says “Oh, shut up!”, and after that Piggy says “’I got the conch,’ said Piggy, in a hurt voice. ‘ I got the right to speak.’” (44).

Elaboration:
Jack shows his nature of cruelty by interrupting Piggy and Piggy is affected by being hurt from Jack’s cruel nature, which shows how personalities come out from the actions of a character and affect other people around them.

Jacelyn K., Per 6
11/11/2012 09:09:43 am

I agree with you. Personality is show through action and how it affects each person individually. Jack's cruel nature seems to be one of the most spottingly obvious personality that showed through action. It shows his viciousness and first to become savage.

Wei L. Period 5
11/11/2012 03:02:20 pm

Your claim is a great example of how people like Jack can be very unpleasant to other around him. He finds his own horrible way of solving his problems by making fun of someone else. Jack shows his personalities by being a shameful leader.

Dinh T, Period 5
11/9/2012 11:30:33 am

Claim:
Actions reveal a character's personality because if a person was intelligent, they would know how act quickly, know the right things to do, and know how to guide people.

Evidence:
For example in the novel, LORD OF THE FLIES by William Golding, Piggy shows that he is intelligent by telling people what they should have done instead of breaking the rules and disobeying Ralph’s order. Piggy says, “The first thing we ought to have made was shelters down by the beach…But the first time Ralph says ‘fire’ you goes howling and screaming up this here mountain“(45).

Elaboration:
Piggy is intelligent because of what he says and this shows that he knows the right thing to do and he also knows how to guide people. If he never told everyone this, they probably would still be doing something irrelevant to their survival and there would still be mob mentality. This shows that a person's action can reveal their personality.

Aron I. Period 5
11/11/2012 11:49:33 am

I think that you made a very good example of how a person’s actions reveal his or her personality. Your claim and elaboration made me think that Piggy is the most intelligent out of the group. Piggy’s intelligence, skills to guide, and moral thoughts make him what should be a good leader and person, which is shown through his actions.

Cally M., Period 5
11/11/2012 01:56:01 pm

I agree with your statement that actions do reveal the personalities of people because their intelligence and way of thinking is shown through their choices. Piggy did prove himself to be an intelligent person by voicing his reasonable ideas as well as his opinions on the actions of the other boys.

An H., Period 5
11/11/2012 02:12:58 pm

While Piggy is showing intelligence, it also shows something else in his personality. It shows that he is kind to other people because he is caring for them by guiding them on what they should be doing. It also shows that he is kind because he was chastising them on what they did wrong.

CLAIM
An individual's action will reveal their personalities by showing what that person will resort to when a situation comes up, no matter what that situation may actually be.
EVIDENCE
For example on page 60 in the book, LORD OF THE FLIES, Roger is seen to have walked though the littluns sand castles, kicking it down and destroying it. Whether if the sand castle was in his way, or if it was just a decision he made on a whim, this shows that Roger is inconsiderate and feels very authoritative over the kids. But later shown in page 62, Roger tacitly aims rock towards Henry's position, missing purposely. This shows that Roger still contains a sense of morality despite of his inconsiderate side.
ELABORATION
The personality of an individual mostly determines their actions, and actions determine what their personality really is. Actions of wrong doing could not just have society determine your personality as bad, but determines you whole as a bad person, which can sometimes be very misleading.

James Zhijie R., Period 5
11/12/2012 08:18:47 pm

I think this is a very good evidence you gave to support this. Based on the novel, it says Maurice, who followed Roger's actions, still felt an sense of wrongdoing without parent supervision. This fact doesn't make Maurice's personality any different from Roger's because he did the same as what Roger did to the sandcastles. If Maurice really cared, he would've avoid stepping on the castle and would've warned Roger to do the right thing.

Dawson W., Period 5

I agree with you alvin. In life many people have different personalities and the one way they show it is by showing who they are. The way they act and the things that they do. It shows to people what kind of person you are and how they want to think of you.

Benjamin Lee., Period 5

I agree on a good elaboration and good evidence. They must show good things and do what is best for each other. So then they will be able to work together.

An H., Period 5
11/9/2012 02:59:33 pm

Claim: Actions reveal a lot about their personalities because their action shows what they are truly thinking.

Evidence: When Piggy, in LORD OF THE FLIES, said that Jack shouldn’t have let the fire go out, and hearing some agreement from his own group of hunters “drove Jack to violence... He took a step, and able at last to hit someone, stuck his fist into Piggy’s stomach…Jack stood over him. His voice was vicious with humiliation. ‘You would, would you? Fatty!’” (71).

Elaboration: Jack attacking Piggy shows that Jack is the type of person that doesn’t like getting told that he was wrong by another person. It also shows that he doesn’t like to be humiliated by another person and could try to humiliated that other person back.

Justin Tang

I agree with your claim because when people want to show their anger, they do it with their actions. When Jack was mad he tried taking out his anger by pushing Piggy around. He felt good when they were making fun of him and that shows that hes just a jerk. It was his fault but he still found a way to avoid the blame.

Dinh T, Period 5
11/11/2012 01:12:10 pm

I like your quote because it shows that Jack has a bad temper person because he took his anger out by hitting Piggy and insulting him. I also agree that he does not like being told that what he did was wrong because he would not have hit Piggy if he didn't say anything.

Robert Carrasco
11/12/2012 03:01:11 pm

I agree with your quote because, when people show their anger they show it in their own way. Example Jack he showed his anger with violence and punching piggy in the stomach. This shows Jack's true personality. Good example by the way

Cally M, Period 5
11/9/2012 03:52:27 pm

Claim: Personalities of characters are revealed by their actions because their choices show their judgment, views, and opinions on all aspects of an issue, which exposes the morals of a person.
Evidence: Ralph’s decision to reveal Piggy’s nickname shows his cynical side. When Piggy confronted him about it, his response was not sincere or considerate. “Better Piggy than Fatty,” he said at last with the directness of genuine leadership, “and anyway I’m sorry if you feel like that…”
Elaboration: An insensitive side of Ralph’s personality is shown through his decision to ignore Piggy’s request in keeping his nickname private. Ralph showed that he lacked the qualities of a person that can be trusted.

I agree with you claim because most people don't know the different between helping and hurting someone. Ralph's didn't know that he was hurting Piggy but at least Ralph could have apologized sincerely. Ralph makes it seem like he was doing his part for standing up for piggy but piggy didn't need anyone to stand up for him. Ralph might think he was being a good Samaritan but he actually hurt Piggy more than the other kids did.

Alvin O. per. 5
11/11/2012 10:52:42 am

I really agree with this post of yours Cally, because it also relates to the what I was trying to point out in my post. You're showing that although an individual's action may reveal an aspect of their personality, it doesn't reveal their entire personality by saying that Ralph showed both a cynical and considerate side.

Andrew L. , Period 5
11/11/2012 01:19:13 pm

The claim provided seems very logical in terms of Ralph's negligence towards Piggy. Ralph's inconsiderate words, have led to the unjust relationship between the two of them. Ralph proves his negligence through his actions by being a haughty leader. He has no understanding to how Piggy feels or how he feels about being mortified by everyone else. Piggy takes the insult obsequiously and Ralph sees it as a joke.

Alex D. Period 5
11/12/2012 09:29:53 am

I agree with you that actions resemble a person's personality. How people respond and react to problems and situations show whether they are smart, bold, brave, and compassionate. It shows what kind of person that really is. I also agree that Piggy is smart and has a very nice personality on the way he deals with thingsin the book.

Your example from the story truly was a great reflection on the theme of the weekly LORD OF THE FLIES post. Where you displayed Jack's true side of the story. It showed that he was not afraid of being over-ruling, and hold a monarchy over everyone.

Aren Lim
11/11/2012 01:41:27 am

claim:
Everything we do defines our character. Your personal choice to do something, or influence from others, it all defines who you are.

evidence:
"Piggy spoke, also dribbling.
'Aren't I having none?'
Jack had meant to leave him in doubt, as an assertion of power; but Piggy by advertising his omission made more cruelty necessary.
'You didn't hunt'
'No more did Ralph,' said Piggy wetly, 'nor Simon' He amplified. 'There isn't more than a ha'porth of meat in a crab.'
Ralph stirred uneasily. Simon sitting between the twins and Piggy, wiped his mouth and shoved his piece of meat over the rocks to Piggy, who grabbed it. The twins giggled and Simon lowered his face in shame.
Then Jack leapt to his feet, slashed off a great hunk of meat, and flung it down at Simon's feet.
'Eat! Damn you!'
He glared at Simon.
'Take it!'
He spun on his heel, center of a bewildered circle of boys.
'I got you meat!'
Nunberless and inexpressible frustrations combined to make his rage elemental and awe-inspiring."

elaboration:
The actions of Jack showed that he is utterly annoyed by Piggy, and that Piggy asking him why he does not get to eat, made him even more angry, how Piggy doesn't even know the answers to his own questions. Piggy in this sense, shows innocence in why he does not get to eat. He thinks in equality, wondering why everyone got to eat, while he had to suffer watching them devour a full pig. Simon in this situation shows that he just wants the two to just stop arguing. He is the one who is trying to solve problems, instead of starting them. Giving his piece of meat to Piggy in shame shows that he is doing something no one else wanted to do, but also knowing he could have greatly appreciated the meat himself.

I liked the way you showed what the characters are defined for. Jack gets annoyed by Piggy when he is trying to help out or making out benefits for the entire group. Jack is like the bossy one of the entire group or the bully. He always pushes people around no matter how young or older they are. And Ralph, he is the group leader but he sometimes did a terrible job on it.

Claim: Personalities of characters are revealed by their actions because they are what other people perceive them as.
Evidence: In LORD OF THE FLIES, Piggy says, "The first thing we ought to have made was shelters down by the beach". This shows that he was thinking about their community in a whole. Shelter was going to help them more than anything, even more than the fire. Fire was going to help them get off the island if people saw it, but the shelter was going to be more beneficial because they would have someone where to stay at when it got dark.
Elaboration: Some people need to realize what is more important when dealt with a real life situation. You need to prioritize what is most important first because it may end up being very crucial.

I agree with your post because people can dress strange or look very mean but when you get to know them they might be soft hearted and care for others. Jeffery W. Period 5

I agree with your post, Justin, because if people show what they do, then it makes you think what kind of person they are. Ralph wanted the priorities that they made to be done in order to ensure that everyone is safe on the island. Jack wanted his own priorities of being a hunter and getting meat for the people on the island.

Elaboration:

Evidence: For example, after hitting Piggy in the stomach for giving an opinion and showing his anger, Jack apologizes-- but not for what he did to Piggy. He says, "'All right, all right.' He looked at Piggy, at the hunters, at Ralph. 'I'm sorry. About the fire, I mean. There I--' He drew himself up. ' --I apologize '" (72).

Elaboration: Jack hits Piggy for saying too much and for threatening him. When Ralph says it was a "dirty trick", Jack apologizes, but he apologizes only for letting the fire go out when they could have been rescued. Jack's reaction to Piggy shows that he has an arrogant, prideful personality. He would never lower his pride and be sorry for hurting Piggy and his feelings.

Claim: A person's actions and responses reveal a character's personality. This is true because if a person was bright, they would thoroughly think through the problem or question and give the best possible solution. Being smart also means to know the right things to do at the right time and place.

Evidence: Piggy is a great example in the novel LORD OF THE FLIES by William Golding, Piggy is smart because he tells everybody what the right thing to do. Piggy knows that everybody listens to the leader Ralph, but Ralph's decisions are wrong. Piggy says, “The first thing we ought to have made was shelters down by the beach…But the first time Ralph says ‘fire’ you goes howling and screaming up this here mountain“ (pg. 45).

Elaboration: Piggy is smart because of actions and responses to problems and situations. In the situation above he knows it is wrong, so he is trying to tell everybody the right thing to do.Without him the group of boys probably wouldn't survive and Ralph being not very smart would lead them to death. This shows that people's actions represent their personalities.

He not only let go of a chance of being rescued, but he didn't even seem to care about this at first when he came back from his hunting. He says, “‘the fire’s only been out for an hour or two. Claim: Actions of characters show how the person is. Their action reveals how their personalities are. If you do bad actions for no reason, that shows that you have a bad personality. If you have a good personality then you do good deeds and actions.

Evidence: For example, in the LORD OF THE FLIES by William Golding shows us how Jack has a bad attitude and does bad actions by making fun of the little ones and especially Piggy. "' Shut up, Fatty'" (21). In contrast to Jack, there's Piggy who only worries and tries to figure out ways to be rescued and keep them civilized which shows how he has a good personality by doing those good actions and deeds.

Some vote for Jack but, more votes go to Ralph. ( textual evidence) "All right. Who wants Jack for chief? " With dreary obedience the choir raised their hands. " Who wants me? " Every hand outside the choir except Piggy's was raised immediately. Then Piggy, too, raised his hand grudgingly into the air. Ralph counted. " I'm chief then."

For example: Ralph smiled and held up the conch for silence. “ Listen, everybody. I’ve got to have time to think things out. I can’t decide what to do straight off. Three of us-if we take more we’d get all mixed, and lose each other-three of us will go on an expedition and find out. I’ll go, and Jack and, and…” ( pg 23-24)

Elaboration:
This shows on how Ralph would demonstrate his leadership as being a chief. He would give out rules, orders, and teams to do these type of activities so then everyone in the island would be safe and able to survive.
