5th Say, Mean, Matter Post

10/14/2013

Say, Mean, Matter Discussion Forum—You will contribute one Say, Mean, Matter post online each week. You may choose the content of your post. Consider the following possibilities:

a.     Important newspaper articles, which you can find online or in a print newspaper

b.     Textual quotes from the literature you are reading

c.     Any contemporary issue that intrigues you

You will then analyze the content in terms of “What does it (whatever you chose) SAY?” This is a summary, so put the content into your own words.

The next section will be titled, “What does it MEAN?” This is an interpretation. This is where you determine what the content means. This is YOUR interpretation based on your background knowledge and your knowledge of the subject matter, etc.

The final section is the “What does it MATTER?” This is the implication piece. What are the possible outcomes? How will this content impact you, the community, the nation, the world? See columns below. There will be a sample SAY, MEAN, MATTER post online for you to consider while you compose your own. Your SMM post is due online each Friday at midnight.

Please use your first name and last initial and YOUR CLASS PERIOD. You will NOT receive credit if there is no class period listed.

Gregory Boyle, in TATTOOS ON THE HEART, wrote, "You stand with the belligerent, the surly, and the badly behaved until bad behavior is recognized for the language it is: the vocabulary of the deeply wounded and of those whose burdens are more than they can bear"(179). (This is cited in MLA format.)

Say:

This says that bad behavior is a way of communicating one's pain and that standing with the badly behaved is necessary until the pain is revealed and understood.

Mean:

My interpretation of this passage is that it means that when people act out and misbehave that they are doing so because they are in tremendous pain. Either they've been neglected and their own needs are not being met, or they have been abused or hurt in some way, or perhaps they've suffered a loss that is too big for them to bear. Instead of using their words about how much pain they're in, they act out by doing things that are inappropriate and often illegal (This is a book about gangs.)

Matter:

This passage matters because it offers an explanation for bad behavior and challenges us to see beyond the behavior to the heart of the matter. If we can do that, then we may feel more empathy, and as a result, be able to stick it out with those who are acting badly rather than quickly dismiss, judge and abandon them.

" Never lie to someone who trusts you, never trust someone who lies to you " Tyga

Say : This quote by Tyga is basically saying that you should be careful of who you trust.

Mean: This quote mean that when you do gain their trust, don't lose it by lying to them. On the other hand, don't ever trust the person who lied to you, because once a liar is always a liar. You should be careful who to trust, because you might trust a liar with your secrets, and next thing you know they will haunt you back with your secrets, and the world will know about it. Otherwise, when someone who already trusts you with something, don't ever lie to them because they will end up regretting telling you all those things they've said to you. In other words, when you gain someone's trust, don't lose it by lying to them. And when you already lied to someone, don't expect them to trust you ever again. Simple as that.

Matter : This quote matters to me because i could easily connect to my daily life. Not only that i have gone through moments where i lost trust to someone, and when someone gain my trust . Truth of the matter is, someone who i actually knew since elementary, eventually lost my trust. Because people change and things happened. Therefore, you should just keep things that are quite personal to you, within yourself, maybe family, but mostly yourself. Sadly, once you tell someone something, there is no guarantee that he/she won't tell anyone. And then that's when conflict rise. I also know number of people who have lied to me, that now i don't really tell them anything anymore. It is important to gain someone's trust, because once you know they are trustworthy, you know they are your real friends.

Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings.
Salvador Dali

SAY: Without ambition, intelligence is useless.

MEAN: Intelligence without ambition is comparable to a bird without wings because both limit themselves of their true potential. If a person is not ambitious, he or she cannot make use of intelligence to pursue goals or interests.

MATTER: This matters because many people can be intelligent but lack the ambition to chase their goals. This is apparent in several students around the nation.

"A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing."
-George Bernard Shaw

SAY: This quote says that the mistakes we make in life are useful in some way. It is better to make mistakes and achieve something from them than to sit there and do nothing at all.

MEAN: I think this quote means that when we make mistakes, we learn from them. Therefore, making mistakes and learning is a much more useful way to spend our lives. We can better ourselves from the things we learn, and use this knowledge to make life easier.

MATTER: This matters because it allows people to explore and be adventurous. Some may be afraid of making mistakes, but this quote encourages it. This quote would help people look at their mistakes in a different perspective. Instead of feeling sad for messing up, they would learn to think more positively and learn from their mistakes.

"It's not how hard you can hit, it's how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward." Rocky Balboa

Say: This quote is saying that your resolve must be greater than your ability to get things done.

Mean: This means that its not your ability to "hit hard" thats important, however it is ones ability to get up and keep trying to accomplish a goal after getting "hit."

Matter: Some people lack the ability to keep trying after one attempt of something. It is paramount that a person keeps trying no matter how "hard" they get "hit."

“When you need something to believe in, start with yourself.”

Say- This quotes says that its always important to believe in yourself if you want to believe in something.

Mean- This quote means that its important that you always have hope in yourself with everything you do.

Matter- This matter because many people don't believe in their selves when they are suppose to. We people have to always have confidence in ourselves to succeed our goals.

"If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude"
Say: When something is not to your liking, do your best to change it. However, sometimes, its not the action that needs changing, its your attitude.

Mean: We are in control, and that just means we can change what we don't like. This encourages me to stop complaining about what I dont like, because in the end, it'll always be my fault if i dont change it.

Matter: This really says a lot, because whether we enjoy the activity or not, depends a lot on our attitude. We can have a bad attitude and simply hate on everything, or project a healthy attitude and just enjoy the moment.

"Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we've done something wonderful, that's what matters to me."
-Steve Jobs
Say: Steve Jobs is emphasizing the fact that it's not about how much money you can make in your lifetime, but rather about how much you have actually accomplished each day and night.
Mean: The meaning behind this is that people shouldn't stress about how rich they will become, they need to appreciate their job at the end of the day and feel like what they've done has positively affected people in different ways.
Matter: This matters because many high school students (especially first generation children) are choosing careers that are in high demand and receive a big paycheck at the end of the year because they are feeling pressured by their parents and even themselves. But what really matters is students choosing a career they love at the end of the day.

"Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other"- Abraham Lincoln

Say: The 16th president of the United States is saying that nobody in this world matters more than yourself. You must take care of yourself before anyone else.

Mean: Many think that this world is meant for us to help others, but in reality if your not happy, then your not doing your job in life.

Matter: This matters because so many people aren't doing what they really love and aren't pushed into doing what they feel is right. They do what others tell them to do which isn't essential to a progressing society.

"Never stop believing" - Chau Trinh

Say: This quote tells us to never give up on our dreams. Something that is extremely important for all of us to understand. If we ever give up on what we truly strive for, then there would never be anyone succesful.

Mean: This means that the world is a place of dreams. Dreams should never be given up on because we only live once and should cherish everything that we strive for.

Matter: This matters because without our persistence the world would cease to exist. We must never give up on our dreams because our dreams is what keeps us motivated and strong.

“It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not.” André Gide

Say: It is saying that it is better to be hated for who you are instead of being loved for who you are not.

Mean: This means that it is much more better to be loved or hated for who you are than to be loved for who you are not. To be loved for being ourself is a much better feeling than to be loved for not being ourselves. We would feel much more comfortable and much happier that way.

Matter: There are some people out there who pretends to be someone they are not. Others may like them for who they are not but they would not be as happy for them to love them for who they are. People tend to be loved for who they are not than be hated for who they are.

- Albert Einstein

Say: it says that the universe is filled with stupidity within people, children, and adults

Mean: it means that no matter what, and how hard one person trys, there will always be somebody in a group, or in his or her viscinity that is filled with stupidity.

"Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it."
-Bruce Lee

Say: He is stating that you should create yourself and not copy someone else's aspects.

Mean: This quote means that a person should find their own road to follow and create their own footsteps, instead of following other people's path and duplicating their originality.

Matter: This matters because the world should not have people who copies each other, they should come up with their own style and enforce it, otherwise everyone would do or look the same.

The more you like yourself, the less you are like anyone else, which makes you unique.-Walt Disney

Say:
If you are like yourself, you aren't going to be like anyone else.
Mean:
In order for an individual to be considered "unique" one must stand out from the crowd. However, in order to stand out of the crowd one must be themselves, individuals rather than pretending to be someone you are not in order to receive attention.
Matter:
Our generation is hedonistic- self pleasing. However, the matter in which we go about accomplishing it defies what it means to be an individual. Although we live in an individualistic society, where everyone fends for themselves, we tend to look to others for appreciation. This quote exemplifies that if we want to stand out from the crowd we must be ourselves not anyone else.

Say: Work hard without anyone caring and let your success be what makes everyone notice.

Mean:To be successful people dont need others to see them and get gratification for their "hard work." To the people that deserve the apprreciation they realize that the best way to get it is to succeed.

"The world is your oyster! Make lemonade!" - Cristina Yang from Grey's Anatomy

Say: To me this says "Hey you. Go out and do something".

Mean: I always find Cristina Yang quotes super inspirational. This quote is essentially the love child of two different quotes meaning the same thing: "The world is your oyster" and "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade". To me it means that you are in a place full of opportunities, so take the chance and take them all. Make things happen for you, don't just sit around waiting to be the "next big thing".

Matter: When I'm down or bored, I like to motivate myself with these quotes so that I'm not being totally unproductive. This matters to me because I'd like to think of myself as the kind of person who takes chances and looks for opportunities, and when I cant find any then I create my own.

Say: Trying to remember something is like trying to catch fog, and trying to forget is like trying to hold back a monsoon.

Mean: Its so hard to remember something, when you think you've got it, it slips away again. It's like trying to catch the wind, you'll always have it but you will never really have it. Trying to forget is so hard because its like a hurricane of emotions, experiences, and memories that are coming at you.

Mean: I think this means to don't listen to others, go with what you think. If you go with what your heart tells you, you will be happy.

"Sometimes we get sad about things and we don't like to tell other people that we are sad about them. We like to keep it a secret. Or sometimes, we are sad but we really don't know why we are sad, so we say we aren't sad but we really are."
-Mark Haddon, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

Say: This says that, as humans, we tend to become sad about certain things whether we know why we're sad or not. It's just a feeling we get from time to time that often confuses us due to the fact that we don't know how to explain why is it that we feel that way.

Mean: To me, this means that we feel things we can't always explain. Sadness is something we feel much too often, more often than we should and majority of the time people like to ask us why we're sad or if we're sad and we say we're not, but deep down inside we know we are. We just don't know why sometimes and it turns into a nuisance.

Matter: This matters to me because I have felt this many times. This passage is very relatable and makes a lot of sense to me because this often does happen to me. So much goes on in life that sometimes you can't help but get sad from time to time. The frustrating part is that you don't know why you feel that way sometimes. You'll just be doing something and you'll probably think of something that leads to you feeling sad. It sucks.

Say: You must take action with the experience you received.

Mean: The quote means that with the experience you obtain, it is nothing if you don't take action with it. If you continue doing the same before you experienced it, then the experience hasn't made you a better person.

Matter: Too many people have an experience but doesn't change to be better. They may have gotten a bad grade in a test, but if they don't change their habits then they are not changed by this experience. Experience is to be learned from instead of just letting it past and not change.

Mean: Sometimes, talking too much isn't a good thing. Other people can misinterpret what you said and they might think differently. When you something, it can mean something good, but it can mean something bad to others.

Matter: Saying something wrong is really horrible because you can't take it back. Even saying "just kidding" afterwards can put a bad image on yourself. Mean: There are evil people everywhere, and people would gossip about them. They would talk about their evil deeds, background, but they never take action. The evil would continue to act if nothing is done about them.

Matter: Many historical figures were evil people who was able to do what they want. One of them is Adolf Hitler, the leader of Nazi. I believe that there were people who believed that his racial discrimination was wrong in Germany even though he was their leader, because they are human beings. Say: 52% of fast-food workers are on public aid programs in order to have a living.

Mean: Income for fast-food workers are generally not enough for people to make ends meet. Additionally, we, as taxpayers, have to give much of your money to public assistance programs for them to use.

Matter: This matters because people should know where their tax money is going to. Mike Sauter and Thomas C. Frohlich stated, "between 2010 and 2011, the percentage of adults with a college degree in the United States remained unchanged at 42%. Since 2000, the proportion of college graduates has grown at one of the slowest rates among developed countries. At the same time, the country continues to score worse than most developed nations in high-level math and reading skills" on Yahoo.com

Say: Mike Sauter and Thomas C. Frohlich is saying that students in the United States are scoring lower on Math and Reading tests than do students in other developed countries. They are also saying that the proportion of college graduates is growing at a slow rate compared to other developing countries.

Mean: This means that Americans are contempt with the percentage of adults with a college degree. They are not attempting any thing different to improve the percentage. This also shows that even though the United States is the most powerful nation in the world, it may not have the best education for its citizens.

Matter: This matters because education is very important. If less people are being educated, then less people are going to help the United States advance in technology, research, and weaponry. Since the United States is one of the super powers in the world, education should be one of its priorities. If America does not emphasize on education, then Americans will fall behind other countries and possibly lose its position as the most powerful nation in the world.

Say:

This says that people are easy to fall in love with someone, but it is very hard to really appreciate someone.

Mean:

My interpretation of this passage is that it means that when people are infatuated with other of opposite gender, they fall in love without caring about their personality or habits. However, they do not really like each other. It i love which makes them toleraate or ignore their shortcomings. However, once they break up, those shortcomings are no longer acceptable.

Matter:

This passage matters because it makess a difference between "love" and like. People usually cannot distinguish between the two. Sometime, when a pair falls in love, they think they are each other's worlds. However, if one is betrayed, one will be extremely angry and seek for revenge. Actually, we should not put love in the most important position since it is only a small part of our lives.

Matter: This quote matters because many people should realize that they should just be their true self and that would lead them to finding true friends.

Mean- It's never too late to try the things you've always wanted to do. Even though you aren't able to do the stuff you want, you can always dream about it.

Matter- We only live once so it's better to accomplish everything you wanted to do in the span of your lifetime. When you get to the point in life where you are sick or too old to do the certain thing, it'll be too late. That is why people set bucketlists. The point of a bucketlist is to set and write everything you want to do before your time is up and try to accomplish everything that is on that list. So dream on and live your life.

"It is the role of good journalism to take on powerful abusers, and when powerful abusers are taken on, there's always a bad reaction. So we see that controversy, and we believe that is a good thing to engage in." Julian Assage

Say: This quote is saying that with the power of journalism it can take on and exploit all the wrong and good in the world. Then it always results in a good or bad reaction. But with powerful journalism comes controversy and negative reactions.

Mean: The meaning of this is that words are powerful, they can question the most "powerful abusers" and trigger the most dark information about them and what they are doing. That's what makes journalism so controversial because with all that information there's always that bad reaction but that doesn't matter it's still releasing the truth that society needs.

This week's article is "Oregon man walking cross-country to honor his dead son gets killed on Colorado highway" on NBC News at http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/10/10/20905029-oregon-man-walking-cross-country-to-honor-his-dead-son-gets-killed-on-colorado-highway. This response is about that.

Say: The article says just that. In a tragic turn of events, a man walking for his dead son to raise awareness for him or to commemorate the tragedy -I don't know, and it isn't said- dies, run over by a truck. Incidentally, his son was killed by suicide, being bullied for being gay. I'm not going to explain how this magnifies the scope of the tragedy here. Now they are both dead. It is quite the calamity (and ironic). He was going cross country interacting with various youth to spread his message. He spoke about how he knew his pain and gave attention to the suffering of gay youths.

It also goes on to explain that accidents like these where people going across the world's highways for a cause get killed have happened before. (One event I found not in the article concerns someone who wanted to travel from Seattle to Brazil dribbling a soccer ball for charity who got killed similarly.)

Mean: This is quite a news event, if only because it is so shocking and terrible. As before, I won't try to explain why this is such a tragedy; it should be obvious. Its certainly a lamentable event, if nothing else.

Matter: One thing this tells us is that our highways aren't a safe place to be. His chances of getting hit must have been pretty large for such an unusual event to occur. And if other times it has happened it means it must occur quite frequently. It's no freak accident. Drivers on international highway systems must not be paying attention, being too tired or paying attention to their phones or worse. I do not know why they would be driving on the side of the road where they could hit someone or a parked car. This is unfortunate for us, because it makes them [highways] dangerous. This is a serious problem. Another takeaway is that having good intentions doesn't shield you from great misfortune. This is a more philosophical question that I won't deign to examine in detail, but hope isn't always answered fortuitously. Someone reading it might be struck by the stark realism of it all.

I don't really know what the lead up from this will be. It draws more attention to the cause of gay youth, certainly, despite the freak nature of it all. It loses a great advocate, but now people are exposed to his cause again.

“People who think dying is the worst thing don’t know a thing about life.” –The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd

SAY: This quote is said by the main character of the book, Lily Owens. She says this in her bed room, while thinking about her mother. This is just one of many instances where Lily demonstrates just how conflicted she really is due to her mother’s death when she was just four years old. The rawness of her thoughts are far more mature and complex than those of a normal teenager.

MEAN: Lily’s life has been profoundly affected by her mother’s death, especially at such a young age. She finds it difficult to live day by day thinking that it was all her fault. In her statement, she suggests that living with someone else’s death can be more painful that dying. Being dead means no pain, and that may be more of a relief than living and being sad and miserable, and feeling pain.

MATTER: This quote is important, because it reflects how sad and miserable Lily really is. It gives the reader the impression that she thinks sometimes life can be worse than death. This type of mentality is very troubling considering the fact that Lily is just fourteen. Fighting does not necessarily signal an end to the relationship, rather it strengthens the bond. If we do not tell our friends what are they doing that bother us and we hide the problems, those problems could worsen and soon destroy the friendship. Mean: Helping someone can be beneficial to them and everyone that that person meet.
Matter- This quote matters because it shows how helping someone can change their world. It can inspire people to help more people in our world.

"Be your own person because no one can take that away from you" - Austin Charlie
Say- Basically what he is saying is to be your self. To not care what people say about you. Just keep being you.
Mean - Now in days people like to say that they don't care what others think of them, but i think thats total bull. people do care what others think of them, they just don't like to admit it. but the best things in life is when you are being your self, not some fake. Don't let someone take away your natural personality, because in the end being yourself is what really matters.
Matter - sometimes they only person we can be is ourselves. imagine the world a better place when all everyone had to be is them self. not what others tell them to be. for the people going through tough times, imagine how many lives might not be taken. be your self. thats all anyone ever wants.

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” -Mahatma Gandhi
Say: Gandhi is telling us to cherish every moment of life as if it were the last. Even though life in finite, learning is infinite.
Mean: Life may be short and therefore we need to live like it'll be the end but knowledge is infinite and we should keep learning forever.
Matters: Everyone should not take granted of our everyday life because it all could end soon and we need to cherish every moment of it. We should also keep learning more and more stuff because there's so much in the world, why not learn about it?

"If you are prepared for the worst, the worst will be better" -Anonymous

Say: This is telling us that if you aren't prepared for the worst, then the worst will be very bad.
Mean: We should prepared for every little thing so that if anything happens, then it would hit us as hard because we are prepared.
Matters: We shouldn't take anything for granted because if you do, then what would happen when its gone and you're at your worst. Then you are not prepared for it at all.

John Green, in THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, wrote, "That's the thing about pain. It demands to be felt" (63).

Say:
The quote is very straightforward. Pain is not a physically-tangible feeling, like the five senses, but it IS a tangible feeling that we as living humans can feel and react to.

Mean:
Pain technically, like scientifically, is existent in our senses to warn us of danger and tell us that something's wrong and be careful. In the quote, it is taken into a very skeptical perspective. Pain is a feeling we all seem, or at least think we do, to not be able to escape and hide from. Augustus (character from the book) realizes this and notes that that's what pain does; it wants attention---it demands to be felt.

Matter:
This matters because pain is something we all can feel, but we all perceive slightly differently. The variation of how we feel pain is subsequent to how much attention we give pain. I like how Augustus points this out, nice and simple in just one sentence.

I don't even know what I was running for - I guess I just felt like it.
Chapter 1 (The catcher in the rye)

Say: this person like the feeling of working all the time, even he don't know what exactly he is doing, he just enjoy the feeling of it.

Mean: This quote means people are doing things all the time, sometimes they don't even know what they are doing for, they just keep working and working and never stops, some people are working whole life never stop. Some people clear understand what they are doing for but some don't .

Matter: This matters to me because I have to find out what is the reason for me to moving and moving. May be I just like the quote says, that I like the feeling of keep running. The sad things is what if I don't know, should I keep moving until I found a goal. It's important to found a goal in your life.

"A friend is someone who who knows you and loves you just the same." -Elbert Hubbard

Say: Friends will always be by your side and they know you for who you really are.

"If you believe in it and it makes you happy never stop fighting for it." -Anonymous

Say: If you find something that makes you happy and makes things easier to deal with and you believe in it, don't let anyone change your mind on it.

Mean: This quote means that you should never stop fighting for something you believe in. You shouldn't let others change the way you think or take away what makes you truly happy. Whatever makes you happy is worth keeping close to your heart because in tough times, those things will help you through the darkness and help you find that little light at the end of the long, dangerous tunnel.

Matter: this matters because so many people change their ideals and their ways to fit into what other people want. They want to be popular or cool and changing what they know to what they think will help them get to that cool level is one way they try to get to that place. It's all really a case of low self esteem. People change because they feel that they don't fit in, because they are different, and different is something people can't seem to accept. We all have to fit into some sort of a false bubble so that we are all "equal." But that can't be done when everyone fights to be number one in their little cliques. But if we stick to our guns and we believe what we want and like what we want, maybe others will start to do the same and when we all start to accept everyone for who they really are, maybe then we can finally be "equal."

“Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.” - Dr. Suess

Say:
What Dr. Suess is trying to say is that we shouldn't cry over things that happen such as a relationship, but be glad that it had happened instead.

Mean:
This means that we should smile instead of crying after bad things happen since we had the opportunity of it.

Matter:
This matters because people today tend to look at all the negatives instead of the positives.

“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” – Dr. Suess

Say: Be who you want to be because the people who matter to you won't mind what you have to say.

Mean: The people who care about you and matter in your life will accept you for who you are. They care about your opinions and won't mind listening to them.

Matter: This matters because we as people censor ourselves thinking that what we say will turn people off when in reality, those who actually matter and care, won't mind listening to what we have to say.

"If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude"

Say: When you don't like something, do your best to change it. Though our attitude about that particular thing you dislike.

Mean: This meaning is important. It shows a strong a person can be through just a self adjustment.

Matter: This really says a lot, because whether we enjoy the activity or not, depends a lot on our attitude. Our voice is the strongest thing we have. We must use it, and not just our minds. We speak constantly in our heads and no one ever speaks up.

"Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard."

Say: If you don't work hard, sooner or later, someone who is working harder than you will become better.

Mean: It means that someone who works hard will always prevail if someone doesn't, despite their talent. If you are talented, you should still continue to work hard because in the time that you are not practicing, there is someone out there working harder and improving themselves more than you are.

Matter: This matters to me because I saw this quote on a poster and it gave me a lot of inspiration. I continued to work hard on my sport and eventually I was able to improve my time significantly and surpassed many people during my race. Overall, this quote tells us to work hard because hard work will eventually prevail, whether it may be in the workplace, at school, or on the field.
