Post here each week about contemporary issues that intrigue you. Follow the close reading strategy of 1. What does the text say? 2. What does the text mean? 3. Why does the text matter?
PDF of SMM Explanation

6th Say, Mean, Matter post

10/21/2013

Say, Mean, Matter Discussion Forum—You will contribute one Say, Mean, Matter post online each week. You may choose the content of your post. Consider the following possibilities:

a.     Important newspaper articles, which you can find online or in a print newspaper

b.     Textual quotes from the literature you are reading

c.     Any contemporary issue that intrigues you

You will then analyze the content in terms of “What does it (whatever you chose) SAY?” This is a summary, so put the content into your own words.

The next section will be titled, “What does it MEAN?” This is an interpretation. This is where you determine what the content means. This is YOUR interpretation based on your background knowledge and your knowledge of the subject matter, etc.

The final section is the “What does it MATTER?” This is the implication piece. What are the possible outcomes? How will this content impact you, the community, the nation, the world? See columns below. There will be a sample SAY, MEAN, MATTER post online for you to consider while you compose your own. Your SMM post is due online each Friday at midnight.

Please use your first name and last initial and YOUR CLASS PERIOD. You will NOT receive credit if there is no class period listed.

Gregory Boyle, in TATTOOS ON THE HEART, wrote, "You stand with the belligerent, the surly, and the badly behaved until bad behavior is recognized for the language it is: the vocabulary of the deeply wounded and of those whose burdens are more than they can bear"(179). (This is cited in MLA format.)

Say:

This says that bad behavior is a way of communicating one's pain and that standing with the badly behaved is necessary until the pain is revealed and understood.

Mean:

My interpretation of this passage is that it means that when people act out and misbehave that they are doing so because they are in tremendous pain. Either they've been neglected and their own needs are not being met, or they have been abused or hurt in some way, or perhaps they've suffered a loss that is too big for them to bear. Instead of using their words about how much pain they're in, they act out by doing things that are inappropriate and often illegal (This is a book about gangs.)

Matter:

This passage matters because it offers an explanation for bad behavior and challenges us to see beyond the behavior to the heart of the matter. If we can do that, then we may feel more empathy, and as a result, be able to stick it out with those who are acting badly rather than quickly dismiss, judge and abandon them.

" Success makes so many people hate you. I wish it wasn't that way. It would be wonderful to enjoy success without seeing envy in the eyes of those around you. "
Marilyn Monroe

Say : This quote is saying about how when you are in the road of becoming someone successful, there are more haters.

Mean : This quote means that when you care becoming a success, there are going to be a lot of hatred against you. There are more people who envy you, who does not like you, even when you are doing nothing to hurt them or upset them in any way. But you sure are doing something for yourself, is to be someone successful and that helps no one but YOU. So they hate because they can't be someone like You, they can't be successful. But we should stand up for ourselves and not let that bother us, because we are who we want to be, and we live for ourselves. There's no need to mind about what other's say or think of us, because Success comes in different ways, when you find your way, stick to it and do not let anything get to you or change it.

Matter : This matter because to me because I could easily connect it to my own life. Especially Senior Year, I have a lot going through. Applying to colleges, getting all the credits needed to graduate, and keeping up good grades so I can graduate from Keppel with a bright future ahead of me. But it is not that plain and simple because there are always problems that are thrown in your way, struggles, and even sorrows come. But no matter what, it will only last for temporary, and it is all the matter of courage. The risk to continue no matter what, because I have come too far to stop now, and give up for any drama. I know what it is to get to the success road, and I will not let anything come in my way of reaching my goal.

In At A Younger Age, Mormon Women Are Eager To Share Their Faith, Stina Sieg writes, "According to the Mormon Church, the change was made to let young people begin missionary service earlier. And spokeswoman Cindy Packard says female missionaries, in particular, will help bring a more diverse group of people into the church."

Say: This quote says that younger people in the Mormon Church are beginning the ministry, and this change is due to an attempt at trying to bring in a stronger diversity of people to the church.

Mean: This quote means that the Mormon Church are trying to find new ways to lure more people to get to know their religion. They have turned to the new generation of kids who they think will have a stronger influence in bringing in people.

Matter; This matters because a strong pattern of getting teenager missionaries will most likely develop. The church knows that the main influence will come from the new/current generation of kids. With their help, they will be able to maximize their efforts in ministering to people. An interesting thing that could be observed for future references is if other religions have a surge in young adult missionaries.

"If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude." -Maya Angelou

Say: This quote says that if there is something people dislike about, they should try to change these things. If these things can not be change, then there must be something that cause them to be rude because they should change their attitude.

Mean: The quote means that people should change their attitude before they think that the things they dislike will change by themselves without doing any thing.

Matter: The quote matters because it shows that people often think that there was not thing wrong about themselves to cause them to dislike something. While the truth is that their attitude is what cause them to dislike stuff. People needs to change their attitude before they have the ability to change others or other things.

“Accept responsibility for your life. Know that it is you who will get you where you want to go, no one else.” – Les Brown

Say: Take charge in your life and follow your dreams

Mean: Don't wait for someone else to come and lead you to your destination, do so yourself, you are the person who needs to take charge.

Matter: This should matter to everyone who waits for other people to come in and tell them what to do with their life. They need to come up with their own plan and get their themselves, or they will not truly succeed.

"Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment." - Buddha

Say: This is saying that we should not always think about the past and the future likewise. Thinking about this will only make our current ambitions and life goals hard. We must think about the present in order to truly succeed in the past and future.

Mean: This means that if we truly want to be successful we need to work hard. But we must not think greatly on the past or future. Thinking about the present is what truly matters at the moment. We should not dwell on the past and future.

Matter: This matters because if we constantly dwell on this, then we are sure to crash. We are given a life to live and enjoy. In order to truly enjoy and live it, we must be happy for ever thing this happening to us. Especially if it is happening in the present, that is when it matters the most.

"Change your thoughts and you change your world."
-Norman Vincent Peale

Say:This quote says that with our thought shared we can change the world.

Mean: The Quote means that we as people have to share our thoughts in order to change the world. This way we can improve our world with out knowledge and we can make an effort to change things.

Matter: This should matter because sharing thoughts would be a great compliment if we are able to work together and create a better society.

"... if you know what you’re worth, then go out and get what you’re worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody." --Rocky Balboa

Say: This quote states that if you want to be successful then you have to go out and get it, and stop making excuses

Mean: The quote means that you need to be responsible for your own success and to stop blaming others for your mishaps or misfortunes that may arise while pursuing your goals.

Matter: This matters to me because every time when someone doesn't do something right, on time, or whatever the case might be. They tend to blame others for it because it's never the persons fault. This quote says be responsible for your own success and do everything in your power to make sure you achieve your goals even if you get "hit" in the process.

Scott Sonner said, “The 12-year-old student who opened fire on a Nevada middle school campus, wounding two classmates and killing a teacher before he turned the gun on himself, got the weapon from his home, authorities said Tuesday” on Yahoo News.

Say: A teenager who killed his teacher also wounded two classmates and killed himself on a Nevada middle school campus. Authorities are saying that he got the weapon from his parents.

Mean: Authorities still do not know what the 12-year-old’s motive was to kill the teacher and wound two other students. Other questions that still remain are, how did he get the gun from his parents? Was there anyone else involved? Why was he so anger? What caused a 12-year-old to be so angry?

Matter: This matters because this happened less than a year after the Newtown, Conneticut massacre. Parents are worried that the massacre might happen again at a different location. Others are concerned about how the 12-year-old got a hold of the weapon. Does this mean there should be greater gun control? This incident raises many concerns that are becoming controversial.

"Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming" - John Wooden

Say: Success comes from what you know that you are cable of doing.

Mean: Focusing on being our best gives us back our power. We have control over ourselves, our behavior, our effort.

Matter: It matters because everyone needs to know that they are capable of doing anything if they set their mind to it. They should not just give up because they think they can not do it.

Say: Lebron wants to be a mysterious superhero like Dwight Howard(Superman).

Matter: LeBron might be the best basketball player right now, but he is definitely not the smartest.

"Stories are people. I'm a story, you're a story...your father is a story. Our stories go in all direction, but sometimes, if were lucky, our stories join into one, and for a while, were less alone." Jess Walter, Beautiful Ruins
Say:
Each person has their own lives that are stories. Even the people that you are closest to have different stories that dont involve you at all. But when they do involve you, and your lives come into contact, life is less lonely for the both of you.
Mean:
One often forget that even the peole closest to them have parts of their lives that dont involve them at all, hence the different, intertwining stories. And even if they seem like they'll always be in your life, everyone else has their own story that all end. However, the moments when the stories come together, or the moment when people come into your lives, make everything less lonely and worth it.
Matter:
Every person is their own story, and therefore, untimatly, is alone in the world. The way to truly not be alone, is to make connections with people around us and those whose stories come into contact with ours.

"Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life" –Steve Jobs

SAY:
People should live their own lives and try not to be someone else.

MEAN:
People are becoming more influenced by others instead of have their own individuality. They need to learn to be themselves instead of copying others.

MATTER:
Everyone is suppose to have their own personality and be themselves but people are starting to be influenced by their peers and the environment around them. This causes people to do bad things or act differently. People should spend more time learning about themselves instead of studying others to be just like them because life is too short to be anyone but yourself. Before you know it, you'll look back and wonder why you did certain things or why you said certain things because that's not you. Dont let that happen and just be yourself.

Don’t wait. The time will never be just right. –Napoleon Hill

Say: The right time is now , you should not wait.

Mean: One should never wait, the time to act upon yourself is now. TIme is limited, so take advantage of it instead of waiting,

Matter: Some of our great leaders took actions, they do not want to be the man who waited and see. They took actions and risks and ended up with a valuable outcome. For example if one were to ask a girl to homecoming, he would not wait for another person to ask her, he should stand up and ask before she says "yes" to another man.

Mean: My interpretation of this quote is that it means that if you don't get out and take the risks or go for what you want, you'll never do anything.

Matter: This happened to me all the time. When some difficult problems appeared, I always said:"I can't do it." and then my dad would have blame on me because I didn't even try it. Therefore, we need to believe and try our best to be success.

Albert Einstein, said, "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

Say:

This says that it is very insance to doing the same thing repeatedly and hope to have a different result out of that.

Mean:

My interpretation of this passage is that it means that most people do not like the state they are living or what they have. Therefore, they keep doing the same thing but expect a better life. However, they have never thought about a different way to change their habits or actions. It is impossible to get a better result without contributing more and keeping changing at the same time.

Matter:

This passage matters because it offers an explanation for the commen misunderstanding of some people. They think they have tried to improve their situation, but actually they just repeat their mistakes again and again and still hope to get something better. It is very important to make them notice the insanity behind this. Otherwise, they will always accompany with failure.

Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.
-Abraham Lincoln

Say : Character is compared to a tree. Reputation is compared to a shadow. People always think of their reputation rather than the real thing.

Mean :
The tree is what we are and the shadow is how people think of us. People tend to acknowledged what the others think of them rather than who they really are.

Matter :
People care about their reputation. They would do anything to have a good reputation, even if it means that they have to pretend, they would do such thing rather than being the real them.

Jay Asher in, Thirteen Reasons Why, wrote "No one knows for certain how much impact they have on the lives of other people. Oftentimes, we have no clue. Yet we push it just the same.”

Say: This says that people do not understand how much they can affect another person and that we do not know that we are affecting them.

Mean: My interpretation of this quote is that people do not realize how much of an impact they can be towards other people. People really never really think about that and so we continue living our lives treating others the same.

Matter: This quote matters because some people may be going through a tough time and they could be needing your support. The way you are to another person can make an enormous impact. That is why people need to be careful on what they say and they need to start realizing the impact they have on others or else people can get hurt.

Matter: This quote can be used for any aspect of life. If you want a great job you go through hell in school to get a great job. If you want to be the best in a sport you cannot take it easy and be the best. Michael Jordan practiced the hardest and became the best basketball player ever.

Say: It's saying you should experience what the other person is experiencing before you criticize them.
Mean: It means that if you really want to criticize someone, you should take into consideration their feelings, and whether or not you will hurt them.

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined. -Henry David Thoreau
Say-
This quote just says go for what you want and love. The only thing you should do is live life to the fullest and the way you want to live.
Mean-
I think the quote means that you have to know what you want in life. However, once you know what you want in life, you have to go for it with no regrets and fight for it. Also, you have to live what you want and not what other people
Matter-
Many people now just don't do what they want and love. If they could choose, they would pick different paths instead of the ones they are on now. People have to be proud of what they want to do in order for them to be able to do it in the future.

MEAN:
It means that no matter how little impact the positive things you do will have, it is important that you do them.

MATTER:

"Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared." - Budda

SAY: Just by sharing the happiness of one person, thousands of others can feel the same joy, without the first person feeling any less happy.

MEAN: You should not be afraid to spread joy to other people; it won't have a negative effect on your own happiness. A wide spread happiness is always better than a small bit of happiness.

MATTER: People today are not appreciating the small happiness of everyday matters and are focused only on themselves. If one person can spread their happy feelings to a thousand others, what would happen when a thousand people each share their happiness as well? Our society would be even better if people were willing to share good things with others, especially when it won't cost them anything to do so.

Kurt Cobain" Yeah. You know I felt so different and crazy that people just left me alone. I always felt like they'd vote me, most likely to kill everyone at high school dance. You know?" July 22,1993.

Say: What this says is that Cobain in his high school years, was a one of kind of a guy. He was so different that people just left him alone.

Mean: This means to me that each person in this universe who stands out, or is a strong individual is left on their own and people then get all these negative, weird ideas about them.

Matter: This means so so so so much to the world. That it is an extremely important thing to be an individual and have no fear in doing it. That if we let people continue to have fear of those individuals, then those individuals end up being lonely, paranoid, and have psychological problems with connecting with the world in the long run. Ninety-nine percent of the failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses.

-George Washington Carver

Say: it says that everybody blames somebody else for their own mistakes

Mean: it means that not one person, will ever take fault for their own blunders, and that they will always take the easy way out and blame somebody else and watch them take the fall for them.

Matter: it matters because in our generation today, everybody relies on one another whether for good or for bad, but in the end there is always one person who blames everybody for his or her own bad decisions that lead him or her into trouble.

Say: Not all changes are improvements of oneself.

Mean: Although a person has changed, it does not solely mean that a person has gotten better. It could also mean that the person has changed for the worse. Just like how moving can be moving forward as well as moving backwards.

Matter: This matters because the world is changing at such a fast pace. We must stop and think if the change that we are making is positive or negative. We must look beyond the mere sense of just simple change and look at the impact, both to ourselves and to the people around us.

"True friends stab you in the front." -Albert Camus

SAY: Friends who are loyal to you stab you in the front instead of the back.

MEAN: Your true friends stab (touch) you in the front, where your heart is, making you feel special and glad that you know you can call them a friend. People who aren't true to you may cause some damage and hurt you from the back where you won't be able to see what happens.

MATTER: This matters because you have to see who you will be able to trust and depend on. If you don't choose the right person, you might get yourself into trouble. That is why friends are an important role in your life. They know what you can and cannot handle. They know what you like and dislike and vice versa. Friends are there when you hit rock bottom, they are there when you make memories. Friends are just people you should be grateful for. Matter: It is okay to make mistakes as long as you learn from them. If we make mistakes but never do anything to prevent from that mistake to happen again, then we never learned anything. “Better to be slapped with the truth than kissed with a lie.”
-Russian Proverb

Say: Its better to be told the truth and know about it sooner than being told a lie and having it get a lot worse later on because even though one seems better than the other now, it wont be the same later on for future effects.

Mean: To me this means that some people don't really know how much better it is to be told the truth even though it hurts. A lie might be comforting now, but later on it'll just grow into something more and be the absolutely opposite of comforting.

Matter: It matters to me because I feel like people should be aware of this. They act like the know already, but nobody can really handle the truth anymore these days and I feel like this is something that we really need to work on. Mean: Your memories are things that you have to cherish. Sometimes, you'll never be able to relive the moments that eventually accumulated to form who you are.

Matter: At the moment, people might not believe that they'll ever need to worry about missing what's happening, but from experience, I know many things change abruptly that leave you wanting to experience past events over again. quote:"Don't take life too seriously. You'll never escape it alive anyway."-unknown
This quote states that life should never be taken too seriously because in the end, we all have one final destination and that is death.
Mean: The fact that it states we all die sounds cynical but it is the truth and the only way we can look at it on the brighter side is by living life to the fullest. This quote doesn't mean not to take life seriously at all it's simply saying not to take it too seriously because then there will never be enough room for happiness.
Matter: This quote matters because sometimes, even the students in high school, take their academics too seriously and they can never have room for a little time for fun or relaxation. This in turn stresses them out and causes distress. On the other hand, some people do not take life seriously at all therefore it may cause a bad trail for their career.

The article I'm choosing to write on this week is "Black teen sues over arrest after buying $350 designer belt" on MSN news, the first place where I heard of it.

Say: The article describes an incident where a black dude was wrongly arrested. The story behind this is that he bought a $350 dollar belt (quite a luxurious sum).at some high class place. He was apprehended shortly after by the police and arrested. They ran the full gamut on him, handcuffing him and sending him to jail not believing his totally valid ID and identification..

The store chain argued presumably through its managers that they weren't the ones to alert the police but this is unlikely. The police asked how he could buy such an expensive belt, giving that as a reason for why they were putting him in such a predicament. The store likely also has some responsibility in this and any consequence would likely involve them too.

The guy saved up for the belt with what could be guessed to be great personal deliberation, but ultimately he returned it despite being allowed to keep it citing that he wanted nothing to do with it. He's suing though.

He's about 19, goes to college, though likely not a prestigious one considering his grammar but I dunno. This incident happened in New York. The arrest was foreshadowed by the store asking for his ID... although these last few facts likely have little significance considering New York is considered a liberal locale.

Mean: The situation implies that he was only punished because he was black and it was unexpected that he would purchase such an expensive belt. Clearly they apprehended him on suspicion of illegal activity which is appropriate or insane depending on how you approach this and whether you agree with the imagined attitude of the police officers or him most people would side with him I think). Surely this would not be the first time a black person committed some type of fraud but giving the argument weight entirely because of that could be argued garbage. It is almost certain that the lawsuit will have some follow-through.

Also news-worthy racism in our modern world, by the government no less. homgwtfbbq.

Matter: Clearly this incident shows that even in this age racism and suspicion because someone is young can boil over into explosive situations. We can all learn from this to take greater care in the future to combat the forces of racism and suspicion. And not get sued. Yeah, that's all I got. kk ttsysl

Mean: We afraid to change because we do not know what the result would turn out. However, even though we are afraid, we should understand that some changes can be good for us.

Matter: This quote matters because many of us make goals -- listing the stuffs that we want to achieve in life. However, sometimes things do not always go according to the plan. For instance, some students who are starting college already know what they want to major in and what career they want. However, they might later realize that they do not like their major anymore, and want to pursue a different one. It can be frightening because of the changes, and they do not know if they have enough money to cover another year or so of tuition, or if they want to stay another year or so in college. Say: If you don't make mistakes, then you aren't doing anything. Just try, do something.

Mean: Its good to make mistakes. It shows that you are making the effort to try and accomplish something. Not everyone succeeds in everything, which is why when you make mistakes, it shows that you are doing something.

Matter: This matters because not everyone is perfect, so there will always be mistakes. When you make a mistake, it shows that you are trying to accomplish something and succeed in whatever you were doing.

"The other kids, they think I'm weird. But I don't wanna be, I wanna be normal. I have to try and be a whole person before its to late." -Carrie White in the movie Carrie

SAY: She is saying that she wants to be like all the other kids.

MEAN: She is aware that the other kids don't view her as "normal" and she wants to be like them. She just wants to be accepted.

"It's always in the last place you look"

Say
It's always in the last place you look

Mean
Whatever you lost, when you find it, it's going to be in the last place that you looked because you won't be looking for it anymore.

In the Great Gatsby, Daisy once said "I hope she’ll be a fool—that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool."

Say
Daisy speaks these words in as she describes to Nick and Jordan her hopes for her infant daughter. She hopes her daughter will be like a beautiful, naive doll.

Mean
Daisy describes her own boredom with life and seems to imply that a girl can have more fun if she is beautiful and simplistic.

Matter
While not directly relevant to the novel’s main themes, this quote offers a revealing glimpse into Daisy’s character. Daisy is not a fool herself but is the product of a social environment that, to a great extent, does not value intelligence in women. The older generation values subservience and docility in females, and the younger generation values thoughtless giddiness and pleasure-seeking.

"When it comes to dreams, one might falter, but the only way to fail is to abandon them." -Dracula

Say: You can make mistakes and stray away from your dreams, but the only way to truly wrong them is to leave them completely.

Mean: You can always make mistakes and falter when you are trying to achieve something but you can't completely wrong them. You can lose your way and find it later and continue on the journey of your dreams. Doing all those things only makes the road longer and harder, but they do not cause the road to completely disappear. The only way that the road will completely disappear is for you to dismiss it and totally forget it.

Matter: This matters because some people may assume that if they falter with their dreams, they have automatically failed them. And because of that, they give up on their dreams. But that should not be so. They should continue trying because they can continue to work for what they want to achieve. It will take some time, but nothing worth doing is easy or quick, now is it?

“In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on.” -Robert Frost

SAY: In this quote, Robert Frost is trying to say that if he has learned one thing in life, it’s that life goes on. This is a reflection of the idea of “carpe diem” and the fact that you must always keep moving forward.

MEAN: This quote is basically trying to say that life never stops. It never stops to regret yesterday, or does it falter for fear of tomorrow. It’s just a way of saying live by the day, do not fear life, and go with the flow. Whatever happens to you, whether you pass or fail, loose or win, or if you want to be happy or sad, it will not really affect your survival, since life just moves on and never stops for anybody.

MATTER: This quote matters because life does go on. And the life that goes on must be lived to the fullest. The life ahead of you has as many mysteries and miracles as the life behind. There will be opportunities for laughing and loving and new success and deep fulfillment. The fact that this is hard to believe while your heart hurts and your eyes are blinded by the tears of despair doesn't change the fact. It is truly possible that the best is yet to come.
