8th Say, Mean, Matter Post

Say, Mean, Matter Discussion Forum—You will contribute one Say, Mean, Matter post online each week. You may choose the content of your post. Consider the following possibilities:

a. Important newspaper articles, which you can find online or in a print newspaper

b. Textual quotes from the literature you are reading

c. Any contemporary issue that intrigues you

You will then analyze the content in terms of “What does it (whatever you chose) SAY?” This is a summary, so put the content into your own words.

The next section will be titled, “What does it MEAN?” This is an interpretation. This is where you determine what the content means. This is YOUR interpretation based on your background knowledge and your knowledge of the subject matter, etc.

The final section is the “What does it MATTER?” This is the implication piece. What are the possible outcomes? How will this content impact you, the community, the nation, the world? See columns below. There will be a sample SAY, MEAN, MATTER post online for you to consider while you compose your own. Your SMM post is due online each Friday at midnight.

Please use your first name and last initial and YOUR CLASS PERIOD. You will NOT receive credit if there is no class period listed.

Gregory Boyle, in TATTOOS ON THE HEART, wrote, "You stand with the belligerent, the surly, and the badly behaved until bad behavior is recognized for the language it is: the vocabulary of the deeply wounded and of those whose burdens are more than they can bear"(179). (This is cited in MLA format.)

Say:

This says that bad behavior is a way of communicating one's pain and that standing with the badly behaved is necessary until the pain is revealed and understood.

Mean:

My interpretation of this passage is that it means that when people act out and misbehave that they are doing so because they are in tremendous pain. Either they've been neglected and their own needs are not being met, or they have been abused or hurt in some way, or perhaps they've suffered a loss that is too big for them to bear. Instead of using their words about how much pain they're in, they act out by doing things that are inappropriate and often illegal (This is a book about gangs.)

Matter:

This passage matters because it offers an explanation for bad behavior and challenges us to see beyond the behavior to the heart of the matter. If we can do that, then we may feel more empathy, and as a result, be able to stick it out with those who are acting badly rather than quickly dismiss, judge and abandon them.

"When you see children, you know, I mean, it's great. Because everything that you know about life and all the suffering, all the pain that you might be experiencing even then, it kind of reverts to how fresh, you know, and how precious innocence can be."
― Makoto Fujimura

Say: When we look at children, all the things we know about life and the bad expriences that we experience goes back to how fresh and innocent it was as a child.

Mean: Looking at children can make us refresh our views about all the things that we know about life and the bad experiences we went through. It shows how precious and refreshing innocence is.

Matter: It matters because as we grow older and experience more things in life, we forget how things use to be. We forget things like how being happy about the smallest things. We become blind because of the bad things that happen to us.

“Only a life lived for others is worth living”
- Albert Einstein

Say: What this quote is saying is that a life must be live based on others, so that it will be a life worth living.

Mean: What this quote mean is that we should live our life based on others, not only ourselves. Because then we become selfish, and living in a selfish world. In order to realize how precious and meaningful life really is, we should live based on others. For example, do something that will benefit other people, not only yourself. Be the change. Make a difference.

Matter: This quote matters because most of the time, our life is basically about ourselves. To get the most sharpened pencil when the teacher gives you a bunch of pencils and tell you to pass it back, to get the biggest chunk of a slice of cake, etc. We are living in a selfish world. Therefore, in order to change this, we should change the way we live our life so it will not be a waste of time. We should start thinking, "How will my actions affect others?" instead of " What am I going to get out of this?". By asking ourselves these simple questions, we are already progressing to make a change.

"Confidence should be the energy to push oneself to be humble."
- Chris Eom

Say: This is saying that confidence should not be the energy to be cocky or self-centered, but instead be the energy to help oneself to be humble.
Mean: Don't make a fool out of yourself using the energy from confidence to be conceited. Be humble because you will truly be overwhelmed by the maturity being received.
Matter: People have taken the confidence they obtained from compliments and achievements for misuse. The confidence have taken people into being extremely cocky, conceited, and so forth, but they don't realize they are million miles away from being humble. Let yourself be pushed with the energy of confidence to be humble, not cocky.

Say:Live in the present, don't think about the past or future
Mean: If you live in the moment and don't stay in the past or get ahead of yourself in the future, you will live a better life.

It is easy to sit up and take notice, what is difficult is getting up and taking action.
-Honore de Balzac
Say: The quote states that noticing is nothing when action is not taken
Mean: There are many problems in the world and many people don’t seem to notice them, but when they problems are noticed it’s as if knowing does nothing at all. If action is not taken to change problems around the world when why bother knowing.
Matter: As part of the community that we live in and how we affect the world as individuals it is our responsibility to take action instead of knowing about the problems that affect us and not doing anything about it.

matter: this matters because many people focus on wealth thinking its the most important thing in this world when its not. Its better to be known as somone who did something good then of success.

"The most important thing is to enjoy your life - to be happy - it's all that matters" -- Audrey Hepburn

SAY: All that matters in life is that you are happy and enjoying yourself.
MEAN: People are so concerned about other matters that they forget to stop and be happy about living life. They prioritize other things before their own happiness, when in reality, their OWN happiness should be the most important.
MATTER: Happiness plays a huge part in our lives. It affects us in everything we do, and how well we can do it. People with a positive attitude and who enjoy life as it is feel better about themselves. Happiness is important to your health, but people tend to underrate the value of being happy with their life.

Mike Krumboltz wrote “Following the suicides of two male students last week, classmates at Brunswick High School near Cleveland took steps to ensure that each student hear something positive about themselves” on Yahoo News.

Say: This says that students at Brunswick High school tried to do something positive for the whole school.

Mean: Because there were two suicides last week, students at Brunswick High School adorned Post-it notes with simple statements of positivity and compliment. Little compliments such as "You are loved," "You are important," and "You matter" will help make someone change his mind about suicide.

Matter: Nothing is more precious than the life of a human being. Sometimes teenagers feel overwhelmed by the pressures from home, school, and friends. We need to encourage these students to make quality friends. To prevent devastation, one just needs someone to listen to him. At Brunswick High School, students sent little messages, letting kids know that suicide should not be the answer to problems and should never be an option. This article was important because people need to know that they are not alone. There is someone out there who would be willing to talk to them.

Mean: We should try to minimize mistakes but we are all human and we cannot stop it from happening.

Matter: We are not perfect and we always make mistakes but we have to learn from them. If we made a mistake but learned nothing from it, we will continue to make the same mistake over and over again. We have to know it is acceptable to make a mistake but know that we have to learn from them.

Say: A person must be willing to throw away the life he has in his mind, a life ideal to that person, to have the life that is actually ahead of him. The life he does not know he has.

Mean: To be able to get the life that is waiting for us, and not necessarily the life we are expecting, we must to able to give away the one we are living in our current moment. What we are living now is only the beginning chapter, our prologue in our life, if you will. We are warming up and getting ready for a better, more individual life that awaits. We may not know what is to come or who or what is going to bring it, but we have this whole middle section in our book of life we just have to keep turning the pages until we finally end the prologue and get into the fascinating middle.

Matter: This matters because so many people think that what they have now is forever. They think that the bad that they have now is not going to get better or that the good they have might not turn into bad. But the future is unknown. We have no idea what rock we are going to turn over and what is going to come crawling out from under it. But all we need to know it that things can get better if it's bad now and things can go south if they're good. But you can't just keep going down forever. It's like reverse gravity. What goes down must come up. So we can't dwell on what we have now. Because it is going to most definitely change. The question is when.

Mean: That because today is a great day, tomorrow is just another day that could be great as well. The fun isn't only consisted in one day.

Matter: As simple as this quote is, Dr. Seuss tells us that everyday could be a great day. We should always look forward to tomorrow, and live in the moment of today. We should have fun today, but fun doesnt need to end after one day. It should be extended to tomorrow and the day after tomorrow - we just have to make the most of our days.

"Follow your bliss" - Joseph Campbell

SAY: Following your bliss means to do whatever, in this moment, brings you into a sort of alignment with your true nature. It's also trying to say to follow your purpose, your passion, that message you have deep inside your heart.

MEAN: These three words are a helpful guide to the individual along the hero journey that each of us walks through life. It means being present and fully alive, even when that hurts. It means knowing yourself as the hero in the grand story of your life. This quote is kind of a reflection of the concept of carpe diem.

MATTER: This quote matters to me, because it lets me know that you are responsible for giving your own life meaning, and that you shouldn't waste it with activities, beliefs, or people that don't help you fulfill that purpose. There is a big difference between following your head and following your heart. Following your head is basing your life on your own effort, work, and belief. Following your heart, however, will put you on the path of self discovery, using your talents in order to find yourself and give your life meaning.

"The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark. -Michelangelo
SAYS: People are not afraid to fail but more afraid to reach the mark of failure itself.
MEAN:We should not actually be afraid of setting high goals for ourselves because its better than reaching a low goal.
MATTER:People often set low goals for themselves because they think it will be easier and quicker to reach, meaning that they wil not feel the negativity of not reaching a bigger more daunting goal.

"Listening moves us closer, it helps us become more whole, more healthy, more holy. Not listening creates fragmentation, and fragmentation always causes more suffering."
Say: Listening can bring people closer
Mean: Listening can bring happiness
Matter: People want to tell their stories, so if we can listen them carefully, they will feel satisfied, and both of us will improve our relationships.

No man will make a great leader who wants to do it all himself or get all the credit for doing it.
-Andrew Carnegie

Say: For a person to be a great leader, he must not keep his work to himself and instead, influence others to be apart of his work and to expand on his ideas.
Mean: Don't be so introvert. Branch out to others and more help will come your way.
Matter: This is a great quote for people who do want to get started as an entrepreneur or is going to start a business just as Carnegie did a century ago. People can learn from the best and also to expand on their ideas.

“You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.”
― Mae West

SAY:It says that you live once, and that once is enough to fulfill it.

MEAN: This means that if you live your live the way you want it, you won't have any regrets and wished you live your life again.

MATTER: This mattersw because to may people regret that they didnt live their live to its fullest. It matters because if you live your life up, you won't want to live it again due to the lack of not living it the first time.

I know it is late but in any case of course I feel obliged to do it anyway, don't I? I'm not sure when you told us about this but per the 405 or whatever it is called I think I should be able to turn this in late and get credit anyway, especially if it was just because I was too distracted to pay attention. I know its cheap but its really necessary. :( I know I didn't hear it.

If you ever wondered just how occluded science journals have gotten I have news for you. If you ever wondered how silly a professorial job has gotten have I got news for you...

As you might have expected from this opening, the news I am doing a report on is very interesting for those who've ever cracked open a science journal (or found one through Google Scholar) and gotten mentally swamped by how thick the wordiness on it is. In fact, if you ever thought that it is unnecessarily difficult for even mentat professionals to make sense of it you might be right. As it turns out, it is in fact possible to have come across a fraud which has had its true worth hidden behind inaccessible language. Let me introduce you to the world of the sham science journal piece.

This analysis comes courtesy of Fox News for once, who at least have brought it through Google News to my attention. The article I am sourcing this from is "Over 100 published science journal articles just gibberish" at http://www.foxnews.com/science/2014/02/28/over-100-published-science-journal-articles-just-gibberish/.

Say: Well, someone has actively cross-referenced science journals to search out meaningless gibberish and he has found at least 120 from those that have come under his scrutiny. This is from supposedly peer-reviewed journals (as most science journals are) where articles are checked by those in the field. How anyone got it through is not really explained in detail, but it should be obvious what is implied. It gives at least, the researcher's response that people are not actually reading it. Why would anyone try to fake it, you ask? Apparently nowadays professors are judged based on the volume of papers he or she puts out. This is just from papers published over the past few years. The researcher pins the blame on slipping standards among scientists. The subject articles have been discovered in the especially difficult hard science computer math fields. According to the article, the papers have been generated randomly, from an algorithm. The researcher has released his own that tries to detect such fraud.

Mean: As you may have experienced and I certainly have we know that science journals have been written very demanding to read. To my knowledge this is intentional, a by-product of the "high standards" of people and learning which publish in these things. This makes the learning they have built on, which is similarly important, more inaccessible however. Its even more difficult than it has to be for a layman to use it and even fellow scientists have a harder time as well.

Matter: Although this is not likely to happen, perhaps it is time for academic paper writers to stop hiding behind walls of adulterated text so everyone knows just how sophisticated they are just so the articles they write are at least comprehensible. Such adulteration (or habitual hard word usage and confusing sentence structure if not) means that the system can be cheated. This might seem strange since you would think those that it interests would understand it, but as this proves, apparently not.

Hey scientists, subscribe to this cause and make your papers simpler plz. can you hear me?

Say:“Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.”
― Oscar Wilde
Mean: This means that you should always try to forgive your enemies. Even though forgiving is done in an act of good will, it gives you one final chance to get back at the enemy by being the more controlled person and it annoys them.
Matter: This matters because forgiving is a good decision but it is hard to make. By telling people that it annoys their enemy which is true in some cases, it gives the person an incentive to be more forgiving.

" Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all" -Hellen Keller

Say: You risk your life into evrything or it's not meaningful.

Mean: Either you go forward and make your life as an adventure or you make your life boring, and just live the way people tell you to live it.

Matter: This matters because people is too scared to move out of their comfort zone. They live the life of what they are expected to live and it leads to a very boring life. If you live your life in a daring way your life could be interesting and you can try all things.
