Say, Mean, Matter Discussion Forum—You will contribute one Say, Mean, Matter post online each week. You may choose the content of your post. Consider the following possibilities:

a.     Important newspaper articles, which you can find online or in a print newspaper

b.     Textual quotes from the literature you are reading

c.     Any contemporary issue that intrigues you

You will then analyze the content in terms of “What does it (whatever you chose) SAY?” This is a summary, so put the content into your own words.

The next section will be titled, “What does it MEAN?” This is an interpretation. This is where you determine what the content means. This is YOUR interpretation based on your background knowledge and your knowledge of the subject matter, etc.

The final section is the “What does it MATTER?” This is the implication piece. What are the possible outcomes? How will this content impact you, the community, the nation, the world? See columns below. There will be a sample SAY, MEAN, MATTER post online for you to consider while you compose your own. Your SMM post is due online each Friday at midnight.

Please use your first name and last initial and YOUR CLASS PERIOD. You will NOT receive credit if there is no class period listed.

SEE MODEL  SAY, MEAN, MATTER POST BELOW!

Gregory Boyle, in TATTOOS ON THE HEART, wrote, "You stand with the belligerent, the surly, and the badly behaved until bad behavior is recognized for the language it is: the vocabulary of the deeply wounded and of those whose burdens are more than they can bear"(179). (This is cited in MLA format.)

Say:

This says that bad behavior is a way of communicating one's pain and that standing with the badly behaved is necessary until the pain is revealed and understood.

Mean:

My interpretation of this passage is that it means that when people act out and misbehave that they are doing so because they are in tremendous pain. Either they've been neglected and their own needs are not being met, or they have been abused or hurt in some way, or perhaps they've suffered a loss that is too big for them to bear. Instead of using their words about how much pain they're in, they act out by doing things that are inappropriate and often illegal (This is a book about gangs.)

Matter:

This passage matters because it offers an explanation for bad behavior and challenges us to see beyond the behavior to the heart of the matter. If we can do that, then we may feel more empathy, and as a result, be able to stick it out with those who are acting badly rather than quickly dismiss, judge and abandon them.

"The Globalization of Eating Disorders” by Susan Bordo
" In today’s world, it is through images–much more than parents, teachers, or clergy–that we are taught how to be. And it is images, too, that teach us how to see, that educate our vision in what’s a defect and what is normal, that give us the models against which our own bodies and the bodies of others are measured. "

Say
Susan Bordo states that we are influenced by media, we are no longer taught who to be or how to be by out parents or those whom are supoosed to influence us. we are taught by pure images that are all around us.

Mean
The meaning of this is that as young adults we are influenced to be someone we aren't. It isn't just young adults, this is global and its affecting everyone from the young ages of 7 and on. The body of a person is now seen as something thst is either beautiful or ugly do to weight.

Matter
Media has had a large influence on the world, the idea of beauty has changed do to what we are shown as we grow. skinny is whatvis considered beautiful but its not abiut being skinny or a certain size its about being healthy. To certain extant skinny becomes to much. although the media encourages this outrageous behavior of men and women its come to far. The media advertises false bodys, so why do we feel the need to be something we aren't. Eating disorders have become nearly an epidemic causeing multiple deaths and it needs to stop.

In "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett, the character, Miss Skeeter, says to Aibileen, "I'm tired of the rules."

Say: Miss Skeeter and Aibileen discuss what is and what isn't against the rules in the segregated society that they live in, when AIbileen inquires about some books she would like to read soon. Aibileen mentions that she hadn't asked about the book rentals before because she wasn't sure which rules Miss Skeeter was following. To this, Miss Skeeter responds, "I'm sick of the rules."

Mean: In saying she is sick of the rules, Skeeter is saying that she is ready for change and is ready to step up to the plate for that change. In saying that she is sick of the rules, Skeeter is showing her protector characteristics and her empathy towards the colored people.

Matter: Because of the very strict status quo of Jacksonville, this is significant in that it begins to set the stage for the rest of the story. In saying she is tired of obeying the rules of society, Skeeter is laying out the foundation for her determination and dedication to both the publishing of the book as well as the future of the colored population. Skeeter is helping in remolding society and bringing one of the greatest changes of our nation to her segregated, hometown.

"The Globalization of Eating Disorders” by Susan Bordo says
"And with mass media culture increasingly providing the dominant “public education” in our children’s lives–and those of children around the globe–how can we blame families?"

Say: Susan Bardo says that mass media - the internet, the radio, the social networks - provide us with the education now. Education = influence our eating disorder. She says that it's the children from all over the world that is impacted with this negative mass media. And families aren't the blame.

Mean: Susan is discussing about the eating disorder now - the lifestyle some children choose because of the education learned from the social media. The negative, unnecessary education comes from possibly not the parents, nor our environment, but from social media. Parents - the usual influence for our children's behavior - aren't the one to blame anymore.

Matter: Because this lifestyle children follow from the media is becoming so common. Places that were thought to be remote and not influenced, such as Fiji, became just as a follower and adapted to new "culture". This is actually a large common problem in the United States currently. The media nowadays has the instructions on how to look, where to get the look, how to act, etc. Eating disorders have become a result of that, and numbers continue to pile up from all over the world.

Say: It's nice when someone's excited.
Mean: They have less stress on them, staying exciting meaning living the life.
Matter: People in the world should be all doing something exciting. It causes everyone in the world to stay happy which brings fewer death and sadness.

The stock market is a no-called-strike game. You don't have to swing at everything – you can wait for your pitch. The problem when you're a money manager is that your fans keep yelling, "Swing, you bum!"
"The Tao of Warren Buffett" (2006)

Say: What Warren Buffett is saying is that you don't have to swing at everything, wait for something good

Mean: Opportunity is everywhere, you just have to wait for the right one to come at you.

Matter: It matters because you shouldn't give into pressure, believe in yourself and wait for something you know is a wonderful idea and go with it.

In the article "How Bullying’s Effects Reach Beyond Childhood" by Alexandra Sifferlin, she wrote, "Studies document higher rates of anxiety and panic attacks among victims of bullying, and these are snowballing into mental health and behavior problems later in life. That could translate into unstable professional and personal lives as well; a recent study reported that bully victims are two times less likely to hold down a job and also have difficulty maintaining meaningful social relationships."

Say: People who are victims of bullying will have mental and behavior problems piling up on them when they grow older. This can affect their professional and personal life They will also have problems maintaining their job and social relationships.

Mean: Bullying can affect the future of a person greatly. It can damage their life then and later. Problems will pile up and cause problems such as being unable to keep their jobs and social relationships stable.

Matter: This matters because a lot of people out there gets bullied and it can harm their future. If it continues, there will be more people getting harmed as time goes by. They will also have to deal with their health.

In the article, Couple Finds 2,000-Year-Old Archaeological Treasures Under Their House, I read, "When Miriam and Theo Siebenberg purchased a plot of land for their new home in the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City that Israel had just a few years before captured from Jordan, they had no idea of the antiquity treasures dating back from Jesus' time and before that lay underneath."

Say: A couple who just purchased a land in Jerusalem found treasure under their house! This is something archaeologist have been trying to look for, but unfortunately haven't until this odd couple has! Who knows what can be under our houses?

Mean: This means that there is treasure all around the world! Even in our backyard! As long as we try to look, then possibly we can find something! There could be treasures for hundreds of years under our houses.

Matter: This matters because there are many unique things all around the world. If this can be found, then who knows what could be under our houses! It never hurts to look.

Susan Bordo, in THE GLOBALIZATION OF EATING DISORDERS, wrote, "In today's world, it is through images-much more than parents, teachers, or clergy-that we are taught how to be."

Say: Bordo is saying that in today's times, we are influenced by media than we are by our parents, teachers, or religious groups. We are being taught how to be by pictures that aren't reality.

Mean: I think Bordo means that people are comparing themselves to people whom they see as perfect. It is a global problem and it seems to be getting worst. People are comparing themselves to what they see in magazines, but what they don't see is all the work it takes to make the person in the photograph look "perfect".

Matter: It matters because the media is a big part of our life today. We see magazines, tv shows, and movies with people who are said to be beautiful and perfect. Usually, these people are tall, skinny, muscular, and lean. What people don't realize is that it isn't reality. It takes lots of time for models and movie stars to look that way and whenever they have an imperfection, it just gets airbrushed out. Unfortunately, we cannot do that in our everyday lives which means we need to learn to accept ourselves for who we are. Everyone is beautiful in their own unique way and we shouldn't try to look like what we see in the media. Be different and embrace the body you have.

In "The Book Thief" : "Then came the seventh side of the die. Two days after Germany invaded Russia. Three days before Britain and
the Soviets joined forces."

Say: I think that Death is trying to say that hiding a Jew is like gambling. The seventh side of the die came, something that is usually unexpected in a regular die, but it is something that is also foreseen. He also refers this to what is happening in Germany and Russia.

Mean: There are consequences to hiding a jew. Since The Hubermanns chose to hide a Jew, the life that they must live will be filled with unpredictability and bad luck. The reference to Germany and Russia represents this idea also. The invasion of Germany's "ally" is not unpredictable or bad luck at all because these are the consequences of being associated with "gambling".

Matter: This matters because it shows that there are consequences to almost everything that we do. Therefore, we must think about the consequences of our actions before we commence to do something. Although I respect Hans Hubermann's promise to take care of the Vandenburg family, I think that he should also think of how his choices would affect his family as a whole, before he commits to something.

Susan Bordo, in THE GLOBALIZATION OF EATING, wrote, "In today's world, it is through images-much more than parents, teachers, or clergy-that we are taught how to be."

Say:

This quote says that instead of learning the world from our parents, teachers, or clergy, we interpret this world by simply studying images.

Mean:

It means that traditionally, we listen to our parents who are our first teachers in life, our teachers who educate us, or our clergies who lead us to the right paths. However, this trend has been changed dramatically.

Matter:

We are living in the digital age which digits have conquered our minds. We believe in the world through the glorious images and choose to distrust the words from others. However, we always forget the fact that images can be beautified. In this case, we usually appreciate the "fake" pictures when the real scenes are just in front of us.

Susan Bordo, in THE GLOBALIZATION OF EATING DISORDERS, wrote, "In today's world, it is through images-much more than parents, teachers, or clergy-that we are taught how to be."

Say: Bordo is saying that everyone is so influenced by the media now a days and that their life is based on social media rather than living based on their parent's expectations. Teachers, adults, and as I mentioned parents do not influence the young generation anymore and what they say, do not matter.

Mean: Bordo means that people really spend most of their life keeping updated with the social media. They look up to the people who they think is perfect, but they do not see that it is not reality. All those perfections in a model, or artist, is all through the benefits of technology. Where photoshop exist to help hide flaws , and such. People waste their time trying to be someone they're not. They should worry about themselves, and the rest do not matter. You should stay true and proud of who you are . Never live up to someone else's expectations.

Matter: This matters because this generation involves a lot in social media. Starting from TV, shows, magazines, billboard signs, everything is based on social media. Even magazines now a days play a big role in this generation; they give out tips and tricks to look beautiful, how to look natural with make up, what to wear and what not to wear, to even how to lose weight in an easy way. There's no problem with keeping up with the latest fashion, but if you live your life on the daily basis based on the stars that you think is perfect and beautiful, then you're wrong. If we all look like Beyonce, or David Beckham, then there will be nothing unique about our individuality. This matters a lot because people need to realize that we do not live to other's expectations, or to be wasting time to be someone else. We should be grateful for our freckles, dimples, thick /slim body, curly/straight hair, and be proud of who we are and our own differences. We are all beautiful in our own ways.

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.”
-Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

SAY:
This quote tells us that we have to care, every single one of us, to make a difference.

MEAN:
If one person should think that he/she doesn't have to care or doesn't need to care, then nothing will ever get done. As individuals, it is our responsibility to have a positive impact. We can accomplish more as a group than we can by ourselves, but it all begins with changing our own mindset and being involved in our community.

MATTER:
Just like the story The Lorax, humans must care for the community and environment surrounding them. It only takes one person with a bright idea to speak up and create an organization that will gather many more individuals to change the way we care for our world. Starting with our local community, we can expand this project and eventually influence enough individuals to care for our world. All of this is possible, but unless someone begins to care, none of it will actually happen.

In the online article, “Brazil looks to break from US-centric Internet,” Bradley Brooks and Frank Bajak wrote, “President Dilma Rousseff ordered a series of measures aimed at greater Brazilian online independence and security following revelations that the U.S. National Security Agency intercepted her communications, hacked into the state-owned Petrobras oil company's network and spied on Brazilians who entrusted their personal data to U.S. tech companies such as Facebook and Google.”

Say:
President Dilma Rousseff is angered that the U.S. is secretly spying into the lives of Brazilians. She ordered some measures that aimed for Brazilian online independence and security from the U.S. National Secuirty Agency that hacked into Brazilians’ privacy.

Mean:
Brazil is angered by this espionage. Brazil is not proposing to ban its citizens from using U.S. web services, but it wants their information to be protected so that the nation has greater control over its internet use. This will also prevent the NSA from snooping around. “Brazil is now pushing more aggressively than any other nation to end U.S. commercial hegemony on the Internet” (Brooks & Bajak).

Matter:
Brazil’s decision to divorce itself from U.S.-centric internet will cause potentially dangerous first step toward fracturing a global network created with minimal government interference. National privacy will become a salient issue globally. Brazil’s effort to digitally isolate itself from U.S spying would be costly and difficult. It would encourage other nations to follow its steps; therefore, Silicon Valley could lose businesses and pay higher operating costs. This Brazilian decision sounds like a fair idea, but it can also encourage governments to seek greater control over the internet therefore crushing free expression at home.

Say: Pocahontas explains here that people think that everyone is alike, but if you looked at someone else's point of view, everything is different.

Matter: People nowadays don't care for others and need to consider their feelings.

Mean: Emerson means that you'll never know when it's too late to be kind to someone that matters.

Mean: If you want to go to somewhere, you need to do it, because no one will do it for you. Everyone works for themselves. So you better take care of what you want to do.

Orson Scott Card, in ENDER'S GAME, wrote, “‘I know what you’re thinking, you bastard, you’re thinking that I’m wrong, that Ender’s like Peter. Well maybe I’m like Peter, but Ender isn’t, he isn’t at all, I used to tell him that when he cried, I told him that lots of times, you’re not like Peter, you never like to hurt people, you’re kind and good and not like Peter at all!’” (148).

Say: Valentine is saying how much Ender is not like Peter

Mean: My interpretation of this passage is that it means that both Valentine and Ender understand how bad Peter is, but no one else does. Valentine is defending Ender because the general is comparing Ender to Peter. Ender is actually the complete opposite of Peter.

Matter: This passage matters because it helps us understand more about the character Peter and how much his brother and sister dislike him and are afraid of him. This also relates to reality and how siblings are always compared to each other. When one sibling makes a mistakes, adults tend to believe that the younger one will also do the same, but that's not true.

“Becoming fearless isn't the point. That's impossible. It's learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it.”
― Veronica Roth, Divergent

Say: The quote means that we will have many fears but we cannot always fall to our fears. So we should learn to control our fears instead.

Means: We will always have fear. It is impossible to not have fears because our fears are usually a limit or something we cannot stand which everyone has. However, we can learn to control our fear and not be so scared of it. This will also make us brave.

Matters: This matters because we can be brave and control our weaknesses when we have any. I fear not getting into college. So I try to do work toward my fear by taking an SAT class to help me better improve. I work to end my fear. I do not run away and not apply for college.

Marilyn Monroe said, "I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best."

Say:
This says that one might be bad in manner and make mistakes since no one is perfect. Other people do not deserve one's best aspect if they cannot accept one's worst aspect.

Mean:
My interpretation of this passage is that many people complain about other people's behaviors which they consider as inappropriate. However, no one is perfect. Even the most popular person will not receive appreciation from everyone in the world. Therefore, if you want to see the best of me, you have to accept the fact that I also have the worst side which most people do not appreciate.

Matter:
This passage matters because it tells us that we should not change ourselves in order to cater people around us. Everyone has his or her best and worst sides. No matter how hard we change, some people will still dislike us. Just to be yourself, people who appreciate you will always be there since they have accepted your worst side.

Virginia Woolf said, "Mental fight means thinking against the current, not with it. It is our business to puncture gas bags and discover the seeds of truth."

Say
This says that we have to think for ourselves and not just o what everyone else is doing. We have to break free from the bonds that hold us and think for ourselves.

Mean
I think this means that we have to stop following what society sets for us. If we had more innovative thoughts, we would be better. It is our duty to be able to think for ourselves no matter what is stopping us.

Matter
This can tie in with the video we watched this week. Its part of the solution. We have to be the first ones, the ones that do good to be surrounded by good. To break free from the hold that makes all of us listen and to start thinking for ourselves. We have to break free though, that is the first step.

“Start copying what you love. At the end of the copy you will find yourself”---- Yohji Yamamoto

Say
We should start imitate a person that we dream to become, or we should start copy what we like. After many times of imitating or copying, we will find ourselves developing our own style that derives from the original. Till then, we find ourselves.

Mean
Nobody is born with a style or voice. We don’t come to the world knowing who we are. In the beginning, we learn by pretending to be our heroes. We learn by copying. Copying is different from plagiarism. Plagiarism is trying to pass someone else’s work off as your own. Copying means practicing; we learn to write by copying down the alphabet. We learn from copying and eventually develop on our own.

Matter
Copying from our heroes – the people we love, the people we are inspired by, the people we want to be – allows us to see lie our heroes, so we try to get a glimpse into their minds to understand the way they look at the world. At some point, we will move from imitating our heroes to emulating them when we actually use their thinking in our own ways.

“Enormous crimes have been committed that can be traced directly to the highest levels of the Syrian regime.” – Stephen Rapp (as quoted by Olivier Know in his Yahoo! Article “U.S. war crimes ambassador: Assad ‘absolutely’ should be tried for war crimes”

Say: The Syrian government has committed serious international crime.

Mean: This means that the Syrian government should be punished for what they have done to their own people. And this can mean a serious threat to the international community.

Matter: The “crimes” refer to the chemical weapons used against the rebels, which also happened to be used on the Syrian people. Many men, women, and children were killed as a result of this. Who I am by Pete Townshend pg 168 " I couldn't get past the unshakeable feeling that there was a party going on somewhere to which I wouldn't be invited because I didn't take drugs and didn't feel at ease with groupies."

Says: Townshend was feeling very self conscience about himself because he wasn't following the usual social ways of a rock star back in the 1960's. He was following his own road, yet he was always worried that he wasn't cool enough and that's why he sensed there was some parties and gatherings going on he wasn't invited to.

Mean: This means that if you are a person who is following your own morals and not the crowd. You get this sense you are not cool or good enough for society and people don't want to spend as much of time with you. Because you are unique and different.

Matter: I feel like this matters because everyone goes through this feeling, that if you are not cool or following the mainstream culture or following the social norms you feel left out and alone. Then you worry if your doing is right. But to me it's a good thing because it teaches you how to be more independent, smarter and more successful.

In the online Article " Dairy Queen employee's honorable actions praised online"
SAY: "when a visually impaired customer accidentally dropped a $20 dollar bill at Hopkins, Minn. Dairy queen... the lady behind him just picked it up and put it in her purse, as if no one saw it."
MEAN: This passage comes to show how dishonorable some people can be. But the employee of the Dairy Queen confronted her about it and seeing that the lady denied she had ever taken anything he kindly went to the blind man and took out $20 dolllars from his own pocket and gave it to him.
MATTER: this is important because we should all follow the example of the Dairy Queen employee for standing up for this blind man and confronting the situation. He showed honorabilty and kindness. Something we should all do and follow.

"In today's world, it is through images- much more than parents, teachers, or clergy- that we are taught how to be."
The Globalization of Eating Disorders by Susan Bordo. Paragraph 8 Page 20

Say: This passage in the book is saying how a lot of the images we see in magazines, online, billboards, advertisement, and more, show men and women the so-called "characteristics" of how "perfect" people look like and act. It gives people the idea that they have to be like that and look like that in order to be accepted in society and even though teachers and parents tell them otherwise, they still feel like they are obligated to be "perfect".

Mean: To me I think this means that people don't see themselves as people who are good enough. Someone always has to be better or look better in order to feel like they are better. They don't realize that they are actually perfect just the way they are because everyone is perfect in their own way. The pictures we see portray the perfect person, but that's not at all true.

Matter: This matters a lot to me because I have been someone who would look at other people, famous people, and think to myself, "Wow she's beautiful. I wish I looked like her. I need to look like her." and I was an idiot to think that. I love myself for who I am and even of other don't think so, it doesn't matter because all that matters is who I look like to myself. Images can say whatever they want, but only you know who you are and how you should be.

"How can mere images be so powerful?" - Susan Bordo

Say: It states that images throughout media can be powerful and can give a huge influence or an impact to the vulnerable audience.

Mean: This quote means that images that viewer see can get jealous of the "perfectionist" they see on advertisements, internet, and other social media. This gets audience to change their appearances by purchasing products or starving themselves.

Matter: This shows a huge impact towards the community because the audience might take the ads seriously and they might put their life in endanger by starving or losing capital on unnecessary wants to become the perfectionist they see on social media. Instead of this type of influence, they should advertise advice instead of products. They make the audience feel so insecure that they might harm themselves just attempting to recreate themselves.

“For myself, for a long time... maybe I felt inauthentic or something, I felt like my voice wasn't worth hearing, and I think everyone's voice is worth hearing. So if you've got something to say, say it from the rooftops.”
― Tom Hiddleston

Say: everyone has something to say. Always. And that something is always worth hearing. And we should be able to say it to the world.

Mean: Some people, and probably more then we suspect, feel that what they have to say isn't important enough to be heard. They think that they aren't important or that they don't matter and that's a sad thing. Everyone is important and so is everything they have to say. And everyone should be able to say whatever is on their mind without fear that they will get ridiculed for it on picked on for it and we should be able to feel relived when we get what we have to say off our chest. It's in our nature to want to talk and tell stories and say what we want. But it's really hard sometimes and it just shouldn't be. It really shouldn't. But it is, and hey, maybe we can do something about. We can encourage it and admire and praise. Because everyone has something to say. Be it bad, good, urgent or not. And we should be able to say it. Scream it at the top of our lungs and someone will listen.

Matter: This quote matters because sometimes, insecurity gets the best of us and we tend to judge our decisions based in it. And because of that, sometimes we can't do or say what we wish to. And that's something that should never happen. We should always speak what we wish to. So we need to find a way to make this so it isn't so. A member of the CNN staff, wrote an article on the latest Miss America, Nina Davuluri, who is of Indian decent. "She's the second consecutive New York beauty queen to take the Miss America title, but she's the first Indian-American to wear the national crown -- er, tiara -- atop her perfectly coiffed head."

Say: This particular quote says that Nina Davuluri, the former Miss New York, was just crowned Miss America.

Mean: I'm talking more about the article than the quote, but this means that she is the first winner of Indian descent.

Matter: I've read articles prior to this one, but this matters because when Nina Davuluri won the crown, it caused a massive uproar on social media sites, mainly Twitter. People were making shrewd racial remarks about her heritage and how she doesn't deserve to be Miss America, simply because she does not depict the stereotypical "American"; an apple pie baking, poised in pearls, big hair, blue eyes, Caucasian. They called her "Miss 7-11" or most mistakenly called her a Muslim. I personally think that Miss Davuluri deserves the crown 100% because she does depict a classy, sophisticated, talented, and beautiful woman in America. I think its taking a very long time for people to understand that America is no longer predominantly occupied by Caucasians. America is a melting pot, and Nina Davuluri is a symbol for change, "I’ve always viewed Miss America as the girl next door, and the girl next door is evolving as the diversity in America evolves." says Davuluri.

SAY: what she saying is the insanity would be dark and risky, but as soon as you try you'll enjoy it.

MEAN: That no matter what, or how crazy something could you enjoy.

MATTER: It's matter because she encouraged you to do things that you thought many people would seem it as insanity, not because something seems to have nonsense it doesn't mean you will not be able to enjoy it or being happy doing it

The article the following description describes is "Pope Francis: Church too focused on gays and abortion" by BBC News (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-24166434).

Say: The article basically just compounds the opinions expressed by Pope Francis. Pope Francis discussed himself, what he wishes to do, and his beliefs to a Jesuit magazine. Most notably, Francis expresses his belief that the church is too focused on preaching about "abortion, gay people and contraception". Pope Francis appears to be apprehensive about the church just focusing on controversial moral issues and thinks if it continues on its path that the church will disintegrate (in his eloquent unique manner of speech). Formerly Pope Francis expressed that gay priests should not be questioned as long as they live upright lives and he seems very tolerant of different peoples and new ways. On top of this he explains that while the church's position need not change it should lean more toward "healing wounds" and forgiveness. He wishes to bring back followers to the church by reestablishing the original purposes of the church and making the church "a home to all".

Mean: Pope Francis expressed that he thinks that the church is being too fixated on righ-tish issues and should balance out what it focuses on. This is an interesting position for a pope to establish. For one, it is directed at controversial issues which may be divisive in the church.

Matter: If the church follows his sayings (which it might not as a culture long since not bound by the wishes of its leadership) this is a new direction for it. Certain members of the church are known for being tight on these issues and inevitably there are those who are going to be displeased by it although what influence the new pope and his policies will have is unclear.

In America there were those disappointed that he didn't address these issues early and it might be that they would be disappointed with the position he has expressed.

It also shows that the new pope is not so bound up in rules as previous popes who did make a stance on these issues.

You may know my name but not my story, you've heard what I've done but not what I've been through, you may recognize my face, but not my mind. You see my weakness, but I'm stronger than you can imagine. (This passage I've read from the Internet.)
Say:

This says that everyone has their own story, we can't judge a book by its cover.

Matter:

My interpretation of this passage is that it means that it is not easy for someone to get a accomplishment. They have been tried so hard to meet the goals. So don't judge anyone unless you know about him/her.

Matter:

This passage matters because I think we should do our own useful work without regard to the honor or admiration your efforts might win from others. Just be yourself. Do the best you can to beat one's rivals.

“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.”
― Bernard M. Baruch

Say: Don't let other people influence you. Be the person that you truly are, because no matter what you do, there's always going to be people who aren't satisfied. Not everybody will like you, but that's fine, because there will always be people who do.

Mean: In today's society, there's an unspoken rule that tells people what to be, what to do, and how to act. If you're not a part of the "norm," then you're cast aside and considered strange. As a result, many people (often adolescents who haven't grown into their shells yet) become what others want them to be instead of they want to be.

Matter: We've got to make a change before people grow up as empty vessels. Instead of encouraging people to follow trends and doing what's "popular," we've got to teach people that it's better to be liked for what you are than what you aren't. Acquaintances are a dime a dozen; impressing them won't matter. What matters is finding people like you, who like you for you.

In Sarah's Key, Tatiana De Rosnay wrote, "It felt natural, being with him. As if we had been doing this for years. As if this was not just the third time in our lives we were seeing each other."

Say: Even though it was only their third time meeting each other, Julia and William feel like they have known each other for many years.

Mean: Although Julia and William only met each other a few times, they are connected through this strong bond -- a bond which is created through Sarah.

Matter: In life, we might meet people who we would instantly become friends with. Even if we just have met them for a day or so, we feel like we have known them for many years, as if we have been friends since we were born. There are times when we might know people for many years, and yet, it seems like we do not really know them at all nor do they know us.

"Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood"-- Marie Curie.

SAY
We should not waste our time to be afraid of things, instead, we should take our time to understand it. When you understand your fear, you will not be frightened, because it is no longer a new thing or challenge to you.

MEAN
My interpretation of this passage is that it is important for us to understand and face our fear. There are difficulties in life, but what you need to do is to overcome the difficulties. If you do not take action, you will always keep your fear in your mind.

MATTER
This passage matters because it gives people a important life lesson. I am a person who easily give up when I am in trouble, but now I realize that if you do not defeat your dread, you will never succeed.

In Syria submits 'initial disclosure' of chemical weapons, Shashank Bengali wrote, "Experts at the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in The Hague began translating the document from Arabic and reviewing its contents, but organization officials released few details."

SAY
The Organization start translating the documants about the Civil War in Syria but not all of them.

MEAN
The Prohibition of chemical Weapons in The Hague start translating the documents and reviewing contents from Arabic. But still there are more documents from Arabic that not translat, yet.

MATTER
The matter is that the documents did not translate all of them. That mean could be, in the documents, there is something which is bad things were wrote and they do not want to translate it.

"Belief in one self is one of the most important bricks in building any successful venture."-Lydia M. Child

Say:Believe in yourself because that is what makes you better off in the future.

Mean: It is important that you believe in yourself because when it comes the time you are on the line only you can make your outcome better.

Matter:Believing in yourself matters because America started with the power of aggressive believers who wanted independence. We believed we were right. Also Michael Jackson who took a chance got on stage and gave performance a whole new meaning. He believed in himself and is still is a sensation even though he is no longer with us. We need to believe in ourselves because if we don't their would be no one to look up upon.

Mean:
You should be yourself because at the end of the day, people who matter in your life will accept and love you from who you really are not the image you make up.

Matter:
This quote matters because most people in today's society only think about "fitting in with the crowd" that sometimes they might forget about their true self and what they really like. “Isn't that the greatest gift in the world-just not to care?"
- Tweak by Nic Sheff

Say: Caring too much makes a big impact in your lifestyle. You're constantly worrying about different variety of things and people who probably don't care about you in return; so why put that much stress on yourself?

Mean: The quote means that sometimes not caring feels like weights have been lifted off your shoulder.

"Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever"
-Mahatma Gandhi

Say: This quote by Mahatma Gandhi says that we should live our life to the fullest. Gandhi says that we should not give up on learning.

Mean: This means that we should live our life to the fullest because you'll never know when your life will end. Also, we shouldn't give up on learning because learning is an everyday experience and it's the way of life.

Matter: This matters because people don't know how to cherish the life that they have. For example, the people in third world countries don't have the freedom and advantages that we have here in America.

Rick Riordan, in THE LAST OLYMPIAN, wrote, "A great hero must be rewarded".

Say: Heroes deserve great praise and awards for their noble deeds.

Mean: My interpretation of this passage is that heroes expect to be rewarded for what they accomplish. Indeed, heroic actions should be rewarded but the rewards should not be the only incentive to encourage such actions. Heroic deeds should be done out of heart and for the greater good.

Matter: If we live in a world where people only performed "heroic" actions, or any kind of community service or act of kindness, etc., in anticipation for a prize or reward, then people would be very greedy. It is important to remember that true acts of kindness or heroism are done regardless of the physical rewards but are done from the heart. The world would be a better place if everyone were willing to commit solely from his or her heart.

I think this quote is telling people that on the way to working on a long project or a simple assignment, it will seem like you're making large portions of progress but then along the way, there will also be problems or mishaps that cause the progress to be longer than what you'd expect.

This quote reminds us to never give up. The process of something great at the end will turn up to be longer when actually taken because of the unexpected (but now would be expected because of the forewarning message from this quote) mishaps along the way.

"Stay gold..." - Johnny from the Outsiders

Say: in the novel "The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, Johnny, a young boy of 16 is on his death bed when he leand over to his best friend Ponyboy and says "Stay gold, Ponyboy...stay gold". Johnny gets this phrase from a poem Ponyboy read to him before.

Mean: When Johnny says this he is reflecting on the peom by Robert Frost where in the peom it says "Nothing gold can stay". the means that all good things dont last forever, all good things come to an end. BY the end of the book the two boys dont believe that they can go on with the way they live and still be protected and keep their youthfull innocence. Johnny though insists and urges Ponyboy to "Stay Gold'. Stay innocent. Troughout going trough life faceing the adult world of voilence, murder, drugs, and evil people, still keep your child like ways. keep the goodness in the world.

“Finally, the lock clicked and she tugged the secret door open. A rotten stench hit her like a fist. She drew away. The boy at her side recoiled, afraid. Sarah fell to her knees. Sarah could not speak, she could only quiver, her fingers covering her eyes, her nose, blocking out the smell.....She sank to her knees again and she screamed at the top of her lungs, she screamed, for her mother, for her father, screamed for Michel.” ― Tatiana de Rosnay, Sarah's Key

Say: This quote is the beginning of the end to what he story had been leading up to. Sarah had finally found her way back to her home in Paris, thanks to the help of her “protectors” Jules and Genevieve. She had kept the key safe with her this whole time, and she still had hope that her brother would be safe and sound in the secret cupboard; she had hidden him there right before being arrested with her parents by the French police. Too long had passed and Michel was dead by the time Sarah got to him, however.

Mean: This quote made me enraged at the fact that there was not going to be a happy ending after all for Sarah or Michel. This is the sad truth in reality, however, because there was rarely one for any of the Jews and their families during this time. Sarah was only ten or eleven years old, and the fact that she had to witness such horror and the dead body of her brother is just heart wrenching. The author explains when that when the girl was finally able to open the cupboard in such detail, it feels as if you’re right there with Sarah. Although it never really states how long he was in there, just knowing that there was a “rotten stench” gives it away to the reader that it must have been a while. She was devastated, and realized that not only had she lost her parents, her sibling was gone as well.

Matter: This quote matters because it will come to define the rest of Sarah Starzinsky’s life. Although this mistake haunts her for the rest of her days, she never gave up the struggle to save Michel. She was too young and too oblivious to realize the consequences that came with her action of sheltering her brother. Sarah was truly a clever and caring person, even if she was still a child herself. This was demonstrated from the moment she escaped from Auschwitz with Rachel; she fought and fought until it was impossible to do anything anymore.

"Catcher in the Rye" the quote "Only educated and Scholarly men are able to contribute to this world"

Say: This quote is trying to say that individuals that dont have an education under any circumstances don't have any contribution to this world. Which is completely bogus.

Mean: This quote destroys the fact that anyone could accomplish anything. Individuals that come from poor families are influential around the world, and need to be thanked for what they do for this world. They don't have the money or school to abide by their accomplishments, but they work harder and harder everyday to get people to notice and appreciate them.

Matter: This quote matters because it really shows how stubborn people can be sometimes. They only think the naturally talented have a place in this world, but in reality, hard work is whats keeping america standing today. Its the mindset of less fortunate individuals that helps America Stand tall.

California raising the minimum wage to $10 by the year 2016
http://abcnews.go.com/Business/california-raise-minimum-wage-10-2016/story?id=20258394

Say: Minimum wage will be raised to $9 in 2014 and to $10 by 2016

Mean: People working minimum wage jobs will get a higher pay. It will also force businesses to adjust their budget for the minimum wage by possibly firing workers. It will also hurt small businesses that may not be able to afford the $10 minimum wage.

Matter: By increasing the minimum wage business will raise the price of their products to make the same amount of profit they are now. It will also mean that businesses will lay off workers to save money. It will also hurt small businesses since they may not be able to afford to pay their workers $10 an hour unlike the larger businesses like Walmart.
