Gregory Boyle, in TATTOOS ON THE HEART, wrote, "You stand with the belligerent, the surly, and the badly behaved until bad behavior is recognized for the language it is: the vocabulary of the deeply wounded and of those whose burdens are more than they can bear" (2010, p. 179). (This is cited in APA format.)

Say:

This says that bad behavior is a way of communicating one's pain and that standing with the badly behaved is necessary until the pain is revealed and understood.

Mean:

My interpretation of this passage is that it means that when people act out and misbehave that they are doing so because they are in tremendous pain. Either they've been neglected and their own needs are not being met, or they have been abused or hurt in some way, or perhaps they've suffered a loss that is too big for them to bear. Instead of using their words about how much pain they're in, they act out by doing things that are inappropriate and often illegal (This is a book about gangs.)

Matter:

This passage matters because it offers an explanation for bad behavior and challenges us to see beyond the behavior to the heart of the matter. If we can do that, then we may feel more empathy, and as a result, be able to stick it out with those who are acting badly rather than quickly dismiss, judge and abandon them.

"Both should be done if you enjoy, reading or writing. Two sides of the same coin, right?"

Say: This says to 'be fair' within which ever you enjoy to do most out of the two. Instead of outweighing on or thee other.

Mean: It means to create a balance in which one you enjoy most. having an equal amount of perspective as a writer or a reader. Reading what others spend time on writing, as you would like others to read your words.

Matter: This matters because it teaches you a new way of open thinking. Treating anything as an equal, thinking of what they're thinking or may think before the action is made. Although for what the quote says, doing both reading and writing is only fair for the words being read and written. The words being the coin.

The Lost boy by Dave Pelzer -David what your mother did to you was wrong. Very wrong. No child deserves to be treated like that. She's sick.”
Say: Dave is a nine-year-old boy who was mentally and physically abused. He was not considered a member of his "family" and was constantly abused by his mother. Dave was rescued by a couple of people at a bar and was taken into counseling and places in a foster home. He began to question whether he deserved what his mother did to him. It took the words of his social worker to help him realized that his mother was "sick".

Matter: Children everywhere are being abused whether it is by family, friends and even strangers. No child deserves to be left without a home and food, but most importantly love. A parents responsibility is provide for their child and love them unconditionally, not whip, choke and burn them.
Mean: growing up, a parent is to love and support their child. No one deserved to be treated in such an abusive manner. Dave never truly knew why he became an outcast of his once "happy, loving family". His mother’s alcohol problems caused his child to be different than that of children his age. As he claimed, Dave was never a member of the "family".

I totally agree with you Jessica. No child should be ignored or negelected and for any child to be treated in any abusive matter. Being abused as a kid might also make the abused child abuse his kids when he or she gets older and might impact threre life on the worse.

No child deserves to be ignored or abused, in fact, they deserve our love and kindnesses. No matter what have they done wrong, we should still be patient to them and teach them the right way. Keep abusing them isn;t going to help nor change their personalities. It's just going to make things worse.

i agree 100%. no child should have to suffer that trauma. a child didn't asked to be brought into this world, they have no control of that or who their parents are. a child at young age is innocent and has no choice on what goes on in their life. It is a sad truth.

This passage reminds me of the students I encounter who have behavior problems. It makes me wonder what is going on in their lives at home and whether or not their needs are being met or if they've suffered some loss or trauma. It also makes me curious about how to properly intervene without yelling at them. What would work?

"There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you."

Say: This says that there isn't any greater harm then keeping an untold story to yourself. You should always share it to a person you trust.

Mean: It means that it will cause you pain to keep a sad story by yourself. Is better to tell people and let it go freely. Nothing is a greater harm then keeping stuff to yourself.

Matter: Sharing it to a person matters because if you always keep it in your heart, then the pain will eventually get stronger and stronger. Soon you will keep thinking of it and can't concentrate. This is why it matter to everyone who keeps a untold story to theirself.

All of it can cause lots of stress and other problems, distracting you from what's really important. It's better to talk about your problems with others so that you can have them to vent to and you'll feel much better about it because you know that they'll have your back and support you, no matter what.

She told me that she couldn't tell her friend because she didn't want to hurt her friend. That made of think of this great quote i've come across with. Trusting people is an easy thing to do, yet trust could be easily destroyed as well. Once someone has lied, the trust just won't be as sincere as before anymore. This is why everyone should be real to each other.

Walter Dean Myers, in Malcolm X, wrote that "this constant threat to black America greatly affected how Malcolm reacted to his classmates."pg. 31
Say: Even thought this book is a biography of the legend, Malcolm X, this man describes how a teenager can be affected by his or her environment and act different which can be both good and bad to others.
Mean: This means that even in the modern world, people act the way that other kids act in their environment since they get convinced it is the 'cool' way to act and i think this can also lead to violence in the real world since this is a biography.
Matter: This phrase is very important since many kids can act badly and hurt other people espicially since during malcolm's X's time, violence was very common in the streets of Brooklyn and this author describes the basics of peer pressure indirectly.

SAY: The main character, Heidi, is trying to travel somewhere by bus to solve a mystery that she always wondered about. However, Bernie, doesn't want to let her go. Since Heidi is the closest thing Bernie has to a daughter, she doesn't want anything to happen to her.
Mean: This quote shows us how close Bernie is to Heidi eventhough they aren't blood related. It also shows us how badly Heidi wants to go on this trip by herself since Bernie is unable to go. Still, at the end of the quote, we can see that Bernie gives in and decides to let Heidi go.

Say: People's first impression of others are often biased. Even people who are suppose to be just will automatically assume your fate based on your race, gender, and other characteristics.

Mean: I think the quote means that the external appearance is very important, especially in first impressions. Stereotypes such as asians being smart, and African Americans being troublesome will always exist because people like to judge others.

Matter: The book is basically about a Black teenager undergoing the trial process and losing his innocence. I think that this kind of event is inevitable in real life. Murder is a sensitive topic to some. I do agree that when someone takes a life then they are to be punished for it. To have that guilt haunt them everyday by doing time. But for some who have a different mind set, they really wont care that they had taken a life. A life that has a family and loved one. The life that could have been so successful if they didn’t do a stupid mistake. i think those are the ones who are hiding the truth. They are hiding the real pain and discomfort by avoiding their feelings and guilt. It is only when they can realize what they have done is when change can happen. So I feel that whatever they do have it coming for them. But if they are given that second chance to change, I hope they appreciate it enough to actually change.

Say: In this quote, it says a lot about the main character, Lauren. This is her autobiography that gave me a perspective on how she really is throughout the whole book.

Mean: This quote means that not every is fortunate. Everyone lives a challenging life and it's what you make out of it. Lauren had a though life since her parents were never there for her. Her grandma is the only one who really cares about her and loves her unconditionally. There is a lot of people in this world that probably have to live a tough life like Lauren since there are so many druggies.

Matter: It matters because it shows the reader another side of the world. Some people may think that the world is a good place but in reality, it's really hard to work and live. Also, there are a lot of drug addicts in the society and everyone is corrupted by the horrible drugs they do. People should really stay away from drugs. There are a lot of better things to do.

Tatiana de Rosnay, in SARAH'S KEY, wrote "Why so many children and women, and so few men?" (60)

Say: Rosnay had Bamber, a friend of Julia, who is the main character ask her this.

Mean: He wondered why so many women and children were taken away when the French police were really after the Jewish men. Hefound it interesting when the sign reported that there were twice the amount of women and four times as many children that were taken when compared to the men. Julia explained that rumors of the roundup were already circulating so the men had a chance to go into hiding. Only the men hid because only men had be arrested when the rumors were circulating.

Matter: This quote matters because it shows how inhumane the French police were during the roundup. You would expect only men to be taken, but when the men weren't around the police still arrested the women. They had no feelings toward children or women and treated them poorly in the camps. It left the men who had lost their wives and children feeling hopeless because their family was now gone and they won't ever see them again.

Say: We might not be alone, but we feel alone even though we are surrounded by people.

Mean: Steve Harmon wouldn't forget what had happen and he would always be thinking about the event even thought he is proven not guilty. He would not have a same personality as before.

Matter: It give the reader a foreshadow of the horrible emotional state Steve Harmon will live through both during the trial and even after it’s over.

Assassins Creed Revelations (The Book): Al Mualim-"'In much wisdom is much grief. And he who increaseth knowledge, increaseth sorrow.'"
This story revolves around trying to get to the keys to find the secret vault in the old grand Assassin castle in Masyaf. And it is the Mentor Assassin, Ezio's job to get the keys before the Templars get it and somehow gain infinite knowledge of everything. This is a quote from the book spoken from Altiir's mentor Al Mualim taken from the book of Solomon.

Say: It says that when you have wisdom, it gives you more greif. And when you increase your knowledge you also increase your sorrow.

Mean: This means that knowledge is not all that great. Here is an example: In the story of Adam and Eve, the two were born dumb as were all of us. They were the first humans there was no one but God to rear them. The only thing that God taught them were simple rules. Live and go by the rules. One of the rules was to not eat the fruit of knowledge. They both thrived off of the garden of Eden where it is home to two trees. The Tree of Life and the forbbiden tree of knowledge. Then the devil comes in a form of a serpent and uses temptation to entice them to take a bite from the Tree of Life. They did take a bite and gained knowledge of everything and finally noticed that they were both naked. They figured the truth behind their creaton and know the truth about everything and everyone. In which they were banished from the Garden and were given a curse to never have everlasting life on Earth. But the key point was that they noticed everything providing them low self-esteem. And that is what is with the world, the more you know, the more you use your knowledge on your own self evaluation.

Matter: It matters because too mush knowledge is not too good. It is a just like saying too much of the good stuff is not good for you. This quote as explains what is happening in the world today. We talk about grades and how smart the student is but in truth, it is all about the skill it takes to do the job. Knowledge is not what you need in life. It is skill. Some people who has brain deficiency can still live. Sometimes we gather useless knowledge and we can ask ourselves what can it do for me. There are scientists out in the world only questioning why some events occur. But do we need the knowledge of trying to find the many unknown species in the world or do we need knowledge of how to use the skill? Do we need knoledge of give ourselves some self- evaluation or knowledge that can help you to help others? In my opinion it is up to you.

Suzanne Collins, The Mocking Jay, says "“Whatever it takes to break you.” (2010, chapter 10)

Say: This passage indicates that someone is trying to get her to have a nervous breakdown and found her weak point. This person saying line is indicating a threat and a challenge. A threat to back off and a challenge to see how much a person will take before they break.

Mean: In order for people to get what they want, they will do whatever it takes even if it means death. Every has a break point where they just can't take it anymore and give in. The person saying this line shows that they think they are in control, that they have won this battle.

Matter: It matters because it shows that people will stop at nothing to have their way. People can be tough, but eventually they will crack. The part "whatever it takes" shows that they are both not backing down, because this person has tried multiple threats to break the victim, but still hasn't cracked her. It also shows that the murderer won't give up until he wins his battle. I think perseverance is key in this situation and to always fight for what you believe in.

In "A Child Called 'It'" by Dave Pezer, the main character, David, said: "I knew if I wanted to live, I would have to think ahead, I would no longer cry like a helpless baby. In order to survive, I could never give in to her" (43)
Say: This is something that a boy who was abused by his mother day and night says in his heart. David was abused by his alcoholic mother in many horrible ways that we can't imagine. And he is struggling to survive from his mother's evil hands. While his mother uses inhumane ways to torture, or even attempts to kill him, he tries his best to stay alive.
Mean: I think this passage means that one must stand strong when something bad happens to you. Giving up simply means giving the that force and letting it over powers you. There is a saying that one cannot stop a wall from falling upon you. The only thing you can do is the stand strong and not let it collapse you. If you survive that fall, that means you are a strong and more capable person.
Matter: It matters because when the boy says that he is only around ten years old. It is not easy for a boy at this age to say something like that. A boy at this age should be in a warm and caring family. However, David is being treated even worse than a dog in his family. He did not give in to his mom's evil ways but he struggled to survive even though no one in the family would help him. This story is raising our attention on child abuse and we should pay attention to it and do something to stop this.

Dave Pelzer, in THE LOST BOY, wrote, "Lary is just at that age when he's rebellious. He wants to fight everything and everyone. Give him a wide berth-- lots of room. He's just feeling you out. Give it some time. Okay?"
"Yes ma'am. I understand, but am I a wimp 'cause I didn't fight back? I mean, is it right to fight your own mother?"
..."No David," she stated matter-of-factly. "You are not a wimp for not fighting back. I don't know all that happened, but I do know you're not a wimp." (1997, p.95).

Say:

This says that David is being called a wimp by Lary and is debating whether or not to believe him, since he didn’t fight his mother back when she abused him. David’s foster mom ensures him that he is not a wimp and that fighting back was not a decent option.

Mean:

My interpretation of this passage is simply that David is having trouble disbelieving his real mother’s perception of him as being a “bad” young boy. He has little confidence and lacks necessary reasoning to why his real mother and Lary are wrong. Being entirely inferior throughout his life has driven him to a point where he doubts his true well-mannered self. His lack of confidence to stand up for himself has left a mark in his mind to consider himself as wimpy and extremely dim-witted. His foster mom must have the capability to push him forward to succeed and not to be left in the shadows of fear and pity.

Matter:

This passage matters because it gives the reader David’s current state of mind that has not yet changed in the rise of the conflict of the story. It gives a preview of David’s relationship in his new home with his new foster mom and reveals the true trouble that is stopping David from being happy. His troubles lie within himself. With negative comments springing up on David during his childhood, he needs guidance and positive complements to alter his self-perception. With respect, no abuse, and a bit of confidence, David will live a happy life by the end of the story.

Marilyn Reynolds, in "If You Loved Me," wrote: "On those forms where you're supposed to check the little boxes, there's never a box for me. White/Black/Chinese is not a combination they include, but that's what I am" (Pg. 18).

Say: The author is saying that when she was filling out forms about herself, there wasn't a nationality that described her specifically. She is 3 races in one and she accepts herself for who she is.

Mean: This quote means that she accepts who she is. In this book, Reynolds basically describes her struggles involving things like sex and drugs. She always struggles with what she should do and who she is in certain aspects of life. But this quote tells the readers that one thing she is confident is her race, which is White/Black/Chinese.

Matter: It matter because, in my opinion, many people have problems in their life and are confused about many things, whether it be work, school, relationships, and etc. I think many people can relate to Reynolds in this aspect. But if those who are struggling could have one thing about themselves that they are confident with, they will be able to have the motivation and strength that Marilyn Reynolds does to find the solution and answers about the problems they have in their lives.

From Ender's Game "Knocking him down won the first fight. I wanted to win all the next ones, too. So they'd leave me alone." (Chapter 3, pg 1)

Say: This quote was trying to say that Ender wanted to win every fight after this one without actually having to fight.

Mean: In the story Ender was being bullied at school at age 6. This bully picked a fight with him and Ender decided to teach the bully a lesson. Ender beat up the bully with everyone watching him. To win the next fights he set an example. Not only did Ender beat up the bully, he destroyed him and made him suffer. He made the bully suffer while everyone watched so that he would never get bullied again.

Matter: This matters because setting examples is the best way to convey an idea. For example like the story "Start Something that Matters" not only did the guy write a book, he set an example by opening a shoe store that provided shoes for children with no shoes. Ideas are better heard through stories and better understood through examples.

Peeta Mellark, in THE HUNGER GAMES, said, “Only I keep wishing I could think of a way to…to show the Capitol they don’t own me. That I’m more than just a piece in their Games.”

Say:

This tells me that Peeta wishes that he could stand up for himself and others and that he doesn't want to be given orders by the people who control the Hunger Games.

Mean:

My interpretation of this passage is that Peeta doesn't like the fact that these people who are in charge of the Hunger Games are telling everyone what to do. He believes that every human being should be given the right to speak up for themselves and have a say in the matter. It doesn't seem right for them to force people to do something that they don't want to do. It's unfair that people are just being thrown in some game, fighting for their lives mainly for entertainment purposes. It seems so selfish for these people to do such things, especially to little kids.

Matter:

This matters to me because we should be grateful for the life that we have. We have the right to speak up for ourselves and we are given the choice to do something. However, in the book, the Hunger Games, these people aren't given a choice. If they don't do something they are told, they will most likely be killed. This makes me look at my life with a completely different perspective and what our life could have been and that we shouldn't take the freedom that we have for granted.

Nic Sheff in We All Fall Down wrote: "The plane stutters, lurches, kicks, and stalls. I'm waiting for the fall, praying. A chance at a good death." (pg 115)

Say: After all the pain and suffering he has gone through, at this point he just wanted to die. It seems like he didn't want to commit suicide, so he just wants to die in an accident. The plane seemed like it was going to crash and he was praying it would be a "good chance at death".

Mean: I think this quote means he did not care if he died or not anymore. If he did then he thought it was a good way to die. Better than dying on an over dose on drugs or killing himself.

Matter: This quote is pretty much how a lot of people feel when they are in detox. Or if they have been suffering for a long time and do not want to commit suicide. They kinda of want to just die so they don't suffer anymore but then they can't do it. They start not caring about things and when something like a plane crashing. Walter Dean Myers, in Malcolm X, wrote that "The very idea that someone so close to him, someone he had considered so large and invincible, could suddenly be dead, was a shock." (pg.24)

Say: The author is trying to say that when he had heard about his fathers death, it seemed impossible and was hard to believe.

Mean: My interpretation of this passage is simply that to Malcolm, his father was considered invincible. Almost like a hero, so for him to die was a huge shock for him that totally dropped his idealistic of what a certain hero was. Also it sort of made him fear death more then whats actually worth living.

Matter: In my opinion, it would be wonderful for us to live forever but unfortunately we cannot. As humans we grow upon each other and always get attached as our way to thrive. Like how we must depend on our mothers to help us mature as we blossom from a child to adulthood. So for someone as close as a family member or even friend to die is like having someone cut off a part of your body, cause that person was probably worth more then your life.

In The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, the narrator, Death said: “A small but note worthy note: I’ve seen so many young men over the years who think they’re running at other young men. They are not. They’re running at me.” (2005, pg. 174-175)

Say: In times of war especially WW2, young men are drafted into the military, from their town or villages, in order to fight against their country’s enemies. Only to face death himself, as they run into the battlefield. Death shows a perfect observation of war, telling other facts that are happen in Europe apart from the main character Liesel Meminger.

Mean: It shows that death is not truly a “friend” to war and what people interpret their view of him is also entirely true. Death actually hates to see so many young men meeting him and not pleased by that. In war human race to their deaths rather the enemies that are in front of them. Overtime Death showing sympathy towards the humans, I see that he is clearly more benevolent than sadistic, than I originally thought.

Matter: It matter because, Death is not always a trickster or swindler, to take one’s own life or soul. Many cultures and religion have their own view on the personification of Death. The actual point is that only mankind can create war, and war creates despair and destruct, which lead to death. For these young soldier who fought May or may not know the outcome of it, to find both (ally and the enemy) of their actions meaningless as the loss are higher than the few achieve. The only question is left “Why is there war.”

In the book the help by Kathryn Stockett page 32, "A bill that requires every white home to have a separate bathroom for the colored help. I've even notified the surgeon general of Mississippi to see if he'll endorse the idea."

Say: This quote talks about how in the time of the 1960s, African Americans were required to use separate toilets with the white people even though slavery has been abolished for 100 years already.

Mean: This quote means that the African American maids are not getting the equality they deserve. The quote reflects the frustration that black maids have on their white master and the racism that was in the society.

Matter: This quote matters because it shows how ignorance our American society is. Even though slavery was already abolished for 200 year, racism still exist throughout America. "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers

"The dream took place in the courtroom. I was trying to ask questions and nobody could hear me. I was shouting and shouting but everyone went about their business as if I wasn't there." Pg. 63-64

Say: This passage describes Harmon's feelings about his situation and the trial. Harmon has questions about his case, but no answers him, nor does it look like they can hear him.

Mean: Harmon is directly involved in the trial, but he has no idea of what's going on. At one point he didn't even realize he was involved in a store robbery; he said he was only in the store to get some mints. It feels as if no one is listening to him, and the trial will proceed to the end without his interference, his rebuttals, or anything else.

Matter: Some people feel like they have no control over their lives. The world continues on everyday with or without your actions. Children and teenagers are more susceptible to these thoughts because they are not considered mature yet. A majority of their ideas get pushed aside because "it's just an idea from a kid". I've had that happen to me quite a few times. This passage while narrowed down to Harmon's thoughts of his trial, can be expanded out to the thoughts of people everywhere.

"Everyone else took off, and the water chured as if an enormous school of barracuda were attacking." pg. 119

In the book "Play better baseball" pages 174-176 talks about tracking the baseball so it will give you a better chance to hit the ball.Tracking the ball is one of the most important part steps in hitting a baseball.

Say: It says that tracking a baseball is very important because you have see the ball clearly to be able to hit it. By doing so you can pick up the ball as soon as it is release out of the pitcher's hand and that will gave you a better oppurtunity to hit the ball

Mean: This means that if you see the ball clearly enough you'll be able choose whether you want to swing or not. A ball thrown at 90 mph is onlt hittable in fair terrority for only about .015 seconds(15 thousandth) of a second. So if you swing starts .02 of a second too early or late you will miss the ball. That is why you must keep your head still so you can see the ball clearly.

Matter: This matters because you have to be able to see the ball clearly when you are hitting. The difference could be either a weak grounder or a huge home run.

Say; True love what many people proclaim and many people will profess, but that's not always true. True love is tested by the obedience and willingness.

Matter: This quote matters because in the modern world. Nothing is about what is true. Everything is about convience, how cool something is, or how quickly i can bring myself to the top and often times this is false happiness. People delude themselves into thinking a momentational relationship will give them happiness. And it might, for a while, but it's not long until the whole thing comes crashing down.

In MOCKINGJAY by Suzanne Collins, Katniss Everdeen says, "... do you see that? Fire is catching! And if we burn, you burn with us!" (2010, pg.99-100)

Say:

Katniss is basically saying that if her side doesn't win, the Capitol is going down with her.

Mean:

This quote is spoken by a very strong character. This is implying that she won't go down without a fight. I think this is how people should think when they're fighting for a cause or issue they truly believe in. This is important as it is relaying the message that you shouldn't back down under any circumstances; that you should stand by your beliefs. You're starting a revolution.

Matter:

This quote matters because I think that is how you should feel and respond toward a cause or issue you really care about. People should feel determined to get what's right and let nothing stand in their way. No matter how many obstacles, they should just keep pushing through. If you try your best and fall, then the enemy should fall with you.

I strongly agree with your interpretation of the quote. If people stick to their guns with what they truly and honestly believe in, I think that integrity wouldn't be so rare. To stand for an issue means that you are putting in time and commitment and if that isn't enough, then when you fall, you should try to bring down your obstacles with you so that others may get further than you have.

"I was an empty shell. Like a vacant house- condemned- for months I'd been utterly uninhabitable."
-New Moon, Pg. 216

Say: It means that she has been going through a rough time without anyone being there for her not because no one wants to help her but because she won't let anyone help her so she feels lonely.

Mean: She is lonely and needs someone who will care for her and listen to her even if she has tons of problems. She wants someone who can understand her and become a part of her life where they both won't ever be separated from what her boyfriend did to her.

Matter: Even if you get separated from someone you love, somehow you will remember them even though there is a gigantic hole in your heart which will be filled soon enough.

We All Fall Down by Nic Sheff: "...I want her so much. She can't be the one to leave me. She just can't. So I will leave her. I won't call her- not ever again. It's over (page 8)."

Say: Nic was in love with Zelda and believes she's the only one for him. After they became strongly addicted to drugs, Zelda was taken to the hospital, while Nic was sent to detox. At this point, he's sitting alone agonizing because of the absence of Zelda, especially after she stopped calling him on the phone, giving him the reassurance that she still loved him. This leads to Nic thinking that he would be able to make it out of detox if he stops thinking about her completely.

Mean: My interpretation is after reading this quote, Nic, like many addicts who struggles to withdraw their excessive drug usage, would have to let go of what mattered to him/her, and focus on themselves by working his/her way to recovery.

Matter: I think this quote matters because it focuses on struggles that not only addicts experience, but everyone in different ways. Everyone has their personal struggles that they would probably have to give up that close someone or close something, and place themselves first to accomplish what's best for them, which would be becoming better people.

you are setting yourself up for disaster. You have to be whole and complete in yourself.
No one can give you that. You have to know who you are - what others say is irrelevant."

"A Childed Called It" - Dave Pelzer

“You’ve made my life a living hell!” she sneered. “Now it’s time I show you what hell is like!” Gripping on my arm, Mother held it in the orange-blue flame. My skin seemed to explode from the heat."

As a child, Dave was heavily abused, verbally and physically, by his mother. Dave's mother is currently holding on to his arm over a hot, burning stove. As Dave pleads for mercy, his mother continues to yell and pummel Dave. This comes off as incredibly surprising to me because no one in the right mind would do that to their own flesh and blood unless something is seriously wrong. This kind of deviant behavior needs to be fixed. This is a very important part of the story, because it highlights the pain that Dave is going through. In fact, this is only one of the numerous incidents that had occurred to Dave, since Dave is basically abused like so every day. This shows that Dave’s and his mother’s relationship is strained and no love is shown. As a child, it is very important to have a secured attachment with their mother. As a result of all the abuse, it is very likely that Dave cannot grow up to embrace a normal adulthood.

"Lary is just at that age when he's rebellious. He wants to fight everything and everyone. Give him a wide berth-- lots of room. He's just feeling you out. Give it some time. Okay?"

Say: At school, Lary called David a wimp because he didn't fight back, he was asking himself whether he should have fought back instead of being a "wimp".
Mean: David's foster mother tells him that he is not a wimp, especially with all those things that he has been through. It is not easy to hold back and not to fight when people insult you and so. He has shown his high-class personality yet the lack of confidence in himself at the same time. He still has a low self-esteem which makes him afraid of standing up for himself.

“Instead, we linger over a luxury that costs nothing: Imagining what may be.”
― Patricia McCormick, Sold

Say: This quote describes the power of one's imagination. This scene takes place as a mother and daughter think about what they can buy with their very small fortune and realize they have a pile of debts to pay. They decide to satisfy themselves with just their imaginations.

Mean: This means that imagination is far more valuable than anything you can buy because imagination is limitless. This is especially priceless in a society like the one in Sold, where cake and soda are considered as treats for the wealthy. It is in these times that imagination is so key to keep ease their minds and even keep their sanity.

Matter: This fact matters because our troubles pale in comparison to the hardships that their family has to go through. They worry about the roof of their home falling through daily. They hardly have enough to feed their new born baby let alone themselves. Their value of imagination shows how much our society takes it for granted. We needlessly spend money on things we don't even give a second thought about, yet they haven't even seen a car in their village before. This poverty still exists and we continue to overlook the difficulties they face in their everyday lives. They consider leaving home indefinitely and act as a servant for a wealthy family an option, while kids in America use money selfishly. The Hunger Games
By Suzanne Collins
Pg.32
"To this day, I can never shake the connection between the boy, Peeta Mellark, and the bread that gave me hope."

Say:
In this quote said by a 14 year old girl, which was entered into the Hunger Games with the boy earlier mentioned, Peeta Mellark, was something she was thinking off the top of her mind. Judging from the tone she had said it in, it had meant a lot to her during the reaping for the Hunger Games. She also said the bread that Peeta had given to her actually gave her hope for someting.

Mean:
Katniss obviously received hope from the boy Peeta Meelark because he had given her bread. The bread was probably a sign of a food or life source. Or she could of meant that he would try to start a new relationship with her. SHe also could not forget the moment between the two of them for the split second when Peeta had through the bread at Katniss.

Matter:
There can, or going to be, a huge change in Katniss's relationship with Gale and the mixed feelings she had with the two boys she that are on her mind when she isn't hunting. Gale and Peeta can be at war with each other to because they will be fighting over Katniss.

Dave Pelzer, the author of A Child Called “It”, wrote that
“Inside, my soul became so cold I hated everything. I even despised the sun, for I knew I would never be able to play in its warm presence. I cringed with hate whenever I heard other children laughing, as they played outside. My stomach coiled whenever I smelled food that was about to be served to somebody else, knowing it wasn't for me.”
Say: This quote is expressing the perspective of a child who endures hatred and anger.
Meaning: Hate, a practical emotion, is present when other sources such as people or things threaten our well-being. For example, when we feel pain, we tend to hate it and we desire it to stop. It’s pretty fundamental. In relation to this quote, it shows that someone is suffering.
Matter: This quote matters to the whole story because there is a reason for everything. Why were there feelings and emotions that pushed the boundaries to cause the child to possess such hatred and anger? We all feel a certain way because of something; positive stimulants create positive feelings, and negative stimulants create negative feelings. We all derive some sort of reaction from an incident, no matter how insignificant something is. In this story, the feelings and emotions the child is going through is crucial and in my opinion, it is the most important. Far too often, we dismiss such radical experiences in our life. There off, someone much less fortunate than we are demonstrating their emotions correlating with their experiences and losses can change our mind and the way we think about things and this, I believe is a possible purpose of this story.

"Bursting out with angry words was always so much easier than maintaining one's dignity and self-respect."
Once upon a Marigold, Jean Ferris. (p. 46)

SAY: Christian, a caveman, is in love with a girl named Marigold. He is always hiding in bushes and uses a telescope to spy on her. Christian saw how angry Marigold was at her mother, but noticed she kept her feelings to herself. This quote is saying that exclaiming bad words/cussing is much easier than maintaining your dignity and emotions.

MEAN: Christian enjoys looking at Princess Marigold or that he a creepy weirdo. Princess Marigold wants to keep in a happy mood and does not like to get angry. Marigold does not get along with her mother very well, but are able to keep her emotions stabilized. Maintaining self-respect is not easy to accomplish when one’s feelings are disrupted.

MATTER: If Princess Marigold were to lose her temper easily, her family would have gotten into many arguments. When Marigold shows off more good qualities of a person, it attracts more competition for Christian. If the people were able to control their emotions, there would be less arguing and problems making our world a better place.

SAY: This quote means that rioting and causing street terror isn't the proper way to protest because they should be peacefully protesting with their signs instead of using physical force to get attention.

MEAN: Lots of people are protesting because of the economy and the governing people that don't necessarily do their jobs. Like the !5 out of the 100% protest, and the Treyvon Martin case.

MATTER: Everyone's opinion should be noticed, reviewed, and reflected upon so that we all know what's going on in the world we currently live in, protesting is just a simple way to show what's primarily going on.

"If what's coming from others don't make you feel better about yourself in the world then it ain't good for you it ain't love." Mr. Nak from Ironman by Chris Crutcher

Say: If people say things to you that makes you feel bad in this world it isn't good for you and it is not love.

Mean: When people say things to you that does not make you feel good about yourself it is not good for you. If they say things that is harmful to you in this world it is not good for you.

Matter: People can be thoughtless in what they say to each other which causes this world to have more trouble then it really needs (causes more harm then necessary). This is not really fine evn if you think it is a joke because it ruins either both parties or one of the party.

The Help By: Kathryn Stockett
"She rather be setting out here with the help than in there watching her mama look anywhere but at her" (p.106)

Say:
Mae Mobley likes to stick around with Aibileen rather than with her mama because her mama hardly cares about her. Instead of playing with Mae Mobley, her mama would always be busy making herself look elegant. As a mom, she isn't doing her job. Aibileen is the one who is always taking care of her.

Mean:
This means that when Mae Mobley is grown up, she will be closer to Aibileen rather than her mama. She will be treating Aibileen as a mom, while treating her mama as a friend or relative. The image of her mama will be a blur. Even though a person may have a maid to do everything for them in the house, as a mother, they should be taking care of their kids.

Matter:
This matters because a mother/parents plays an important part in a child's developing process. As a mother, they will be missing out a lot and these blanks can never be filled in. Mae Mobley's mama will soon regret for not caring so much about her daughter.

Say: Angle, the eleven year old daughter, is sick and tired of always being the grown-up. She wants her mom to be the adult from now on because she's tired of taking care of everyone else while they should be the one taking care of her.

Mean: It means that some parents should start acting like an adult and actually take care of their children instead of their children taking care of them.

So like the drunk mess she is, she went up to him and slapped him for being the cause of the argument. So since lots of these confrontations keep happening, Dave thinks he deserves these beatings. So the mother is basically mind F***ing him.

Mean: When Dave is refering to how he thinks its his fault why his mother torures him, he means that he. Is a "bad boy" who needs to be punished which is not the case.

In The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan, the protagonist, Percy Jackson and a fellow character, Rachel Dare, have a short conversation. " 'Annabeth's usually not like this,' I told her. 'I don't know what her problem is.' Rachel raised her eyebrows. ' Are you sure you don't know?' 'What do you mean' 'Boys,' she muttered. 'Totally blind.' 'Hey, don't you get on my case, too! ... " (pg. 272, 2008)

Say
In this passage, it says two people of different gender have spoken of the same topic. But one who is the same gender as the subject, understands the situation clearly with what seems like a very knowledgeable perspective even though, she has not known the subject of the conversation long. However, the person of the different gender, who has known the subject for a great period of time, has no clue what's going on!

Mean
In my perspective, it means that the different genders have no knowledge about the other and are confused by the views and thoughts of their opposite sex. But instead of truly admitting that we hold no intelligence of it, we tend to turn the matter around and blame the other gender for our confusion and get frustrated that they couldn't understand what we had found so simple.

Matter
This passage matters because our world is populated by the two sexes alone and without the other, we can not survive in this world because we'd die out. At yet at our initial meetings, we get confused by each others' way of carrying ourselves. This passage has shown an incident of which the genders are clashing but perhaps, from a more observational point of view, we can really see and understand why it is that this happens.

Mean:
Respect women because without women, there would be no us, because men can't give birth. But, that doesn't mean that we can disrespect men. Everyone should respect each other because we should treat others the way we would like to be treated in return.

Matter:
This matters because people should respect each other whether they are men, or women, elders, the younger ones, peers, even people who you don't know, etc. Respect is one of the human characters that everyone need to have but sadly, there are people who disrespect others who are out of their 'group' or for whatever 'reasons' they have.

Mean: This is an important part because she is willing to kill herself for her never-ending love for Romeo. I think her love for Romeo is so strong that she prefers to die then live without him. People in society today tends to be more selfish, when it comes to a life and death situation, and having to sacrifice yourself for another, even if they are close to you, some tends to turn away and pretend they didn't see anything. Katniss in the novel, should be a character to look up to. (:

Nic Sheff, in TWEAK, wrote that " I lie on the tile floor and, 'cause no one's looking, cry a little. The feeling reeks through me, but not a lot of tears come out. I'm shivering and I smell so bad. I take a shower, but the sour smell won't leave me. My skins is gray, scaly, broken out. My body is eating itself." (pg 92)

Say: Nic Sheff is describing himself after he had just injected himself with heroin and cocaine. The drugs had made him skinny and fragile like a piece of glass, and he can no longer make out his body.

Mean: My interpretation of this passage is that Nic has gotten to the point where he realizes he can no longer go on with the drugs. Although he refuses to quit, he is starting to realize how much toll the drugs is taking on his body. He seems to still be shielding himself away from the pain he is trying to escape, but at the same time he knows his physical body could not take the abuse any longer.

Matter: This passage matters because the feeling that Nic Sheff is describing not only applies to himself, but to all the drug addicts in the world. They feel hopeless and helpless, and even though they know they are dying, they seem to feel like they are cut off from the world, and no one can help them. This passage shows that we really need to reach out to help those who have lost their way in life, and to bring them back to the right track.

I believe that drugs that Nic are taking are negatively impacting and that he should most likely stop taking drugs. Even though you have temporarily achieved happiness, they should still return reality and you may feel terrible. Just don't take drugs and use your money wisely and invest in something else!

Nicholas Sparks, "The Last Song"
“She thought of Will and what he had done to protect Scott, for a crime that it turned out he hadn't even committed. Was is really so terrible, she wondered, that loyalty to his friend had skewed his judgement?"

Say: Sparks describes how we can do unreasonable things to protect the people close to us.

Mean: This situation is a great example of how we, as humans, take care and show love for each other. To each of us, we have people who mean a lot to us, so much that our actions are affected by them.

Matter: This quote was important to the story because if Will told the truth about Scott's crime, then the consequences have been severe for Scott. In our own lives, we must support those dear to us.

John Green in THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, wrote, "...it occurred to me that the voracious ambition of humans is never sated by dreams coming true, because there is always the thought that everything might be done better and again" (2012, p. 305).

Say: This says that humans will always want to do things better than the last time, and will do so until there is nothing left to be improved or done. But they won't be satisfied because there must be some way to make it better, to do it again.

Mean: To me, this passage means that on some level, humans will never be completely satisfied with what they have because they believe that there will always be something that can be improved or done with it. It means that once a dream comes true, a new one will emerge in place of the old one and the cycle continues. You may look at the finished product of your hard work and someone else will come along and think, "Hey. I can do that too and make it better." Or you'll look at it and think, "Nope. That won't do. I'll just have to try again and make it BETTER."

Matter: This passage matters because it can provide insight on how sometimes, you should just slow down and take a look at what you've done. Look at it and appreciate all that you've done because it isn't worthless. You may want to improve it or re-do it over and over again, but you can't deny what you've already done. It's there. It'll always be there. I think that is extremely important because it could lead to a happier life. You could be more content with yourself and everything you've done.

" I am nothing special; of this I am sure. I am a common man with common thoughts, and I've led a common life. There will be no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten, but I've loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me, this has always been enough." -Nicholas Sparks in "The Notebook" (pg. 2)

Say: This quote says that he doesn't mind that his life wasn't spectacular and wasn't so memorable that monuments will be dedicated to him. Just because he has loved someone else with everything he has, makes his life as satisfying as he could have wished for.

Mean: I think that this quote has a deeper meaning. In this day and age, most people think that the only thing life is about is being rich and trying to become successful and famous, creating a name that is immortal in this world. We forget that loving someone can be just as important. Noah doesn't care that he isn't wealthy and famous. All he cares about is that he's happy in his own way and he doesn't need anything else.

Matter: It matters to me because it reminds me that the goal in life doesn't have to be that you have to create a name for yourself. It tells me that not everyone is selfish and greedy. Some people still care about love.

"You know what I find most shocking about the Vel'd'Hiv?" Guillaume said. "Its code name."
I knew the answer to that, thanks to my extensive reading.
"Operation Spring Breeze, " I murmured.

Say:An American journalist, Julia, reveals the code name of an operation that rounded up many Jews in France and sent them off to a concentration camp

Mean:The procedure to round up many Jews and send them off to concetration camp was given an ironic name. By giving the plan such a shocking misnomer, the Germans were either trying to convince the Jewish French population that nothing was going to happen to them or were doing it for their own humorous benefit

Matter:The naming of the operation further shows how evil and sadistic the Nazi ruling party truly was in the 1940's. Not only were the occupants of the roundup treated in a cruel and inhumane manner, but the fact that the German's gave it a cheerful name only added insult to injury. It is not to say that all Germans are bad but in the times of WW2, the Nazi's were certainly cruel to their Jewish prisoners

Marilyn Reynolds, in "If You Loved Me," wrote: "You don't know me unless you know my mother was a big time druggie." (p. 17)

Say: Marilyn Reynolds is saying that the fact the her mom was a drug addict was as big part of her life. It obviously has affected her because it has made her into the person she is today.

Mean: This means that she had a tough life growing up. She didn't have her parents with her when she was growing up, only her grandmother took care of her. But even though her parents didn't raise her, they still made a big impact on her life. And if you don't know that she had trouble with her parents, you may get the wrong first impression about her.

Matter: This quote matters a lot because you can't judge people just based on first impression. You really need to step into their shoes to get to know them. She says that you don't know her unless you know her mom's a "druggie." People should take this quote into consideration because a lot of people may be going through a lot at home or school and just not tell you about it. In the book "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers, Steve the main character quotes, " They take away your shoelaces and your belt so you can't kill yourself no matter how bad it is. I guess making you live is part of the punishment."

Say: In jail it is so horrible people would try to commit suicide in there, but the ones punishing them would take everything away from them so they won't die fast, living is probably a punishment in jail.

Mean: Steve is in jail , he has experienced and seen life in jail. It is really horrible , it can break someone down to tears. It doesn't just get to you physically but mentally. It gets really bad sometimes that you want to die. In the book every time Steve wrote, he would say he was scared and wanted to get out of jail.

Matter:The quote is important because in the world there is always something that can break you down , till your tired of life that you would result in thinking of death but there might be someone always stopping you from dieing. That is why there are people in this world who cut themselves to relieve pain , yet they still live on. Mean: Because back then when the novel take place, African Americans tend to lack in education, their grammar usage tend to be broken, and as a mother, you would just want them to sound a bit better compare to the rest.

Matter: It showed that racism was still happening in the 1700s, where the book taken place, Africa American were able to all be well educated like the Whites, and end up having to have their parents correcting them. But sometimes because the parents are not educated either, they end up using grammar inappropriately .

Walter Dean Myers, in MONSTER, wrote, "That's true, but in reality it depends on how the jury sees the case. If they see it as a contest between the defense and the prosecution as to who's lying, they'll vote for the prosecution" (p. 79).

Say:

This says that juries are not free from bias. When they get to court and start listening to the trial, they will want to side with the prosecution.

Mean:

My interpretation of this passage is that juries already believe that the defendant is lying. It is much easier to think that the person defending themselves is defending themselves because they are guily, rather than to think that the justice system is accusing an innocent person of committing a crime.

Matter:

This passage matters because it throws doubt on how effective juries are. We use juries because we believe they will give fair and impartial judgement based only on the facts of the case, but that is not always true. Sometimes there are hung juries and a person who is clearly guilty gets away cleanly. However, this may be the best system available to us, so we will have to continue to use it.

Kathryn Stockett in THE HELP; "18 people were killed in Jackson that night. 10 white and 8 black. I don't think God has color in mind when he sets a tornado loose. "

Say:
This quote says that many people were killed by a tornado. 18 living, human beings were put to rest.

Mean:
The fact that it says that "10 white and 8 black" represents the unimportance of race in nature itself. It doesn't matter what race you are, because in the inside we are all human beings. "God" doesn't take in account what color the skin of the person is before letting him/her go.

Mistreatment due to different race is ultimately terrible. Even God knows that race doesnt matter, we should know that. Racism in our world in inevitable, but the more educated people are, the more we can fight our way to become a less racist world.

And so I write this for you, My Sarah. With the hope that one day, when you're old enough, this story that lives with me, will live with you as well. When a story is told, it is not forgotten. It becomes something else, a memory of who we were; the hope of what we can become.
- Sarah's Key (2010)

Say- This quote shows that no matter how hard a person tried to forget a traumatic experience, it will still stay in their memory and will get passed on to their kids when they are older.
Mean- Trying to forget the past is nerve racking and almost impossible to not think about it from time to time. Sometimes, it’s best to live your life and learn from past mistakes. Telling your kids what you experienced when you were younger would teach them to avoid that same mistake in the future.
Matter- Lingering over the past will not help a person learn. Going back and forth will only lead a person into a deeper depression. Getting over the past allows a person to learn and pass their intelligence to their peers who might be stuck in the same road as them later on.

We All Fall Down by Nic Sheff, "There is not one person in this whole palce who can deny what we have. SAY: In this quote, Nic is reassuring his new girlfriend, Sue Ellen, that in order to keep themselves sane spiritually as well as physically, they just need to trust themselves as much as they trust each other; to love each other as much as they love themselves. Apparently in this scene, Sue Ellen is afraid that she and Nic might fall into relapse.

MEAN: After Nic spent a long period at detox, this scene shows how much improvement he had to become a better person.

In Gary Paulsen's novel,"Hatchet", he wrote "You are your most valuable asset. Don’t forget that. You are the best thing you have.".

Say: This quote from the novel states that the most important thing you have to rely on is yourself.

Mean: This means that no matter what happens to you; be it wrong, right, or leaving you in a tight situation, there is always yourself to be able to rely on.

Matter: This means that because everyone is trying to figure things out on their own feeling helpless, that you can always have at least some form of comfort to support yourself off of.

- Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968)

mean: It means that it is the true test of friendship and character for friends to stick up for you and stand by you when the going gets tough, even when it may not be publicly or politically advantageous.

matter: True friends will be at your side during the bad times and will stand up to injustice, whether it is popular or not, if it is the right thing to do.

Say:“At night I no longer dreamed, nor did I let my imagination work during the day. The once vibrant escapes of watching myself fly through the clouds in bright blue costumes, were now a thing of the past. When I fell asleep, my soul became consumed in a black void. I no longer awoke in the mornings refreshed; I was tired and told myself that I had one day less to live in this world. I shuffled through my chores, dreading every moment of every day. With no dreams, I found that words like hope and faith were only letters, randomly put together into something meaningless - words only for fairy tales. ”

Mean: Dave is giving off emotion of despair. Dave is trying to say that every moment he lives on earth is a drag he is emotionally drained from the treatment he is getting at home.

Matter: This passgae matters because it is letting us now Daves true thoughts of his life. It is also letting us now how daves state of mind is.

mean: We all have a purpose, it's just that most of us don't take the time to surface what it is. Knowing it is a wonderful way to be able to check whether the decisions and choices we make are likely to be fulfilling.

matter: this helps me understand everything decisions you made can made a difference. And everything life give you has its own purpose. you just got to make the right choice and be grateful with everything around you.

Katniss Everdeen, in The Hunger Games, " I volunteer!" I gasp. " I volunteer as tribute! " There's some confusion on the stage. District 12 hasn't had a volunteer in decades and the protocol had become rusty.
Say: Katniss doesn't want her sister to go because she isn't experience enough to go into the Hunger Games. They are surprised that someone actually volunteer in District 12.
Mean: Katniss is prepared of what is going to happen to her in the Games.
Matter: If Katniss didn't volunteer they you wouldn't know what will happen to her sister Prim.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
"Always close enough to run back to the safety of District 12 if trouble arises. “District Twelve. Where you can starve to death in safety,” I mutter. (page 6)"

Say: District 12 is a place where people starve and it is the safest place for people.

Mean: District 12 is poor and can't afford food. District 12 has protection because around the area is the forest and lots of wild animals belong there so when trouble comes they can run back home. Its safe without food.

Matter: It shows that people who live in District 12 still has a little hope of life because safety is shown to the people, but they don't have enough food.

Plenty of black men leave their families behind like trash in a dump, but it’s not something the colored woman do. We’ve got the kids to think about – Minny Jackson (Pg 311)

say: Back in the days black men tends to leave their families behind while women dont since they have kids left with them.

mean: Back then, for a better career black men tends to leave the women behind. Most reasonable reason would be due to the condition back then that they had.

matter: Comparing to the society today, there are still lots of men out there, not just black, but other race as well. Most of the divorce, the women ends up with the child responsibility most of the time because men dont have the time or effort for them.

quote: "Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem"

Say: it is saying that suicide is a permanent solution to a problem that can be solved.

Mean: Suicide is never the answer because no situation is worth taking your life away.

Matter: This matters because their are a lot of people out there that take their life away because they were in a really bad problem but didn't know it could be solve. This quote also matters to me because every time I thought about suicide, I always end up realizing that there's more to life than a situation that would eventually go away.

In the book, CATCHING FIRE, Cinna says, "I always channel my emotions into my work. That way I don't hurt anyone but myself."
Say: This says that Cinna would rather keep his emotions to himself and only express it at work.
Mean: This shows me the type of character Cinna portrays in this book. He is the type that would use his emotions and puts it to good use at work. In other words, if he is feeling angry, he can take that energy that he has and be effective and productive.
Matter: This matters because it taught me a lesson in that if we ever have stress or any bad emotions, we should take it out on our schoolwork by using the negative energy that we have and use it as positive energy to be successful and productive. For example, if I'm playing a basketball game and I am feeling stressed, I should use that anger to play well on the court and not taking it out on anybody else, but myself.

Mean: Stevie Rae is a vampire but Rephaim is a raven mocker. His father is Kalona. Stevie Rae saved his life but she doesn't regret it one bit even if they were not allies.

Matter: Stevie Rae doesn't care if Rephaim's dad is Kalona. She believes that every person should live, and that's the reason she saved Rephaim. After Rephaim got better, Stevie Rae was relieved and wasn't unhappy that she saved him from dying.

SAY: Ender will not be the loser of his group. He will not leave his family to fail.
MEAN: This says that Ender is strong and does not give up easily. He does not want to disappoint his family.
MATTER: This matters because he does not give up easy. He goes through Battle School without giving up. He has a reason to be successful and if our society was like that, there would be more happy and successful and people out there.

"Don't let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game."

Say: Don't be afraid to try something new, or don't be afraid to go for something you want in life.

Mean: Trying to go for something in life might be scary to do but, you shouldn't be scared to try going for it.

Matter: Life is full of opportunities, and we can't be afraid to try something new and exciting in life. We have to try things without being scared to do it.

say: set low expectations or have no expectations at all so you will never be let down.

mean: this means that if you don't set expectations you will have nothing to look forward to so you will never be let down.

matter: it matters because in this quote the speaker has little hope for anything. This is bad because she probably has been let down before and doesn't want it ti happen again.

Mean: It means that they want to have a war. Their first war to see which is stronger. They want it to be just them against others.

SAY: What this says is how Lauren lied to her gma about staying the night at her friends house when really she spent the night at tylers. She felt bad and apologized for lying to her grandma.

MEAN: What this quote means is that no child should lie to a elder or guardian. It is bad to have a reputation to be known as a liar or else you wont be trusted with them.

MATTER: Why this matters is because you always want to be trusted. Being trusted is a good feeling because then people will feel like they are able to vent and not have to worry about their business getting out.

Mean- What this quote in the story is stating is telling lauren that she is ready only because he wants to have sex already with her.
Matter- I think it matters because in the book it is telling you why she isnt ready she wants to wait but there once again it goes back to the pressure of her boyfriend wanting her for sex yeah he loves her but when you love someone you shouldnt have to pressure them into anything especially sex

Mean: When Nic says this to Sue Ellen, he means to reassure her that as of "now" he is a changed person, that he's going to get his life back on track. He wants to let her know that he'll be there for her, permanently.
Matter: This statement matters because of Nic's background as a addict, going in and out of rehab after promise after promise. Nic has a severe history of saying that he would change, mean to, and then fail to do so.

Mean: It means that his mom changed completely and she is not the mother she was before. He would get in trouble for no reason and his mom would always find reasons to abuse him.
Matter: It matters because a lot of kids are getting abused and a lot of people do not even know about most of it, and the children can not do anything about it or it will make it worse like this case.
