Taking place in the late 1950s, Aibileen is a black maid that takes care of white family's children in the book "The Help" by Kathryne Stockett. I find this quite interesting because she often takes pride in the fact that the white children like her better than her parents

Your reflection revealed to me the complexity of human nature, how a simple game can lead to bizarre occurrences. Such occurrences are exemplified with the competition for survival, leaving the most fit to win it all. Survival of the fittest is what the Hunger Games exemplifies; additionally it includes the similarity with the plot of the novel, Lord of the Flies.

These past few weeks my group and I have been reading the book Tweak by Nic Sheff. The thing that caught my attention the most was the thought of addiction, the scariest thing of our body how it can get use to the most dangerous habits and make your mind feel “good”. How desperate could a human really be for the feeling of being high knowing your life is soon to crush down on you, to the point of stealing from your own loved ones for a needle of toxic injected in the body for a moment of relief? Knowing you aren’t strong enough to stop and slowly watching your life end day by day.

The book I’m reading is The Help, written by Kathryn Stockett. What stood out to me in this week’s reading is how a character named Skeeter was so attached to their helper, Constantine. Skeeter pretty much grew up under the care of Constantine but when she came home from college one day and did not find Constantine there, she was devastated. This is the part where I can relate to her because I, too, had a “help;” a nanny. My nanny and I got along great and when she left out of the blue, I was confused. I hoped she didn’t leave because she was like family to me. It surprised me how I could have such a similar experience with a character on a book.

In the book “Monster” written by Walter Dean Myers, a young boy named Steve Harmon is being accused of felony murder. Although Steve claims that he is innocent, everybody still believes that he is a criminal, a MONSTER. While Steve Harmon’s involvement in the robbery that led to murder is partly responsible for the title he is given, the main reason people are calling him a monster is because he is black. This stood out to me the most because I wonder how the trial would be treated if Steve Harmon were white. I think it's easy to say "just report it!" if we aren't the victim. I believe that if someone is caused that big of a trauma, it's only natural for them to be afraid and believe they'll have what happened to them happen again. What I think we should do to about this though, is that we should be more aware of what's happening around us, like if someone is acting strange because they could have been harmed; and maybe go up to someone who looks sad and ask them how they're feeling or if they just need someone to talk to.

In THE HELP, by Kathryn Stockett, it was brought up about the situation of colored people having their own bathroom/restroom. In the book, Miss Leefolt's friend Miss Hilly, made a suggestion of building one restroom/bathroom, outside of the house for the help, as in the colored people. Hilly brought up the point of them carrying different types of diseases around, and her way of thinking, is cause of segregation. Segregation is the separation of races. IF YOU LOVED ME by Marilyn Reynolds talks about the problems teenagers have to face today-from drugs to peer pressure. The issue that stood out this week in my reading was Lauren’s, the main character, anger for her mother. Lauren’s mother is a drug addict and her mom soon after died of an explosion trying to make drugs. Although Lauren’s grandmother has already forgiven her daughter, Lauren still cannot grasp the idea why her mom would abandon her over some drugs. Lauren hates her mom for abandoning her. Since Lauren’s hate is so strong, she has anger problems that appear in her everyday life. An instance was when her teacher wanted to take her book away, she got angry to the point where she almost yelled at him. Although taking away a book is not a big deal, Lauren is unable to control her anger. To me, I think Lauren should learn to forgive her mother and not dwell on the past. If Lauren keeps thinking she is an abandoned child, she will never get over her insecurities and anger. Lauren should realize that it was not entirely her mom’s fault for abandoning her. Lauren’s mom was so consumed by drugs to even think for her own well being. Lauren should focus on the positive things in life and especially be thankful that her grandmother is taking care of her because some kids like her become orphans.

Upon further reading of THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER by Stephen Chbosky, I am intrigued to discover the depth of Charlie's emotions and his past. Although the beginning of the book was rather dull with the typical portrayal of a troubled teenager who has too much angst bottled up within himself, further reading reveals that Charlie's childhood and family relationships attributed to his awkward behavior. The theme of interconnectedness really stood out to me in this week's reading. A teenager's relationship between his/her parents and friends both contribute to his character and mentality. Family and friends provide the moral support required to move on from the past and attempt to let go of suffering from the past. I find this outstanding because I am also trying to relinquish emotions from past events and move on. As a result, this has really allowed me to keep moving forward.

It is true that relationships affect the mentality of people greatly. It is not only friends and family, but the strangers and acquaintances we pass by everyday that have an affect on our behavior. People often forget what influence they can have on others, and it is sad to see many go on so carelessly with their scathing words and negligent actions. Charlie was affected by the attitude of his classmates, even those who did not know him at all. I think it's important that people carefully examine not only their relationships with their close friends and family, but their relationships with those who are only seen on occasion. The influence we have on others is actually more than we perceive.

It is sad to hear that Charlie experienced suffering in the past. It is true that an experience of an event can impact the way a person may act, in this case for Charlie, his awkwardness. I also believe that the environment of a teenager is really influential. Charlie feeling loved and supported by the people around him helps to overcome the pain that he has felt in the past. I like how his parents and friends are very supportive of him because as a troubled teen, moral support is needed to be happy and get on with his life.

I agree that a person’s relationships really do affect how they communicate with others. Also parents do play a huge role in how their children behave in society. Everyone can be so easily affected by others around us. People have to be more aware of their words and actions.

Reading about the Hunger Games had just really want me to read it even more. The way how the story was just introduced was just amazing. I liked how the author, in an instant, gave us a description on the main protagonist's lifestyle but didn't introduce her name just yet. As the setting further develops, we are presented this broken up country in the future that revolves around one central powerhouse, maintaining power and control over the rest of the regions though entertaining themselves by causing the weaker districts to suffer.

I'm reading THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER by Stephen Chbosky. What stood out to me the most was when Charlie’s grandfather told him about the time he hit his mom and his aunt for getting bad grades, when he knew they could do better. He told them that he hit them because he didn’t want them to turn out like him and that he would make sure that he was the last one in his family to work in a mill. It stood out to me because kids always complain and yell at parents for being unfair, but in reality, they only discipline us so that we would achieve something they never could and become successful. Parents only want what’s best for their kids and we might not realize that until we're older.

I feel that most kids do complain about their parents being harsh or unfair but I think that all of them know that their parents want the best for them. However, that doesn't diminish the "unfairness" of the situation, plus who doesn't like to complain from time to time?

That particular section of the story also stood out to me. Physically knocking some sense into people may not be the best choice, but this example made me feel grateful for the way my parents settle situations--calm and collectively. I, too, agree that kids complain way too often about their parents being unfair. It may be true for some cases, but the underlying factor is, they just want the best for us.

The book I am reading is If You Loved Me by Marilyn Reynolds. In the first eight chapters of Marilyn Reynold's IF YOU LOVED ME, what stood out to me the most was how easy it was for the story line to consume me. The characters felt so dramatized yet, realistic at the same time. The issues in the book felt so hard to relate to, yet I could easily relate with how the main character felt and could empathize with her and every other character in the book. A specific example of this is that the protagonist, Lauren, is a girl who was abandoned by her crack-addict parents. She has extreme anger issues that can only be consoled by her best friend and boyfriend. She has given herself to her boyfriend - but not completely. On top of that, she found an abandoned baby which only made her remember her own past. She is being followed around by an unknown red Honda. Her boyfriend is pressuring her for sex. Relating to all of Lauren's problems would be ludicrous for someone like me; a person who lives in a bubble. But, it is simple to pick out one of her problems and related to it completely. There are those few times when I experience rage the way Lauren does. I look back on it and wonder why that happened. There are relationship stories, and just the fact that we are both teenage girls makes it easy to relate to her.

One thing that really stood out to me this week when I was reading The Hunger Games was the training. Katniss and Peeta are a team so they have to learn to work together. During the training each person gets ranked by the judges and while Katniss was going up for her turn not one of the judges acknowledged her. This week's reading was very eventful about Lauren's character as well as the past in the book. Her anger towards her mother showed in many ways throughout these four chapters. The anger inside of her builds up and we see that she gets angry about little things like the owner of the bookstore not buying an ad for their newspaper. Or how she gets mad at her teacher by taking away her book and forcing her to read the assigned reading. This makes me wonder to myself if I have ever been like that to the people around me. It also made me wonder if I have ever shrugged off a comment about my anger like Lauren did to her grandmother.

Lauren's character seems be very relatable. Oftentimes, we shrug off constructive criticism as mean comments or insults. Sometimes, people just tell us these things because they want to help us improve ourselves, as Lauren's teacher does when she takes away her book. In society, there's this insane, showy spotlight that shines on romantic love that people sort of forget that there are other forms of love too. I think family love is something extremely special, especially when it buds between people who are not blood related and not obiligated by the laws of nature to care for one another. The familial love, in my opinion, is probably the purest form of love I can think of because of its inherent capacity for generous compassion.
