In the Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, the issue of making quick critical decisions presented itself in the reading. Katniss must think in a very quick and smart manner if she wants to live in the beginning of the Hunger Games. In real life, we are always bombarded with decisions that we need to make in such a quick manner that at times it can quite overwhelming. Making quick decisions, due to a small time frame, will continue to present itself throughout our lives whether we like it or not. One must accustom himself to making these decisions if they want thrive in society.

I do agree with what your saying, that every decision in life that you make will have a big affect on the rest of your life. Some decisions have to be made quicker than most and most of the times they are the most difficult. So the best way to make those decisions is to ask yourself what is best for you and how it will affect you.

I agree with this post because at some point in your life you must face a difficult decision that requires only a limited time to think it over. And although your decision is due in short time it may still have a huge impact. So you have to make the most out of it and think about what the benefits are and what the important aspects are.

With how fast pace society is, having to make quick decisions on the fly is not uncommon. We simply do not have the time to stop and think and analyze the pros and cons of the situation, sometimes only relying on intuition and our gut feeling. Afterwards, we can only hope that our decision produces satisfactory results. I feel this is really shame because some of our decisions might come out better if we just took a little time to think before acting. It is unfortunate that our society does permit that.

I agree that it's really difficult to think under pressure, especially if your life depends on it. One small mistake can lead to a downfall, and that's what makes it hard to decide on what to do. When you are put on the spot, it's different than planning out what you're going to do, and even if you do plan on your actions, being under pressure and being nervous can make you forget what to do.

Fitting in is one of the biggest issue in High School. Everyone wants to fit in and join the popular students. At lunch when you walk out you'll see that there are tables for different groups. A lot of kids probably want to fit in a specific group, but I dont think it's that important.

i can agree with your comparison between the book and high school life. As a freshman, students can become very overwhelmed with who to group up with and consider them friends. At times, making friends can be very difficult and students would rather change who they are to fit into a certain group. I think it is safe to say that student who enter high school are very insecure and do whatever it takes to feel comfortable in their surroundings.

I do agree that high schoolers feel pressured to fit in in order be with a specific clique. It is something that many of us in high school will at some point have to deal with. To some it is even a way of life- to put on a mask everyday in order to be included in cliques and feel wanted. It's a shame that anyone has to go through such troubles, but society dictates otherwise.

This is very true. Especially as teenagers, we are often faced with the fear of being outcasts. We yearn to be accepted by our peers and we strive to seek approval from everybody. This week, in Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, Charlie spends most of the time avoiding his usual group of friends. This reflects the most contemporary issue in the sense that Charlies didn't do what everyone would've considered to be the social norm. During a game of truth or dare, Charlie believed that he had to do what he believed was the truth which in turn hurt a lot of other people. The consequences of that was that nearly everyone in his circle of friends told him to lay low. Charlie was confused and just ended up avoiding everyone he considers a friend and was basically thrown into depression for a while.

I think that Charlie believed that he owed it to his friends to reveal the truth. As much as he liked Mary Elizabeth, he didn't feel the same sparks as he did with Sam. It was noble and respectful of him to show his friends how he truly felt. Although his stunt at the truth or dare game did cause a rift between him and his friends, this was a test. This was a good test on his friendships/relationships with the people that he truly cared about. It's a shame when someone like Charlie is ostracized by his own friends. It's a good thing that he respected their space and time away so things could simmer down.

The most contemporary issue in my reading of The Help by Kathryn Stockett would be when Skeeter was daring enough to cross a line by asking Aibileen, a help, about what it’s like in her perspective to work for white people. She wanted to hear other people’s voices speak up and tell their story. This impacts our society’s daily lives because as we’re beginning to discuss about our bullying project, a bystander could have encouraged someone who’s being bullied to speak up and put an end to the bullying, or the bystander themselves could have said something to at least make the victim not feel alone. However, speaking up is a contemporary issue itself because now that we have such a liberated country (conquering slavery, segregation, etc.), we are able to speak freely because we have that freedom, a freedom that is even stated in the Constitution.

In this day and age, everyone lies no matter big or small. To some, choosing to lie may be the right choice in order to not hurt anyone's feelings. I believe that there are certain things that you can't be completely honest with because somethings are better left unsaid. Divergent, by Veronica Roth, possess the contemporary issue of picking a group of people and fitting in with their lifestyle and social life or else you get kicked out and have no home. The people in the story pick for life. This applies to society because I feel like we are always picking a certain group of friends that we like and we tend to change ourselves to be just like them. We conform to their ways and habits even if it is not who we are. We find a way to make sure we're exactly like them so that they will like us and accept us so we won't become "homeless". He tries hard to make friends and keep them as happy as he can, but sometimes it requires some white lies and closeted truths. In the story "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers, an issue that they emphasize in the court is racism. Racism is a key problem in America's society today. In fact back in the late 1900's racism in court houses were considered unfair. For example a white man commiting a crime wouldnt be as severe as a black man doing the same crime. In TELLING by Marilyn Reynolds, a twelve year old child is sexually harassed by her seemingly friendly neighbor. A contemporary issue in this week's reading is the struggling bond between parent and child. The protagonist of the story, Cassie, tries to tell her mother what happened to her, but in her attempt to stay level headed, Cassie's mother makes it appear that she does not believe her daughter's story. Their relationship was initially weak, but after the horrific incident Cassie went through, it became stronger - but only after her mother knew the truth. This is an issue extremely relevant to everyone because everyone experiences moments when they fear telling an authoritative figure the truth about something. The relationship between a parent and child, however, should be comfortable enough so that they can tell each other anything. Cassie feared what her parents' reactions would be, so she continued baby-sitting at the Sloanes', even though she felt uncomfortable and scared.

During this week's read of ,"The Perks of Being a Wallflower", by Stephen Chbosky, the most contemporary issue that stood out to me would be fitting in and striving to be considered as a member of the "in" crowd. Charlie is still struggling to be a normal person and doesn't know how to act in front of others. At a party, he was asked to kiss the prettiest girl in the room, and instead of going to his girlfriend, Mary Elizabeth, he decided to be blunt and honest at that moment and kissed Sam, the girl that he actually did like. Also, the fact that Mary Elizabeth and Sam had some tension between each other once before deepened the issue. This situation revealed a lot about Charlie as a person; that he is willing to break barriers and really express how he feels instead of trying to please others just so he could fit in.

Oftentimes, however, attempts to conform cause pain to individuals as they must display themselves in a different perspective. This leads to the loss of individuality and self-expression.

In Kathryn Stockett’s THE HELP, a big issue is placed upon racism and prejudice. Colored people are frowned upon society and are oppressed. They were meant for ‘low-paying” jobs and would not have believed to be able to amount to much. However, that has truly changed today, especially with even our president, Barack Obama, who is colored himself. Times are changing. The roles of women have changed as well. Women are becoming doctors, lawyers, etc. They are no longer the housewives like back then. Society is much different than it was back then. This change is something new and good we all must learn to accept and embrace.

In "The Hunger Games:, the most contemporary issue that I read about this week was the killing of a young gil for the sake of entertainment. Rue was killed by a boy tribute from District 1. The worst part was that she was such a sweet, innocent girl. She did nothing wrong. She just had the misfortune of being picked for the games. I know our society doesn't have this sort of thing around but there are people who hurt others just for fun.

This week, in "If You Loved Me" by Marilyn Reynolds, the most contemporary issue presented was how to deal with discrimination. In this story, Lauren gets in several arguments about how people judge people just by their ethnicity. For example, asians eat rice with everything and I still believe these things still happen today. Like I always say, "don't judge a book by its cover".

In The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, the most contemporary issue presented was how they had to recognize they were thrown into a yearly game just to show that the Capital owns all the Districts from one to twelve. Katniss, the main character, volunteered in order to save her sister, Prim, from entering and dying in the Hunger Games. This issue impacts our society because everyone has their own struggles in life and decide to take certain sacrifices if they are needed. People cannot bear to see the lost of a family or friend.

The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, the most contemporary issue on this week’s reading was Racism. The reason is that in the story, color people were not treated with respect and pride. The reason it affects our daily life is that there are still people are racist and just judge people by their covers.

In the story "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers, the main contemporary issue is racism. Racism is still a problem today but has improved from before. Steve was treated differently because of his skin color and so this gave him a disadvantage during court. Racism can play a huge factor into someone life, it affects their lifestyle from friends, impressions, your environment, and it can change your opportunities in life.

In "Too Soon For Jeff" by Marilyn Reynolds, while Jeff and Christy were at a graduation party in Disneyland, Christy's water broke and she had to be taken to the hospital so she can get the baby born. She had to be kept in intensive care while Jeff, his parents, and Christy's parents wait until the surgery is finished.

In The Perks Of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, Charlie stops a fight between Patrick and Brad. This conflict stems from Patrick and Brad's gay relationship, which Brad is forced to abandon when his father caught them making love in the basement. As a result Brad shuns Patrick and calls him a faggot. This week's reading highlights the intolerance LGBT teens are facing in schools because of who they are and what they cannot change. We all should be more accepting and tolerant of others because we all could be in the same situations one day.

This post appeals to me because it shows how a father can affect a sons life. In this particular story I think whoever this Brad character is should be more independent and follow what he think is right instead of just shunning out who he loves because his father had commanded him to do so.

In Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card. Ender learns about being on his own and living by himself. This comes from his isolation at his battle school. Because Ender was seen as an outsider who frequently caused everyone else to be ashamed. This is relevant to today because, there are frequently people who are alone because of their talents which make other people angry at them. I think that the goals of society should be to make more connections with people and make sure that everyone talks to each other.

In this week's reading, the most contemporary issue I read about in, the A-list, is about jealousy. Anna is the new girl who meets a boy named Ben on a plane and gets invited to a celebrities wedding the day of. Then she gets the opportunity to meet the A-list girls (at the event) who are head-over-heals with him. The book tells you every persons perspective and how they try to manipulate and torture her so Ben will dump her so that gives them a higher chance to be with him. But since they explain it from their side, they don't seem as devious as it's put out to be. I guess this relates to the modern world because everyone has a reason for doing something. As much as it may seem irrational and delusional, everyone has intentions and many people misinterpret situations because they judge only based on one side's aspect.

The most contemporary issue presented in this week's reading must be child abuse. In this week's reading, it talks about David's father try to protect him for his mother's beating and hurting, but because he was afraid of David mother, he did't help David at all. Child abuse has been a really serious issue in this book. Why is this still happening today, it's just because other people that witness the abuse, but not brave enough to protect the youth. To stop child abuse, we must step out and help the children. Comments are closed.
