Include the title of the book you're reading, the author and the page number where the selected quote is located. 1. Briefly summarize the quote in your own words 2. Explore the quote's meaning (your interpretation) 3. State why you think the quote matters to the whole of the story (the implications). After you have posted, respond to one other person's entry. The person you respond to does NOT have to be in your same class period or your same grade. Your initial post is due each Wednesday. Your response is due by Friday. Do NOT WRITE, "I AGREE" TO SOMEONE ELSE. You may write, "Your post made me consider ____," "Your post reminded me of this other _____ I read and how _____," etc. You must write your first name and last initial and class period each time you post. Example: Shelia S, period 1. You must also use academic language. Absolutely NO texting abbreviations. SEE MODEL POST BELOW! Gregory Boyle, in TATTOOS ON THE HEART, wrote, "You stand with the belligerent, the surly, and the badly behaved until bad behavior is recognized for the language it is: the vocabulary of the deeply wounded and of those whose burdens are more than they can bear" (179). (This is cited in MLA format.) Say: This says that bad behavior is a way of communicating one's pain and that standing with the badly behaved is necessary until the pain is revealed and understood. Mean: My interpretation of this passage is that it means that when people act out and misbehave that they are doing so because they are in tremendous pain. Either they've been neglected and their own needs are not being met, or they have been abused or hurt in some way, or perhaps they've suffered a loss that is too big for them to bear. Instead of using their words about how much pain they're in, they act out by doing things that are inappropriate and often illegal (This is a book about gangs.) Matter: This passage matters because it offers an explanation for bad behavior and challenges us to see beyond the behavior to the heart of the matter. If we can do that, then we may feel more empathy, and as a result, be able to stick it out with those who are acting badly rather than quickly dismiss, judge and abandon them.

This quote reminds me of a correlation between two variables that students today are familiar with. They have come to believe that an increased amount of time spent studying for a test will lead to a higher test grade. However, these two variables just show that they have a positive association. This does not necessarily mean that studying will mean a higher test grade. There are many students who don't study and still do very well on tests.

By having so many roles, people may get confused and not know what their true identity is. But the most important role is what you identify yourself." It reminds me of how in high school, it's said that this is where we form our identities. I guess sometimes it takes some people longer because we're different individuals and have different personalities, but it's so true that knowing your self is so important because sometimes it's all you have. Yet despite all the differences, many aspects of different culture actually are the same. While the bad luck number is 13 in United States, in Asian countries it is the number 4. In some countries, white might not be an unlucky color; however, in other countries, black is the color of death or funeral. Each culture has its own way to represent something. When this happens, we eventually come to a breakdown point. Society is always demanding perfection, and we are always trying to achieve that. We are all humans and make mistakes. I love the passage you chose. It really pertains to our high school lives. We should not let people tell us what to do, they are not the ones to control us. We only control ourselves and we are to make our own decisions in life. Whether those decisions are good or bad, we will learn when the time comes. Even if we teenagers cannot seem to make our own decisions, I believe that we should start making our own choices. The choices could be bad or good, we will learn from the mistakes we made. It is our life and we are the ones to live the decisions that we have made.

This quote made me feel so optimistic, but so unbearably sad at the same time. Although the story between Ever and Damon in SHADOWLAND is only a fantasy, the emotions and feelings they have are so real and easy to relate to. The idea that destiny is something that can be controlled is a blessing and a curse. I make my own decisions, and I have to live with the outcomes. Ever, the protagonist, made some bad decisions which led to the problems she had with her boyfriend. Although she was regretful, there was a blessing in her mistakes; the blessing was that she had made them, and they were the reason she was caught in a mess. The reason I believe this is a blessing is because if it was her own actions that ruined everything, her own actions would be able to fix her situations. This holds very true in real life situations, where problems can be created or solved because of decisions we make. It just makes me wonder what life would be if everything was etched in stone, as Benny said in his first paragraph. If fate was carved in stone, perhaps there would be no point in worrying and being sad. Everyone would do what they are supposed to do, and there is no point in scrutinizing over every decision because there is already a concrete image at the end of everyone's path.

This quote made me feel that we should live life to the fullest. Unlike Holden, everyone should have something to hold onto when it is lost. It shows how everyone has their own way to interpret their lives although some may be full of interesting stories and some may not. However, everyone has their own way to live life but I think everyone should live life to the fullest.

I think this quote is good because it shows that even at your worst or a tough time, there are still things and benefits you could live by.

In "The Gatekeepers" Robert Liparulo said. “To you, death does not simply end life. It steals away the sunsets you'll never see, the children you'll never hold, the wife you'll never love. It's frightening to almost lose your future, and it's heartbreaking to witness death snuff out other people's tomorrows.”

Death can be defined as many things. Most often, death is known as either a curse, or a blessing. It provides escape from the real world but it also means leaving those possessions and companions behind. It is obvious that most of us fear death; but it is also obvious that all of us have not experienced death. We don not fear death, but the consequences that follow. Describe it however you'd like, but it will always leave an impact.

I do agree with what you are saying but I would have to add that the biggest thing we have to fear is fear itself. Simply the psychological impact of that fear is enough to paralyze us. Death is something that we can either accept or deny vehemently.

Today I read the book named "The Dark Heart". The character on this book was Aljan son-of-Korr, dark moon, the Firebringer. He's the youngest prince the unicorns have ever known, destined to conquer their enemies and lead the tribe back to their ancestral homeland. But a secret haunts Jan's father, the king of a secret so dark that, once exposed, it could bring the downfall of the Firebringer and with it the unicorns' bright future. when, with his dying breath, Korr reveals the truth to his son, Jan is left with its terrible burden and an impossible choice renounce Tek, his beloved mate, and lose forever the kingship of the unicorns, or return to the tribe and face the consequences of his father's acts, and of his own.

Randy Pausch, in The Last Lecture, wrote “Another way to be prepared is to think negatively. Yes, I'm a great optimist, but when trying to make a decision, I often think of the worst case scenario. I call it 'the eaten by wolves factor.' If I do something, what's the most terrible thing that could happen? Would I be eaten by wolves? One thing that makes it possible to be an optimist, is if you have a contingency plan for when all hell breaks loose. There are a lot of things I don't worry about, because I have a plan in place if they do.” (236).
